The present study tests the hypothesis that attention-switching is time-consuming and performance-limiting. Analysis of previous research on counting interaurally presented clicks shows that estimates of ‘switch-times’ can be made, based on the data of Guzy and Axelrod (1972). In the earlier click-counting studies, however, the number of clicks to be counted and the number of physical switches between the ears were confouned. Hence the number of clicks, number of physical switches and interval between clicks were independently varied. The results showed that (a) counting performance did not decrease monotonically with increasing number of switches in the click sequence; (b) no difference in counting performance could be found between the monaural and completely alternating interaural presentation; (c) when the number of switches in the sequence was small and equal groups of clicks alternated between ears, performance dramatically improved. With these kinds of sequences, subjects presumably do not count the clicks one at a time, but subitize a group of clicks.  相似文献

This paper proposes a probabilistic model of how humans identify the number of dots within a briefly presented visual display. The model is an application of Thurstone’s law of comparative judgment, and it is assumed that the internal representation of numerosity consists of log-spaced random variables. The discrimination between any two different numerosities is consequently described as a function of max/rain, where max and rain are the larger and smaller numbers, respectively. The model was tested in two experiments in which the Weber fraction for numerosity, corresponding with the critical ratio of max and min, was found to have the value of 162. It was concluded that the classical span of subitizing numerosity is but a special case of the span of discrimination.  相似文献

In tasks where subjects are required to tap in synchrony to a sequence of evenly spaced uniform auditory stimuli (a metronome), tap onsets typically tend to anticipate the metronome's stimulus onsets. We investigated this phenomenon, called “negative asynchrony”, as a function of (1) the duration of the stimuli (1 or 2, 50, 100, and 300 msec), (2) the rise time of the stimuli (0%, 40%, and 80% of stimulus duration), and (3) the interstimulus onset interval duration (500, 700, and 900 msec). The results from three experiments with 28 different subjects showed a significant reduction of the negative asynchrony with longer stimulus durations, and the reduction was not significantly affected by the tempo of the stimulus sequence. Also, a prolongation of the rise time of the stimuli caused an analogous reduction of the negative asynchrony. Findings were taken to suggest that subjects use the perceptual centre rather than physical onset of stimulus as the cue with which to synchronize  相似文献

Assumptions of a theory, still influential, of tempo perception by Schulze (1978) are reconsidered in view of counter-evidence from other time-perception and timing studies. Specifically, it is shown that the role of base tempo of stimuli and the orientation of tempo change (acceleration versus deceleration) have to be incorporated in them. Therefore, Schulze's assumptions were extended so as to include the two stimulus parameters. A generalized version of Schulze's internal beat model, one of three formal elaborations of the theory, was tested in an experiment which required subjects (N = 17) to tell the direction of change (acceleration or deceleration) in metronomic tone sequences presented at tempi of 1, 2, or 4 Hz, the amount of tempo change being varied in steps of 2% between –10% (acceleration) and + 10%, including zero change. Psychometric curves obtained from logistic regression analysis showed the limitation of the original assumptions and supported the proposed generalization of Schulze's model. The validity of the theoretical interpretation of the data was discussed with respect to some methodological constraints in the experiment, such as the presentation of the different tempo conditions and the time length of the metronomic stimuli used, and with respect to their applicability to the performance of expressive drift (rubato versus accelerando) in music.  相似文献

This paper describes a noninvasive, relatively inexpensive, and simple to use system developed by the authors for monitoring the visual inspection behavior of someone free to select any viewing angle of an object by moving about it while at the same time being able to rotate it. The present study reports the measurement of response latencies and the recording of eye movements in a task in which adults had to enumerate dots in figures that differed in number of dots (nd = 19–23) and grouping of dots. The functional relationship between latencies per dot and mean group size was in agreement with earlier findings (van Oeffelen & Vos, 1982). Temporal information from eye movement data indicated that the relative contribution of fixation durations to overall latency was far larger than the contribution of saccades, which superseded the contribution from eyeblinks. Spatial information in the form of eye movement trajectories indicated that, in general, there occurred one or two fixations at the starting position. From this position onward, eye movements were directed toward areas of dots rather than to each dot in particular. Scanning behavior was sometimes reiterative, in the sense that groups of dots were visited more than once. The results are discussed with respect to the nature of strategies employed during a dot-enumeration task.  相似文献

The occurrence of "blocking" was investigated in jungle fowl chicks (Gallus gallus spadiceus B.) in an imprinting situation. In Experiment 1, chicks were simultaneously exposed to two stationary coloured cylinders, either two red cylinders (Group RR), a yellow and a red cylinder (YR), or two yellow cylinders (YY). After six days of exposure, the cylinders were removed from the cages and replaced by a yellow and a blue cylinder (i.e. YB) for each chick. This second phase of the experiment lasted for seven days. When the blue cylinder was presented alone during tests at different stages in Phase 2, the RR birds spent significantly more time with this cylinder and emitted fewer shrill calls than the chicks in the YR and YY groups. In Experiment 2, RR and YY birds were reared as in Experiment 1, except that in the second phase of the experiment they were exposed to a blue cylinder only. In this experiment the development of an attachment to the novel blue cylinder proceeded similarly in the RR and YY birds. In Experiment 3, it was found that chicks that were reared with a yellow and a red cylinder preferred the latter stimulus. Thus, although in the first phase of Experiment 1 the RR birds had been exposed to a more attractive stimulus, in tests during the second phase they spent more time with a novel stimulus (B) than the YY birds. These results are consistent with the suggestion that imprinting to a novel stimulus is "blocked" to some extent when that stimulus is presented in compound with another stimulus to which the animal has previously been exposed.  相似文献
