ABSTRACT: To the question “Why suicide?” a tentative framework is proposed, taking the form of a syndrome of five components: (a) commitment; (b) rigidity; (c) failure; (d) shame; and (e) isolation. These are quite similar to the conclusions of a study by Dorothy Miller. The syndrome is psychological as well as sociological, deals with the response of the suicider to crisis, and suggests mechanisms lacking in other theoretical frameworks. Quantitative and qualitative data taken from interviews with survivors of well over 100 suiciders support the framework. Also discussed are possible further refinements of the syndrome, its adequacy, and its applications to intervention with suicidal persons. 相似文献

Associations between suicidal behavior and social‐ecological variables were examined among 1,618 Latina high school students (mean age = 15) from the nationally representative Add Health sample (68% were U.S.‐born). Ideations were associated with having a suicidal friend, lower perceived father support, and overall parental caring. Attempts were associated with having a suicidal friend, and lower perceived teacher and parental support. Peer and mother relationship variables were not predictors of ideations or attempts. The protective role of father and teacher support has not previously been emphasized in the literature. Selectional preferences have a long history in both generative and computational linguistics. However, since the publication of Resnik's dissertation in 1993, a new approach has surfaced in the computational linguistics community. This new line of research combines knowledge represented in a pre‐defined semantic class hierarchy with statistical tools including information theory, statistical modeling, and Bayesian inference. These tools are used to learn selectional preferences from examples in a corpus. Instead of simple sets of semantic classes, selectional preferences are viewed as probability distributions over various entities. We survey research that extends Resnik's initial work, discuss the strengths and weaknesses of each approach, and show how they together form a cohesive line of research. 相似文献
