In a recent theoretical model of attention-deficit/hyperactivity disorder (ADHD), Barkley (1997a) predicted that ADHD children experience impairments in their psychological sense of time. This was demonstrated in a series of experiments by Barkley, Koplowicz, Anderson, and McMurray (1997). The present study sought to investigate the effects of ADHD subtype, stimulus duration, mode of presentation (visual versus auditory) and distractors on the performance of a simple time reproduction task. Data were obtained from 44 ADHD children (14 predominantly inattentive and 30 combined type) and 44 age-matched Controls using the Time Perception Application version 1.0 (Barkley, University of Massachusetts Medical Center, 1998). Results revealed that the ADHD children made significantly larger errors on Visual time reproduction tasks than the Controls, regardless of ADHD subtype or the presence of distractors. Furthermore, ADHD children were more likely to overestimate the shorter time intervals (0.5 and 2 s) and underestimate the longer time intervals (3, 4 and 6 s) relative to Controls. No group differences were observed on the auditory time reproduction task, with both ADHD and Control groups consistently underestimating the durations to be reproduced. The results of this study provide further support for the prediction that children with ADHD have an impaired sense of time.  相似文献

Knowledge seems to be a good thing, or at least better than epistemic states that fall short of it, such as true belief. Understanding too seems to be a good thing, perhaps better even than knowledge. In a number of recent publications, Duncan Pritchard tries to account for the value of understanding by claiming that understanding is a cognitive achievement and that achievements in general are valuable. In this paper, I argue that coming to understand something need not be an achievement, and so Pritchard's explanation of understanding's value fails. Next, I point out that Pritchard's is just one of many attempts to account for the value of an epistemic state – whether it be understanding, knowledge, or whatever – by appeal to the notion of achievement or, more generally, the notion of success because of ability. Tentatively, I offer reasons to be sceptical about the prospects of any such account.  相似文献

The present study examined older and younger adults’ ability to use top-down processes to mitigate the effects of display noise during simple feature, visual search. As display noise levels increased, older adults (age 60–74 years, n = 32) exhibited greater top-down search reaction time (RT) benefits (bottom-up minus top-down search RT), compared to younger adults (age 18–27, n = 32). Older adults’ ability to mitigate the effects of noise was further assessed with RT variability, as measured by intra-individual standard deviations across trials. Older adults again exhibited larger top-down benefits (i.e., less RT variability) compared to younger adults, and more so when display noise was present vs. absent. These results suggest a sparing of top-down processes with age (Madden, Whiting, Spaniol, & Bucur, 2005; Psychology and Aging, 20, 317), and that top-down processes in older adults enhance search efficiency by optimizing signal-to-noise ratios.  相似文献

Slavery and its aftermath have created multiple challenges that are unique to the African American community. Although literature exists within other disciplines, no published empirical study within the marriage and family therapy literature has examined the residual effects of slavery. We used a modified Delphi methodology to explore the residual effects of slavery on African Americans and to determine resultant clinical implications. To obtain information from panelists who have expertise in this area, we conducted three rounds of data collection: an open-ended questionnaire, a Likert-scale questionnaire, and a round of in-depth interviews. Based on our analysis of the data collected, this empirical study describes the influence of the residual effects of slavery, implications for clinicians and directions for future research.

This paper argues that the answer to the question, what has to be learned, needs to be established before the question, how is it learned, can be meaningfully addressed. Based on this conviction, some of the limitations of current and past research on skill acquisition are discussed. Motivated by the dynamical systems approach, the question of “what has to be learned” was tackled by setting up a non-linear mathematical model of the task (i.e. learning to make sideways movements on a ski apparatus). On the basis of this model, the phase lag between movements of the platform of the apparatus and the actions of the subject was isolated as an ensemble variable reflecting the timing of the subject in relation to the dynamics of the apparatus. This variable was subsequently used to study “how” the task was learned in a discovery learning experiment, in which predictions stemming from the model were tested and confirmed. Overall, these findings provided support for the hypothesis, formulated by Bernstein (1967), that one of the important effects of practice is learning to make use of reactive forces, thereby reducing the need for active muscular forces.

In addition, the data from a previous learning experiment on the ski apparatus—the results of which had been equivocal—were reconsidered. The use of phase lag as a dependent variable provided a resolution of those findings.

On the basis of the confirmatory testing of predictions stemming from the model and the clarification of findings from a previous experiment, it is argued that the dynamical systems approach put forward here provides a powerful method for pursuing issues in skill acquisition. Suggestions are made as to how this approach can be used to systematically pursue the questions that arise as a natural outcome of the experimental evidence presented here.  相似文献

Previous research suggests that sets of similar items are represented using a rapid averaging mechanism that automatically extracts statistical properties within 50 ms. However, typically in these studies, displays are not masked, so it is possible that the sets are available for longer than this duration. In the present study, using masked displays, we (a) tested a newly proposed strategy for extracting the mean size of a set of circles, and (b) more precisely evaluated the time course of rapid averaging. The results indicate that when viewing conditions are poor, performance can be explained by assuming that observers rely on information from previous trials. In this study, observers required at least a 200-ms exposure time in order to derive the average size of a set of circles without relying on information from previously-viewed sets, suggesting that rapid averaging is not as fast as previously assumed and, therefore, that it may not be an automatic process.  相似文献
