Porters to Heaven

This essay presents Augustine as a rich ethical resource on issues of wealth and poverty. Contrary to prevalent views that he had little to say on issues of economic justice, Augustine decries wealth as morally dangerous, promotes the agency of the poor in advocating for themselves with the wealthy, and supports distributive justice. Augustine envisions an interdependent Christian community where the wealthy not only help the poor, but rely on the poor to help them achieve salvation by “bearing their goods to heaven,” as Augustine describes the receipt of alms. Augustine's view of wealth's moral danger is an apt resource for ethicists interested in virtue. His insistence on poor people's moral agency and interdependence among poor and wealthy speak to pressing issues of justice in today's unequal societies.     

Twin similarity in cardiovascular stress response

Cardiovascular (CV) responses to laboratory stressors were measured in 12 pairs of identical and 21 pairs of fraternal adult male twins. For this study, blood pressure and heart rate were measured during a mental arithmetic task and the Cold Pressor Test. The analyses of cardiovascular responses to these stressors were designed to test for the presence of a genetic component in cardiovascular reactivity in an adult sample of twins aged 54-64 years. The results suggest that certain measures of cardiovascular reactivity to laboratory stressors may be heritable for both physical and psychological stressors. The possible role of this genetic component in the etiology and course of coronary heart disease is discussed.     

PREDICTORS OF ENGAGEMENT IN PSYCHODYNAMIC PSYCHOTHERAPY DERIVING FROM PRE‐ASSESSMENT QUESTIONNAIRES

Patients attending the Maudsley Hospital Psychotherapy Unit complete a semi‐structured questionnaire as a matter of standard procedure prior to assessment. Clinical experience suggests that this instrument reveals important aspects of a patient's internal world, regularly borne out at the assessment interview. The questionnaire may thus contribute to predicting engagement in the therapeutic relationship. To evaluate this hypothesis we conducted a qualitative analysis of 40 questionnaires, 20 of patients who attended 20 sessions or more, the other 20 of patients who discontinued at or before the sixth session. We differentially explored characteristics that may indicate the probability of patients' engagement and, hence, help to predict outcome in terms of completion of the treatment. The results indicate that there are no strong discriminating factors discernable in the questionnaires for the prediction of engagement in psychotherapy. Two themes emerged from the analysis that seemed to have a moderate bearing on completion. These are the willingness of patients to observe themselves reflectively as well as the awareness that psychotherapy might be a difficult but necessary and beneficial undertaking.
