There are some American Indian/Alaska Native communities that exhibit high rates of suicide. The interpersonal theory of suicide (Joiner, 2005) posits that lethal suicidal behavior is likely preceded by the simultaneous presence of thwarted belongingness, perceived burdensomeness, and acquired capability. Past research has shown that hope and optimism are negatively related to suicidal ideation, some of the constructs in the interpersonal theory of suicide, and suicide risk for the general population. This is the first study to investigate hope and optimism in relation to suicidal ideation, thwarted belongingness, perceived burdensomeness, and acquired capability for American Indians/Alaska Natives. Results showed that hope and optimism negatively predicted thwarted belongingness, perceived burdensomeness, and suicidal ideation. However, these results were not found for acquired capability. Overall, this study suggests that higher levels of hope and optimism are associated with lower levels of suicidal ideation, thwarted belongingness, and perceived burdensomeness in this American Indian/Alaska Native sample.  相似文献

ABSTRACT

What is story completion? How come I’ve never heard of it? Can it be useful for me as a qualitative researcher? A relatively unknown method for qualitative data collection, story completion has a long history of use in psychotherapy practice and (quantitative) developmental psychology research. We believe it has untapped, exciting potential as a qualitative technique in and beyond psychology, offering something quite different to many of the popular methods (e.g., interviews, focus groups). In this article, an introduction to an exciting Special Issue that discusses and demonstrates the potential of story completion, we provide a brief history of the development of story completion as a qualitative technique and an overview of design, sampling, and data analysis in story completion research. We finish by highlighting potential pitfalls of story completion, alongside a discussion of the possibilities it offers, and briefly introduce the empirical papers in the Special Issue.  相似文献

This study examined how urbanisation may modify adolescents' values and activities concerning family obligation by surveying 572 adolescents (Mage = 15.75, SD = .73) in rural and urban Vietnam. Compared with their rural peers, urban adolescents reported a stronger sense of family obligation but spent less time actually engaging in family assistance, findings that were partly explained by urban households' less financial hardship and higher parental education levels. As expected, stronger family obligation values were associated with greater family assistance activities across rural and urban Vietnam. However, stronger family obligation values were associated with more study hours only in urban Vietnam, indicating that urbanisation may broaden the meaning of family obligation to encompass the academic domain. Additionally, weaker family obligation values were associated with more employment hours only in rural Vietnam, suggesting that rural adolescents with little attachment to the traditional value of family obligation may pursue autonomy through employment outside the home. In traditionally familistic societies undergoing urbanisation, family obligation may take on different meaning depending on adolescents' ecological settings that construct cultural values and behavioural norms.  相似文献

In this study, an attempt was made to evaluate changes in the self‐image of traumatized refugees receiving short‐term psychotherapy. Fourteen clients with war and torture experiences were followed during and after trauma‐focused therapies with self‐rating instruments. Outcome was measured with SCL‐90, measuring overall psychiatric symptoms, and with PTSS‐10, measuring Post‐traumatic Stress Disorder (PTSD) symptoms. Self‐image was measured with Structural Analysis of Social Behavior (SASB). The analyses showed considerable remission of both general psychiatric and PTSD‐related symptoms, but more moderate changes in self‐image aspects. The positive aspect of the self‐image was virtually non‐related to the symptom measures and did not change after the termination of the therapy; the negative aspect of the self‐image was more strongly related to the symptoms and changed mainly on the last measurement occasion, 15 months after the therapy end. When clients with good and poor outcome were compared, it was found that those with good outcome had higher initial levels on both the positive and the negative aspects of the self‐images. This was tentatively interpreted as indicating that clients who had invested more energy in their self‐image were better able to utilize the therapy. Different development in the self‐image for these two groups indicated that for some clients, the treatment process might have entailed too much strain.  相似文献
