Black freshmen in large colleges: a survey

This study sought to answer the basic question: What is the gap between published articles on black admissions and actual admissions practices in the colleges? Results indicated that very few blacks (3 percent of 1969 entering freshmen) are entering the large, primarily white universities. While many schools have established special programs for blacks, the admissions procedures used for these programs and for regular black admissions remain very traditional.     

Noncognitive Predictors of Counseling Center Use by International Students

International students (N= 230) completed the Noncognitive Questionnaire (NCQ) prior to matriculation as freshmen. Results indicated that noncognitive variables, shown previously to be predictive of academic success for international students, also were predictive of their utilization of counseling center services over a 4-year period. The three noncognitive variables that significantly (p<.05) predicted counseling center use were understanding and ability to deal with racism, preference for long-term goals over short-term, immediate needs, and non-traditional ways of acquiring knowledge. Implications for designing outreach and counseling services for international students are discussed.     

The John Dewey Academy: A Residential College Preparatory Therapeutic High School. A Dialogue With Tom Bratter

The John Dewey Academy is described and discussed by Thomas Bratter, president. The school views its mission to provide intensive educational and therapeutic assistance to self-destructive adolescents who are psychologically intact and have superior potential. Similar to other secondary schools, The John Dewey Academy wants to be judged by the reputations of those colleges that accept its graduates.     

Using Student Paraprofessionals in the Treatment of Eating Disorders

A rationale for adjunctive treatment in responding to eating disorder clients at a university counseling center is presented. The program described provides a highly structured internship experience for paraprofessional psychology trainees who serve as therapeutic aides and peer counselors to eating disorder clients. This collaborative Counseling Center and Psychology Department model emphasizes intern training, close supervision, and professional-paraprofessional cotreatment of anorexic and bulimic clients. Program evaluation methods and therapy outcome data are presented. Advantages of this treatment-training program for all participants are discussed.     

A Multimodal Approach in Dealing with Chronic Epstein-Barr Viral Syndrome

Chronic Epstein-Barr Viral Syndrome (CEBV) is a puzzling and controversial disease with a variety of symptoms that frequently include depression and emotional debilitation. The following article describes CEBV, offers some diagnostic signs, and suggests a possible treatment strategy based on the multimodal approach. I am writing this letter in an attempt to try and explain the way my life has changed due to an illness called Chronic Epstein-Barr Viral Syndrome, or CEBV. I was not diagnosed at first. … I saw doctor after doctor and (had) test after test before being diagnosed … all of this began three years ago. I started getting weak, fatigued, headaches, swollen glands, sleep disturbances, light-headed and having pain and weakness in my joints. I soon was unable to perform at work or in my various sports activities. I sought help medically … he (the physician) put me in the hospital and ran numerous tests, all showing normal … this did not help either, I was still sick.
