Time trends in the effects of mindfulness-based cognitive therapy for depression: A meta-analysis

Recent studies suggest that the effects of cognitive therapies for depression show systematic changes over time. A meta-analysis was conducted to explore the temporal development of the effect of mindfulness-based cognitive therapy (MBCT) for current depression in studies that used the Beck Depression Inventory (BDI) or the Hamilton Depression Rating Scale (HDRS) as outcome measures. A systematic search of research databases yielded 20 studies that were included in the analyses. The results showed that MBCT is effective in reducing depressive symptoms. The effect sizes of studies using the BDI or the HDRS as an outcome measure were not moderated by the time of publication. Funnel plots and the trim and fill method suggested that publication bias was low. However, the number of available studies was small, and the time period investigated relatively short. The results should therefore be considered preliminary.

Interpretation as Historical, Constructivism, and History

Interpretation is construed, here, as synonymous with hermeneutics: understood as a source of knowledge – perhaps, after the apparently irremediable decline of epistemological foundationalism, the main modern epistemological strategy. In this sense, there is no difference in principle between epistemology and interpretation; the first is a form of the second.     

Testing equality of correlated proportions with incomplete data on both responses

Two test statistics are proposed for testing the equality of two correlated proportions when some observations are missing on both responses. The performance of these tests in terms of size and power is compared with other tests by means of Monte Carlo simulations. The proposed tests are easily computed and compare favorably with other tests.     

Relationships between job evaluation ratings and self-ratings of job characteristics

Self-ratings by 308 shop workers of their job variety, autonomy, task identity, and skill challenge correlate significantly with ratings by observers of the jobs' skill requirements. Self-ratings, however, are unrelated to observers' estimates of the physical demands of the jobs or to environmental conditions of the work. The self-ratings and observer measures provide complementary, not substitute, information. Self-ratings can signal person-job dysfunctions, and more objective job measures can identify possible sources of the dysfunctions. Modifications to job characteristics measures are discussed and suggestions are made to begin a new phase of programmatic job characteristics research.     

Working wives and women's rights: The connection between the employment status of wives and the feminist attitudes of husbands

Women in the labor force tend to have more profeminist attitudes on women's rights and sex roles than women working in the home. In turn, the husbands of wives employed outside the home are more supportive of feminist positions than the husbands of wives working in the home. The difference is greater on attitudes relating to employment and traditional roles in the home and family but also occurs on some items dealing with political rights and general sexual equality. The causal connection between the attitude of husbands and the labor-force status of their wives can not be demonstrated, but causation is believed to work in both directions.This research was done for the General Social Survey project directed by James A. Adaptation to time-varying signals and control-theory models of tracking-behaviour

Summary Control-theory models of tracking behaviour imply continuous negative feedback as opposed to discrete control, and they assume the existence of a quadratic error criterion. The experimental induction of an asymmetric error criterion gives rise to a nonlinear control strategy which is used here to investigate the process of adaptation of tracking strategy to disturbances with varying statistical parameters. Results show that tracking behaviour adapts to time-varying signals, but this adaptation is not based on an estimate of the statistical parameters of the disturbance, as is assumed by an optimal-control model of tracking behaviour. It is suggested that continuous tracking behaviour is a special case induced by specific experimental conditions. In general, a view of tracking behaviour as a sequence of discrete actions seems more appropriate.This work was supported by Deutsche Forschungsgemeinschaft.
