Traditionally, women have been perceived as using token resistance to avoid appearing desirous of sexual activity and to gain some degree of restrictive control in heterosexual dating interactions. In the current study, we examined both men's and women's use of token resistance and the reasons they attributed for their use of this dating behavior. A total of 108 male and 199 female heterosexual college students completed the Dating Behavior Questionnaire (DBQ) used to examine the use of token resistance, as well as a number of attitudinal and behavioral measures. An ANOVA revealed that a higher percentage of men than women reported the use of token resistance. The types of reasons men and women attributed to their behavior did not differ. Token resistance reportedly served a number of functions, including an expressive game-playing function. Most interactions were perceived by both men and women as being pleasant, despite concerns by researchers that token resistance may be associated with a partner's subsequent use of sexual coercion. Thus, token resistance does not appear to be indicative of adverserial relations. The findings are discussed in terms of the benefits for men and women of relaxing the constraints of traditional gender roles with regard to dating behavior.  相似文献

Two job satisfaction surveys tested the hypothesis that discrepancy models provide stronger predictions of satisfaction than do more parsimonious models relying solely on a single component of discrepancy scores. Questionnaire data from samples of 180 working college students and 125 human service workers focused on specific facets of the job, such as: pay, promotion opportunity, and hours of work. Wanted amount of specific job facets was the standard of comparison considered in both surveys. The questionnaires provided measures of facet satisfaction, facet amount, wanted amount, the perceived discrepancy between facet amount and wanted amount as well as the calculated discrepancy between facet amount and wanted amount. Results from 60 tests of differences between correlations provided mixed support. Discrepancy scores were consistently stronger predictors of satisfaction than were wanted amount scores; 24 of 30 tests provided significant support and only 2 of 30 tests provided significant differences in the direction opposite to the hypothesis. Discrepancy scores were not, however, consistently stronger predictors of satisfaction than were facet amount scores; only 8 of 30 tests provided significant support and 8 of 30 test provided significant differences in the direction opposite to the hypothesis. Discussion focused on the importance of addressing these findings in efforts to improve discrepancy theories of satisfaction.M. Intravenous injection of histamine to rabbits was used as a prototype in an investigation of the mechanism of sudden death due to anaphylaxis and other causes. The “dive” reflex, bradycardia due to activation of the ophthalmic branch of the fifth cranial nerve, was induced in thirty-seven of the animals while they inhaled a very small amount of cigarette smoke. Associated with the resulting bradycadia were lowered blood pH and increased serum content of lactic acid and potassium and increased peripheral arterial constriction with elevation of diastolic blood pressure. Intravenous injection of 1 ml of histamine in the presence of the dive reflex induced potentially fatal ventricular arrhythmia, but no cardiac disturbance when administered while the dive reflex was inactive, thereby strongly suggesting that sudden death in anaphylaxis may involve an overzealous response to a normally protective neural reflex.  相似文献

Results of research on college dropouts paint both a negative and a confusing picture of this group. The argument presented in this paper is that consideration of the college student's environment can help to resolve some of the apparent contradictions among the various characteristics of the college dropout. Several environmental dimensions hypothesized to be relevant to the learning process are discussed. Against the background provided by these dimensions, two approaches to the student's interaction with his environment are described. One of these approaches is based on knowledge about the learning process, the other on a developmental conceptualization of the college experience.  相似文献

Infant and child facial cues have been shown to influence decisions and perceptions associated with parental care in adults. Low body weight reflects health problems in infants and children; therefore, facial cues associated with low body weight may influence adult cognitive processes associated with parental care and investment. Facial images of infants and children were digitally manipulated to simulate cues of low body weight and presented to adults using a hypothetical adoption paradigm. Participants' ratings of adoption preference, cuteness, and health were significantly lower for the digitally manipulated low body weight facial images than their unaltered counterparts. These findings support the hypothesis that facial cues of poor health negatively influence adults' responses to infants and children.  相似文献

The researchers in this study examined the association between adaptive and maladaptive dimensions of perfectionism and self‐esteem. Confirmatory factor analysis and structural equations modeling were used to develop and test a model derived from theoretical links between perfectionism and self‐esteem. Path models revealed that adaptive perfectionism was positively associated with self‐esteem and maladaptive perfectionism was negatively associated with self‐esteem. Implications of discriminating between adaptive and maladaptive perfectionism in counseling research and practice are discussed.  相似文献

People can use a variety of different strategies to perform tasks and these strategies all have two characteristics in common. First, they can be evaluated in comparison with either an absolute or a relative standard. Second, they can be used at varying levels of consistency. In the present article, the authors develop a general theory of task performance called potential performance theory (PPT) that distinguishes between observed scores and true scores that are corrected for inconsistency (i.e., potential scores). In addition, they argue that any kind of improvement to task performance, whatever it may be, works by influencing either task strategies, which comprise all nonrandom components that are relevant to the task, or the consistency with which strategies are used. In the current study, PPT is used to demonstrate how task strategies and the consistencies with which they are used impact actual performance in the domain of morality. These conclusions are extended to other domains of task performance.  相似文献
