Difficulties Experienced by Women in Prison

This article assembles data that identify some problems experienced by women incarcerated in prisons in the United States. Inequalities in occupational and educational programs offered in women's prisons in comparison with those offered in prisons for men are discussed. The impact of inadequate health and mental health services on the lives of these women is explored, and separation problems encountered by the woman prisoner and her family are examined. Some recommendations for change are suggested.     

Playingwith fire: art therapy in a prison setting

Art therapy's distinctive approach mediates between verbal and non-verbal, acting and thinking. All behaviour has meaning. As the criminal act is non-verbal, the art therapist has a unique way of engaging patients to find alternative ways of processing difficult feelings and impulses. This paper will focus on work at Holloway Prison and in particular the dynamics of arson to case material.     

ANXIETY, ALEXITHYMIA, AND DEPRESSION AS MEDIATORS OF THE ASSOCIATION BETWEEN CHILDHOOD ABUSE AND EATING DISORDERED BEHAVIOR IN AFRICAN AMERICAN AND EUROPEAN AMERICAN WOMEN

This study evaluated structural equation models of the associations among family functioning, childhood abuse, depression, anxiety, alexithymia, and eating disorder symptomatology in a sample of 412 European American and 192 African American female undergraduates. Additionally, the specific roles of anxiety, depression, and alexithymia as mediators were assessed. Each of these variables was a significant mediator of the association between childhood abuse and disordered eating. Finally, a test of invariance between the African American and European American subsamples was significant, highlighting the need for additional cross-cultural eating disorder research.
