In the typical induction of the orientation-contingent color aftereffect (CCAE), the stimuli are composed of elements that differ in both color and luminance. Three experiments are reported that show that chromatic contrast between stimulus elements is insufficient for the induction of the orientation-CCAE and that luminance contrast is necessary. When procedural artifacts are controlled, it has been difficult to demonstrate directed forgetting in pigeons. However, previous research with pigeons has not allowed for the reallocation of working memory (from forget items to remember items) on forget-cued trials as is possible in human directed forgetting experiments. In the present experiment, directed forgetting was found while controlling for procedural artifacts and allowing the pigeons to reallocate memory resources on forget trials. The standard Kripkean semantic theories for quantified modal logic allow the individuals that exist at other worlds to vary
from those that exist at the actual world. This causes a problem for those who deny the existence of non-actual individuals.
I focus on two prominent strategies for solving this problem, due respectively to Bernard Linsky and Edward Zalta (who identify
the possible individuals with the actual individuals) and Alvin Plantinga (who identifies the possible individuals with the
individual essences). I argue, contra various commentators, that both of these solutions are acceptable by the lights of those

This paper first discusses the relationship between Kullback–Leibler information (KL) and Fisher information in the context
of multi-dimensional item response theory and is further interpreted for the two-dimensional case, from a geometric perspective.
This explication should allow for a better understanding of the various item selection methods in multi-dimensional adaptive
tests (MAT) which are based on these two information measures. The KL information index (KI) method is then discussed and
two theorems are derived to quantify the relationship between KI and item parameters. Due to the fact that most of the existing
item selection algorithms for MAT bear severe computational complexity, which substantially lowers the applicability of MAT,
two versions of simplified KL index (SKI), built from the analytical results, are proposed to mimic the behavior of KI, while

This paper seeks to examine the plausibility of the concept of ‘Civic Friendship’ as a philosophical model for a conceptualisation
of ‘belonging’. Such a concept, would hold enormous interest for educators in enabling the identification of particular virtues,
attitudes and values that would need to be taught and nurtured to enable the civic relationship to be passed on from generation
to generation. I consider both of the standard arguments for civic friendship: that it can be understood within the Aristotelian
typology as either a form of utility friendship or as a form of virtue friendship. I argue that civic friendship may not be
the most appropriate model and that attempts to resolve the problems through looking on it as a political metaphor leave it
unable to fulfil the function for which it was originally designed in Ancient Greece. Finally, I emphasize the need to carefully
