The perception of colour in an embedded field is affected by the surround colour. This phenomenon is known as chromatic induction. In the present study we investigated whether the colour perception by infants aged 5–7 months could be affected by the surround colour. In Experiments 1 and 2 each stimulus was composed of an array of six squares in tandem. The colour appearance of the array in the familiarization stimulus was established by chromatic induction. In Experiment 1 we used familiarization stimuli that were perceived as two‐colour array with a two‐colour surround. In Experiment 2 we used a familiarization stimulus that was perceived as a uniform‐colour array with a two‐colour surround. In the test phase, the uniform‐colour array and the two‐colour array were presented on a white uniform‐colour surround in both experiments. The results showed that in Experiment 1 the 5‐ and 7‐month‐old infants had novelty preference for the uniform‐colour test array. This suggested that the infants' colour perception could be affected by surround colour. The results of Experiment 2 showed that the 7‐month‐olds showed a novelty preference for the two‐colour test array, but the 5‐month‐olds showed no novelty preference. This suggested that 7‐month‐olds' colour perception could be affected by surround colour, but that of 5‐month‐olds could not. We discuss the contradiction of the results between Experiments 1 and 2. Recent research on consumption and subjective well-being has revealed that experiential purchases and prosocial spending promote happiness by enhancing the purchasers’ social relationships. This study (N = 1523) explored whether undergraduate students’ consumption behaviors during summer break would be associated with their post-break happiness, and whether the consumption–happiness relationship would be mediated by a positive influence on their social relationships. The results showed that both experiential purchases and prosocial spending during summer break were associated with greater post-break happiness, but only when these purchases had a positive influence on the purchasers’ social relationships. These effects remained significant after controlling for respondents’ personality traits, financial standing, and sex. Moreover, both experiential purchases and prosocial spending were more likely to have a positive influence on social relationships than luxury purchases. These results are congruent with the recent exposition that experiential purchases and prosocial spending promote happiness by enhancing the purchasers’ social relationships.  相似文献

Previous work has reported that children creatively make syntactic errors that are ungrammatical in their target language, but are grammatical in another language. One of the most well-known examples is medial wh-question errors in English-speaking children's wh-questions (e.g., What do you think who the cat chased? from Thornton, 1990). The evidence for this non-target-like structure in both production and comprehension has been taken to support the existence of innate, syntactic parameters that define all possible grammatical variation, which serve as a top-down constraint guiding children's language acquisition process. The present study reports new story-based production and comprehension experiments that challenge this interpretation. While we replicated previous observations of medial wh-question errors in children's sentence production (Experiment 1), we saw a reduction in evidence indicating that English-speaking children assign interpretations that conform to the medial wh-question pattern (Experiment 2). Crucially, we found no correlation between production and comprehension errors (Experiment 3). We suggest that these errors are the result of children's immature sentence production mechanisms rather than immature grammatical knowledge.  相似文献

The goal of this study was to ascertain at what age infants could discriminate male and female faces using only the internal features of the face. The habituation-dishabituation technique was used to estimate infants' discrimination between male and female faces. Analysis showed that 8-mo.-old infants discriminated female and male faces, whereas 6-mo.-old infants did not, but showed an asymmetry in discrimination. 6-mo.-old infants who were habituated to the female face fixated consistently longer on the novel male face in test trials, so sex discrimination was complete but not observed after habituation to male faces. Data are discussed in relation to the role of experience in face discrimination.  相似文献

Twenty-one sessions of group play therapy were conducted with children who stutter in order to improve their stuttering and to promote their development in social adaptation. Follow-up surveys were made 6 mo and 5 yr after therapy.As therapy progressed, a definite process of change was observed in each child, from periods of anxiety, appearance of aggressive behavior, frequent occurence of aggressive behavior, to a decrease in aggressive behavior. After the appearance of aggressive behavior, a fluctuation in stuttering occured as cooperative play with other children was established. This was followed by a decrease in stuttering. The appearance of aggressive behavior during therapy is thought to be of major significance for the disappearance of stuttering and for interpersonal relationships.A follow-up survey showed that both stuttering and social adjustment had improved, indicating the effectiveness of therapy.  相似文献

The present study examined effects of variations in modeled pain cues on level of vicarious arousal, using heart rate and blood-volume amplitude as psychophysiological measures. Students were assigned randomly to one of four groups in which they either (a) underwent directly the cold-pressor test, (b) observed a model exposed to the cold-pressor test and expressing pain by facial and bodily movements, (c) heard only the modeled verbal expressions of pain, or (4) observed the model express neither verbal expressions nor physical movements while undergoing the painful stimulation. The results show aversive stimulation increases heart rate whereas vicarious aversive stimulation produces reductions in heart rate. The deceleration of heart rate was not found in response to all three forms of modeling. Both direct and vicarious aversive stimulation produced decreases in the amplitude of vasomotor responses. The size of the decrement between direct stimulation and the minimal modeling condition of vicarious arousal showed significant differences, but differences between direct stimulation and the maximal modeling condition were not significant. The vasoconstriction was found in response to two forms of modeling.  相似文献

The purpose of the present study was to examine the validity of the popular hypothesis that video game use will prevent children from socially adjusting. Three surveys of elementary school children were reported. The primary results were as follows: (a) The frequency of video game use had no correlation with children's popularity among classmates. (b) The frequency of video game use had slightly negative correlations with boys' sociocognitive abilities such as empathy, cognitive complexity, and cognitive abstractness. (c) However, it was likely that the negative correlations were not due to the causal relation that video game use affected boys' sociocognitive abilities, which supported the hypothesis, but rather the causal relation that video game use was affected by their abilities; and (d) In the case of computer use, such as word processing or programming, the frequency of use had few correlations with sociocognitive abilities.  相似文献

Two experiments were conducted so that deaf adults with mental retardation could develop their communication skills in an institution. Deaf and hearing residents were taught sign vocabulary using the following four procedures: sign language lessons in a large group, posters, review lessons, and distribution of a sign language book. Experiment 1 was a pilot study to assess the effect of a sign language lesson, and Experiment 2 was a systematic study to evaluate the 4 procedures using a multiple baseline design. Sign language use in natural settings was monitored for 10 months, starting with the first sign language lesson. Results showed that a sign language lesson was an effective way for most hearing residents to acquire expressive signs. Three out of 4 deaf residents learned expressive signs gradually during experiments. In natural settings, hearing residents were seen to use signs spontaneously with deaf residents in many different social contexts. Additional comprehensive assessment was conducted to confirm whether or not residents could understand one another's expressive signs. Seven out of 10 residents showed correct responses more than 80% of the time.  相似文献
