Employment of epileptic patients abroad and their fitness for travel

On the basis of relevant literature and from personal experience, the paper discusses problems of the fitness of epileptics to travel by air and to work and holiday abroad. As an aid to consultation, tentative recommendations are made.     

Computerized tomography and infusion test as a simultaneous study method in post-traumatic hydrocephalus

The cerebral compression of a patient with posttraumatic hydrocephalus was measured intraventricularly, and an intrathecas infusion test was made simultaneously with computed tomography. Substractive computed tomography pictures show that continuously increasing volume does not imply uniform enlargement of the ventricular system, the cornua of the lateral ventricles in particular exhibiting a frontal increase in size.     

Offspring sex ratio in hamsters is correlated with vaginal pH at certain times of mating

Golden hamsters (Mesocricetus auratus) are sexually receptive for 19-21 h around the time of ovulation. Vaginal pH was measured immediately before mating in four groups of animals each mated at a different time during the female's receptive period. Litter size and sex ratio (percentage male offspring) were recorded at parturition. Mean litter size decreased while offspring sex ratio increased in matings occurring later in estrus. Significant negative correlations were found between vaginal pH and sex ratio of subsequent litters when matings occurred during midestrus. Fluctuations in vaginal pH may differentially affect longevity, motility, or fertilizing capacity of X and Y sperm and/or may reflect other physiological changes in the female which occur over the receptive period. Such a prefertilization mechanism for sex ratio regulation could be highly adaptive since little or no parental reproductive potential is lost.     

Fathers' and mothers' speech to young infants

Fathers' and mothers' speech to infants was obtained during face-to-face interaction in a laboratory setting. Thirty-two father-infant pairs and 40 mother-infant pairs participated. Infants were divided equally by sex and among two age groups with mean ages of 3 and 9 months. Parental utterances were transcribed from videotapes. The utterances were analyzed in terms of their structure and content. There were many similarities in the structure of fathers' and mothers' speech. The speech of both parents was highly repetitive and contained many questions. There were also similarities in the content of fathers' and mothers' speech. Their belief in the infants' ability to think, feel, and act like persons was evident in their speech to the infants. The age of the infant was a significant factor in the analysis of many of the content categories. The sex of the infant and the sex of the parent were also significant factors in several of the analyses.This paper is based on a thesis submitted by the first author in partial fulfillment of the requirements for a master's degree. Some of the data reported here were obtained under a grant from the Spencer Foundation to the second author.     

Reminiscence and strategies of performance in rotary pursuit tracking

The maximum speed at which man detects and corrects errors is analyzed on the pursuit rotor. During the prerest performance, scores of about 220 msec. are found, for both extravertive and introvertive subjects. During the postrest performance a crossover effect appeared: extraverts had scores near 60 msec., while introverts did not surpass 100 msec. The results are discussed in the framework of Eysenck and Frith's (1977) theory of reminiscence.     

Acoustically evoked brain stem potentials in chronic alcoholism and withdrawal

BAEP studies hint at different neurophysiological findings between gamma and delta alcoholics. On the first day of withdrawal gamma alcoholics show slight vegetative withdrawal symptoms in the form of CNS hyperexitability trough the shortening of the early IPL. However delta alcoholics show prolongations of the late IPL which can be interpreted as a consequence of brain stem transmission disorders resulting from chronic intoxication. After four weeks the BAEP deviations found in both groups indicate a clear tendency of recovery which points to functional disorders.     

Splitting and ambivalence. On the therapeutic dilemma in treating patients with early damage

The article refers to the pathological problem of severe psychic disturbed patients (with: borderline syndromes/pathological narcism/character neurosis/basic faults and/or disorders of ego structure). The author refers to countertransferences and acting out of affects and reports on the changes and possibilities in the therapy of these patients. The therapists fundamental attitude will be described and supplemented by favouring a treatment in day-hospital-settings. Basic literature has been compiled and is reported as survey.     

The sociobiological ideas of Arthur Schopenhauer

Starting from the basic ideas of sociobiology we prove that Schopenhauer, in his "Metaphysics of Sexual Love", has to pass for a precursor of sociobiological thinking. Several consequences of this parallel are discussed: The quest for strategic principles of organismic growth and evolution as a positive characteristic of both approaches--the hypothesis of a dominant genetic determination of human behaviour as an outcome of a typical bourgeois view of mankind connecting Schopenhauer and sociobiologists--the necessity of taking into consideration biological predispositions of flexible (learned) behaviour as elements of sociobiological models enjoying the same rights as genetical ones--the utility of Schopenhauer's natural philosophy for the purpose of complementing historical knowledge of many disciplines (also psychology).
