Interfacial structure in SiC/Si3N4 composite whiskers

Abstract

High-resolution TEM techniques have been used to investigate the interfacial structure in SiC/Si₃N₄ composite whiskers grown by a vapour–liquid–solid process. On one side of the whisker a coherent interface with the relationship of (111)β-SiC∥(102) α-Si₃N₄ has been observed, on the other side the interface is (111)β-SiC∥(114)α-Si₃N₄.     

Clearing Up Obstructions: An Image Schema Approach to the Concept of ‘Datong’ 大通 in Chapter 6 of the Zhuangzi

In much of modern scholarship, the notion of datong 大通 in Zhuangzi’s famous zuowang 坐忘 (sitting in disregard) passage is often interpreted as either Dao or a mental/spiritual state of an ideal person, a person who has obtained Dao. In either case, however, the association between datong and such interpretation lacks detailed justification resulting from an insufficiently understood relation between datong and its immediately preceding statements. Different from the more common readings, I propose a cognitive approach based on an image schema related to non-obstruction. In order to demonstrate the philosophical importance of this schema, I will first briefly point out the problems of previous scholarship regarding the zuowang passage. Second, I will introduce the image schema related to non-obstruction based on a number of examples taken from the Zhuangzi. Finally, I will apply this methodology and introduce a cognitive experience-based interpretation of the zuowang passage.     

Low-temperature mechanical properties of Ce68Al10Cu20Co2 bulk metallic glass

Although it is well known that traditional metals and alloys will become brittle at low temperatures, the effect of low temperature on the mechanical properties of bulk metallic glasses (BMGs) is yet to be fully understood. In this research, the mechanical properties of Ce₆₈Al₁₀Cu₂₀Co₂ BMG are investigated at low temperatures. It is found that the yield strength of the Ce-based BMG increases significantly with the decrease of temperature. The elastic moduli of the BMG also increase monotonically with the drop of temperature, indicating the continuous stiffening of the BMG, while both Poisson's ratio and global plasticity decline at low temperatures. It is considered that the stiffer atomic bonds of the Ce-based BMG at low temperatures result in the increase of strength, and the higher energy required for nucleation of shear bands also leads to the increase in yield strength.     

语素意识对学前儿童言语技能发展的预测作用：追踪研究的证据

为探讨词素意识、同形语素意识和形旁意识等不同层面语素意识对汉语儿童口语词汇、汉字识别和阅读理解能力发展的预测作用,本研究对75名学前儿童进行了一年半的追踪,结果发现:(1)学前儿童的语素意识和言语技能随时间均有显著增长。(2)在控制了因变量的自回归效应后,同形语素意识对一年半后的口语词汇成绩仍有显著的预测作用;词素意识能显著预测一年半后的汉字识别成绩;词素意识和形旁意识是儿童一年半后阅读理解成绩变异的重要解释变量。这表明语素意识对于学前儿童语言技能的发展具有重要的预测作用。

公元8世纪,阿维森纳及其医学名著《医典》走进了医学发展的历史画卷.《医典》传承希波克拉底和盖伦学说并使之条理化、精致化,是一部编撰性质的文集,良莠并存,传承性有余创新性不足;其核心理论“体液配属理论”属于准科学性质;《医典》的巨大影响与其特殊的历史背景、具有合理的成分、被选作大学教材以及学术界的误导等因素有关.     

The Construction of Masculinity: A Cross-Cultural Analysis of Men’s Lifestyle Magazine Advertisements

The increasing global popularity of men’s lifestyle magazines offers a unique opportunity to study how advertising constructs masculinity across cultures. This study conducted a content analysis of 636 ads from the three most popular men’s lifestyle magazines in Taiwan, China, and the United States to examine the representations of masculinity in their advertisements between 2008 and 2010. The objectives were to determine how masculinities are currently portrayed in terms of types and roles. The study found that the magazines from all three countries typically portrayed men as refined and sophisticated. The defining characteristic of global hegemonic masculinity is commodity consumption, with a particular emphasis on a trendy and refined appearance. We found no significant cross-cultural differences in the types of masculinity, namely, “Vigorous and Macho”, “Refined and Sophisticated”, and “Trendy and Cool”. The traditional preference for “Refined and Sophisticated” in Chinese and Taiwanese ads and a preference for “Vigorous and Macho” in the U.S. ads have largely disappeared. Instead, the global consumption market and its associated consumer culture are the primary determinants regarding representations of masculinity in men’s lifestyle magazine ads. This global culture may underlie the lack of differences found.     

Regulatory focus influences perseveration and distractibility in task switching

In two experiments, we investigated the effect of regulatory focus (Higgins, Am Psychol, 52, 1280–1300, 1997) on people’s maintenance and switching behavior. In the experimental tasks, participants were asked to react selectively to one category of stimuli while ignoring the other. After several practice trials, participants had to switch either to new stimuli which were paired with former target stimuli (i.e., in the perseveration condition), or switch to former distracter stimuli which were paired with new stimuli (i.e., in the learned irrelevance condition). Results from both experiments indicated that a promotion focus promoted switching to new stimuli in the perseveration condition, at the cost of poorer performance on switching to former distracters in the learned irrelevance condition. This pattern of results applied to both chronic individual differences in regulatory focus (Experiment 1), and regulatory focus temporarily manipulated in the laboratory (Experiment 2). It suggests that whereas a promotion focus indeed promotes cognitive flexibility, it also incurs a cost in terms of increased likelihood of being distracted.
