Twelve Ss made binary decisions with feedback on numbers from one of two normal distributions with equal variances and unequal means. Sequences of distribution choices corresponded to first-order two-state Markov processes with probabilities of change of state of p1 = p2 = .50, p1 = p2 = .75, and p1 = p2 = .25. Performance was best (in d’ terms) when p1 = p2 ≠ .50. First-order sequential response dependencies tended to mirror the first-order stimulus dependencies. Violations of a fixed cutoff point decision rule were concentrated in the region of the average critical point, with a bandwidth of about 1/2σ, in which violations were strikingly more frequent than would be expected if they had occurred randomly. These results imply that in this task Ss are using a criterion-band decision rule instead of a fixed cutoff point rule, and that they are basing decisions in the region of the criterion band on information extracted from the sequence of decisions presented to them. Consistent relationships are found between Ss′ absolute judgments of the value of a stimulus and the previous sequence of both stimuli and responses. The form and magnitude of these sequential effects are shown to depend on the presence or absence of feedback and on task difficulty. The pattern of the sequential effects found allows the conclusion that they are due to purely response-system processes. A two-stage model of the judgment process is proposed, and it is argued that observed assimilative effects account for the central tendency effects observed in category judgments. 相似文献
Teachers were trained in the systematic use of attention and praise to reduce the disruptive classroom behavior of four first-grade children. Observation measures showed a significant improvement from baseline to treatment for these children and no significant changes for same-class controls. While the amount of teacher attention to target children remained the same from baseline to treatment, the proportion of attention to task-relevant behavior of these children increased. The 50th anniversary of the Swampscott Conference offers an opportunity to reflect on a community psychology setting, The Consultation Center at Yale, that was formed in response to the 1963 Community Mental Health Act and the 1965 Swampscott Conference. The Center has flourished as a community psychology setting for practice, research, and training for 39 of the 50 years since Swampscott. Its creation and existence over this period offers an opportunity for reflection on the types of settings needed to sustain the field into the future. 相似文献
Research since the 1960s has consistently found that lay volunteers are better at helping suicidal callers than professionals. Yet, professional degrees are increasingly becoming requirements for helpline workers. In our first study, we conducted post hoc comparisons of U.S. helplines with all professional paid staff, all lay volunteers, and a mix of both, using silent monitoring and standardized assessments of 1,431 calls. The volunteer centers more often conducted risk assessments, had more empathy, were more respectful of callers, and had significantly better call outcome ratings. A second study of five Quebec suicide prevention centers used silent monitoring to compare telephone help in 1,206 calls answered by 90 volunteers and 39 paid staff. Results indicate no significant differences between the volunteers and paid employees on outcome variables. However, volunteers and paid staff with over 140 hours of call experience had significantly better outcomes. Unlike the United States, Quebec paid employees were not required to have advanced professional degrees. We conclude from these results and previous research that there is no justification for requiring that suicide prevention helpline workers be mental health professionals. In fact, the evidence to date indicates that professionals may be less effective in providing telephone help to suicidal individuals when compared to trained lay volunteers. 相似文献
Tackling early leaving from education and training (ELET) is one of the main education policy targets of the European Union and many of its member states. This paper offers new insights on this issue by studying how so-called at-risk students develop their educational trajectory by embedding their attitudes towards and engagement in schooling within the various support networks they navigate. We argue that the concept of school engagement, operationalized within the broader theoretical framework of the self-system model of motivational development, is crucial for better understanding ELET. The structural equation modelling is based upon survey data from 1401 students in grade 10 and 12 of vocational tracks across 26 different urban school locations in Flanders, Belgium. The results show that parental, peer and in particular teacher support directly and indirectly strengthen students’ academic and behavioural engagement. We argue that universal and targeted support by educators can positively impact pro-school attitudes and school engagement of so-called at-risk students and may be one of the most important strategies in addressing ELET.
