The phonological loop model for retention of auditory verbal material in working memory, developed by Baddeley, assumes that irrelevant speech and phonological similarity influence only one and the same element of the system—that is, the phonological short-term store. We tested this idea by recording eventrelated potentials (ERPs) to auditorily presented letters that were phonologically similar or dissimilar and were to be memorized in the presence of more or less disturbing irrelevant speech. Irrelevant speech and phonological similarity caused ERP effects with clearly different scalp topographies, indicating that these factors influence different brain systems and hence probably different cognitive elements. Moreover, ERPs indicated that the phonological similarity effect might involve processes at the level of phonological analysis. Our data also support recent suggestions that the irrelevant speech effect is not based on the phonological similarity between relevant and irrelevant material, but on the phonological variability within the irrelevant stream.  相似文献

In the present study in 20 healthy subjects, event-related potentials (ERPs) were used to investigate the identification of picture stimuli. Each of 36 landscape pictures and 36 scrambled pictures was presented by a tachistoscope repeatedly until the subject made an identification response. Presentation of one picture was finished after 12 exposures. On the average, landscapes were identified after 5.8 ± 0.4 exposures; identification responses to scrambles were always wrong and occurred after 11.8 ± 0.1 exposures. Latencies and amplitude measures were assessed for P2, P3, N400, and the slow wave (SW). Changes in P2 across stimulus presentations did not differ between landscapes and scrambles excluding this component from being indicative for the processing of stimulus meaning. Amplitude of P3 generally declined across presentations, but increased prior to identification for landscape pictures. N400 rapidly declined across presentations of landscapes, but less rapidly for scrambles. The SW increased across stimulus presentations. This increase was more pronounced for landscape than scrambled pictures. The pattern of ERP changes can be interpreted in a framework of a stepwise inhibition of spreading activation within semantic memory with progressing picture identification.  相似文献

Chicks were hatched and raised in white or monochromatic sodium (589 nm) light. They were trained on a 590 (+) vs. 580 (-) nm successive discrimination. The combined results of two experiments indicated that rearing illumination did not affect discrimination acquisition. All subjects given generalization tests after discrimination training exhibited peak shifts that were equivalent for the two rearing conditions. The peak shifts exhibited by the monochromatically reared subjects represent maximum responding to stimuli they had not previously seen. This result further confirms the notion that behavioral control by the spectral dimension in birds is organized independently of differential early experience on that dimension.  相似文献

Persistence and change in sex-role stereotypes were examined by replicating in 1978 a study of sex-role conceptions published by Sherriffs and McKee in 1957. Results suggested that in many particulars sex-role stereotypes have changed little over the intervening two decades. Respondents of both sexes continued to view men as more forceful, independent, stubborn, and reckless than women; and women continued to be viewed as more mannerly, giving, emotional, and submissive than men. On the other hand, many changes in sex-role conceptions were also found to have occurred. Especially for female respondents, results suggested that stereotypes have changed in the direction of greater favorability toward women and less favorability toward men. The relevance of these findings to the psychological understanding of social change is discussed.  相似文献

Summary Colors perceived by normal, protanomalous, and deuteranomalous trichromats were scaled by magnitude estimation. As a result, opponent-colors functions were obtained which show the hue sensations produced by spectral lights. For color-normal observers, the loci of maximal hue sensations were different in some aspects from those expected from current opponent-colors theories.The results obtained from the anomalous observers confirm the view that the causes of prot- and of deuteranomalous vision consist in reverse shifts of the long- and middle-wavelength cone sensitivities respectively. It was found that anomalous trichromats perceive less red in the violet spectrum than do normal subjects. This finding may be explained by the hypothesis that short-wave-length red is produced by a secondary maximum of the long-wavelength cone excitation. In the experiment, the main defect of anomalous trichromats, compared with normal subjects, consisted in the high instability of hue perception and hue recognition. This instability may be explained by an unfavorable signal/noise relation created by the similarity of the two long-wavelength receptor sensibilities in the anomalous red/green systems.  相似文献

A biofeedback paradigm was developed for self-regulation of cortical DC-shifts. Subjects received continuous visual feedback of their actual DC-shift during six sec. intervals. Feedback trial series alternated with transfer test trial series. Several studies demonstrated that subjects are able to achieve cortical self-regulation which is maintained and even improved in transfer test trials. This method is used to investigate the covariation of DC-shifts and performance in reaction time tasks, mental tasks and signal detection by varying DC-shifts systematically. The procedure was also applied to different patient groups to test the functional significance of distinct brain regions and to explore deficits in patient groups.  相似文献

Inmates and correctional officers in a Lwnty jail made attributions of responsibility and predicted each other's attributions in response to four hypothetical stimulus incidents varying in severity of the inmate's intentional misbehavior and the severity of the officer's intentional retribution. When the misbehavior and retribution were moderate, subjects blamed both participants about equally. However, both over- and underreactions to the stimulus inmate's misbehavior elicited defensiveness, with both officers and inmates more likely to attribute responsibility to their opposite role character. In addition, both inmates and officers appeared to respond defensively to severe but equitable retributions. Subjects blamed each other, and, anticipating the other's defensiveness, expected to be blamed. Examination of the data suggested that subjects may have responded stereotypically rather than empathetically, and that defensiveness impeded rather than facilitated predictive accuracy. Results were consistent with previous research, increasing the generality of the “blame the other-expect to be blamed” effect. Additional analyses indicated that inmates were more likely than officers to notice mitigating circumstances when considering the inmates' responsibility. Three recommendations were made which may help to forestall inmate reactivity to retributions: (1) Jail personnel should have objective and clear definitions as to what constitutes major and minor infractions; (2) inmates should be aware of these criteria; and (3) jail personnel should be sensitive to mitigating circumstances and moderate their retribution or anticipate possible reactivity from inmates.  相似文献

This study investigates the possibility that results of within-subjects studies tend to be design-specific. In a study of impression formation 3×3 row-by-column designs were presented to two groups of judges. The first design (standard-design) included high. Medium, and low levels of the independent variables. The second design (comparison design) included a high/medium/low variation of one independent variable and a high/medium/high variation of the second variable. The judges were asked to reproduce informations. They received relevant informations (which should be reproduced) and additional informations (which were irrelevant for their task). The pattern of results is different within the two designs. While the standard-design reveals a significant main effect for the relevant information, the comparison-design reveals an additional interaction effect between relevant and irrelevant information. The results are attributed to the fact that the design itself is a stimulus.  相似文献

In Experiment 1, three groups of pigeons were taught to discriminate vertical lines (positive) from horizontal (negative). One group was then given true-discrimination training between two colors, a second group was equally reinforced for responding to the colors (pseudodiscrimination), while the third group was not run. The pseudodiscrimination group then provided a flatter gradient on the dimension of line orientation than either of the others, which did not differ. A second experiment demonstrated that this flattening effect could be completely counteracted when pseudodiscrimination was followed by true discrimination before the generalization test. The results are discussed within the framework of current research on attentional factors governing generalization gradients; pseudodiscrimination affects tests of stimulus control rather than its acquisition. When it intervenes between acquisition and testing, it appears to produce a “lapse” rather than a “loss” of the memory of the first-trained stimuli.  相似文献
