The present study examined performance across three two-choice tasks that used the same two stimuli, the same two stimulus locations, and the same two responses to determine how task demands can alter the Simon Effect, its distribution across reaction time, and its sequential modulation. In two of the tasks, repetitions of stimulus features were not confounded with sequences of congruent and incongruent trials. This attribute allowed us to investigate the sequential modulation of the Simon Effect in a two-choice task while equalizing the occurrence of feature repetitions. All tasks showed a similar sequential modulation, suggesting that it is not driven by feature repetitions. Moreover, distributional analyses revealed that the advantage for congruent trials decreased as reaction time increased similarly following congruent and incongruent trials. Finally, a large increase in RT was observed when repeated responses were made to novel stimuli and when novel responses were made to repeated stimuli. This effect also showed a sequential modulation regardless of whether the stimulus repeated. The findings suggest that, even in two-choice tasks, response selection is mediated by complex, dynamic representations that encode abstract properties of the task rather than just simple features.  相似文献

The logic of the Subtraction Method is used implicitly or explicitly in a variety of work, ranging from traditional response-time research to functional neuroimaging. One assumption of all forms of the Subtraction Method is that components may be inserted (or deleted) without causing changes in the remaining components. We tested this assumption as it applies to the duration of late motor processing using the lag between the onset of lateralized readiness potential (LRP) and the production of the required response as the measure of late motor processing. In contrast to a similar, previous study that used this approach (Miller & Low, 2001), we found differences in the LRP lags across the types of task that are used in the Subtraction Method. The LRP lag for simple-RT was shorter than the lags for either go/no-go or choice-RT. This finding constitutes evidence against an assumption required by the Subtraction Method, at least as applied to component durations, but can be explained in terms of a supplementary (non-subtractive) inhibitory component that is only employed in the go/no-go task.  相似文献

The consistent growth in the number of women entering the labor force and the need for research pertaining specifically to attitudes toward women working led to the development and validation of the Attitude Toward Working Mothers Scale (AWM). A 45-item Likert-type measure was developed and administered to 526 graduate students. Factor analyses demonstrated the scale was unidimensional. The scale was reduced to 32 items having high internal consistency (coefficient alpha =.95). Known-groups, discriminant, and experimental approaches to validity, all provided support for the scale's validity. Administration of the AWM Scale to educationally and vocationally disparate groups indicated the scale could be used with diverse populations.  相似文献

We present two experiments that examine the effects of colour transformation between study and test (from black and white to colour and vice versa, or from incorrectly coloured to correctly coloured and vice versa) on implicit and explicit measures of memory for diagnostically coloured natural objects (e.g., yellow banana). For naming and coloured-object decision (i.e., deciding whether an object is correctly coloured), there were shorter response times to correctly coloured-objects than to black-and-white and incorrectly coloured-objects. Repetition priming was equivalent for the different stimulus types. Colour transformation did not influence priming of picture naming, but for coloured-object decision priming was evident only for objects remaining the same from study to test. This was the case for both naming and coloured-object decision as study tasks. When participants were asked to consciously recognize objects that they had named or made coloured-object decisions to previously, whilst ignoring their colour, colour transformation reduced recognition efficiency. We discuss these results in terms of the flexibility of object representations that mediate priming and recognition.  相似文献

ABSTRACT No‐fault insurance schemes involve prohibiting exercise of the natural rights of individuals to recover damages from those whose negligence causes them harm. Public debate about no‐fault emphasises consequentialist benefits, and takes little account of the putative rights of individuals to recovery. I argue, however, that even on a relatively extreme rights‐based conception of justice, such as Robert Nozick’s, it may be possible to justify a no‐fault scheme. The argument proceeds by: (1) elucidating what compensation the Nozickian must offer in return for prohibiting an activity such as the private recovery of damages; and consequently (2) arguing that there is no prima facie reason to think that the compensation afforded by participation in a no‐fault scheme would be any less adequate than that afforded by participation in a system of tort law  相似文献
