A novel "in vitro reinforcement" paradigm was used to investigate Skinner's (1953) hypotheses (a) that operant behavior is made up of infinitesimal "response elements" or "behavioral atoms" and (b) that these very small units, and not whole responses, are the functional units of reinforcement. Our tests are based on the assumption that behavioral atoms may plausibly be represented at the neural level by individual cellular responses. As a first approach, we attempted to reinforce the bursting responses of hippocampal units in a highly reduced brain-slice preparation with local micropressure applications of behaviorally reinforcing dopaminergic drugs. The same injections were administered independently of bursting to provide a "noncontingent" control for nonspecific stimulation or facilitation of firing. It was found that the bursting responses of individual CA1 pyramidal neurons may be progressively facilitated in a dose-related manner by response-contingent (but not noncontingent) injections of dopamine itself, the dopamine D1-preferring agonist SKF 82958, the D3-preferring agonist quinpirole, and the D2-like selective agonist (+)-4-propyl-9 hydroxynapthoxazine. These findings support the conclusion that unit bursting responses can be reinforced in vitro in hippocampal slices, and they further suggest that the same dopamine receptor subtypes are involved in both cellular and behavioral operant conditioning. We developed an adaptive forced-choice method whereby reference and test presentations were alternated in order to minimize effects from variables such as subject attention level. In our demonstration example of an X-ray fluoroscopy perception study, we measured detectability of low-contrast objects in noisy image sequences and determined X-ray dose levels for equivalent detectability of identical contrasts for a new test acquisition method (fluoroscopy at 15 acq/sec) as compared with a reference (conventional fluoroscopy at 30 acq/sec). In preliminary experiments, we found a dose savings with the test method. We derived parameter uncertainties for the adaptive procedure and demonstrated their applicability with Monte Carlo simulations. Repeated experiments on a single subject demonstrated reduced standard errors due to the reduction of day-to-day variations. It is believed that the method can be applied in a variety of situations in which one needs to compare perception measurements. 相似文献

Moral decision making has recently attracted considerable attention as a core feature of all human endeavors. Previous functional magnetic resonance imaging studies about moral judgment have identified brain areas associated with cognitive or emotional engagement. Here, we applied graph theory-based network analysis of event-related potentials during moral decision making to reveal the personal/impersonal distinction in the organization of functional connectivity. Our results indicated that the personal task had more larger long-range connections involved in frontal regions and the right hemisphere, and higher network efficiency of some frontal electrodes such as F2 than the impersonal. These might be related to brain resource reorganization contributing to efficient conflict resolution. These findings provide new insights into neural mechanisms of moral dilemmas. 相似文献

Heavy nitrogen doping of TiO2 thin films has been achieved by ion-beam-assisted deposition. The heavily doped films have a distorted anatase crystal structure and show an increase in visible-light absorption compared to films with only light nitrogen doping. The enhanced absorption is shown by a first-principles density-functional calculation to result from an electronic band-gap narrowing, in contrast to the appearance of isolated N 2p states above the valence-band maximum that occur with light nitrogen doping. 相似文献
