The Changing Self: Using Personal Documents to Study Lives

ABSTRACT In this paper we describe a technique for coding expressions of preoccupation with aspects of the adult self in personal documents and retrospective autobiographical writings In particular we explore the value of this approach by analyzing themes of identity, intimacy, and generativity expressed in Vera Brittain's diary and correspondence, written during her adolescence in World War I, and in her retrospective autobiographical account of that period in her life Analyses aim to use Erikson's theory of personality development to describe her psychological experience at the time and to compare that account with the later one     

Initial response to rape: The impact of factors within the rape situation

The relationship between specific aspects of the rape situation and immediate post-rape measures of depression, fear, anxiety, and social and interpersonal functioning in 50 recent victims of sexual assault was examined. The data failed to reveal any significant relationships between rape situation variables (e.g., stranger vs. known assailant, weapon vs. no weapon) and the nature or severity of the victims' psychological response. It is emphasized that this negative finding contradicts previous and current clinical lore, and has a number of implications for the assessment and treatment of rape victims.This research was supported by a grant from the National Institute of Mental Health (MH#29692) to the first two authors.     

Tests of product and additive scaling axioms

A product axiom for ratio judgments and an additive axiom for difference judgments were tested for six Ss judging brightness. The product axiom was rejected for all six Ss whereas the additive axiom was accepted for two Ss. Power functions did not fit the data well, although somewhat better for difference judgments than ratio judgments. A two-stage model fitted somewhat better, but failed to satisfy one important implication of that model, previously confirmed for lifted weights. The data gave stronger support for a theory of brightness estimation based on an additive axiom for difference judgments than a product axiom based on ratio judgments.     

Comparison of sensitivity for the perception of bodily rotation and the oculogyral illusion

Two samples of 10 random polygons were scaled tactually and visually using multidimensional scaling techniques. Unidimensional solutions were very similar for both modalities and were linearly dependent upon the number of independent sides of the forms. Solutions of higher dimensionality did not produce clearly interpretable unique orderings of the forms beyond the first dimension with these samples. Within the limits imposed by these samples of forms. the data strongly support equivalence for visual and tactual form perception.     

Spatial effectiveness of the mask: Lateral inhibition in visual backward masking

Introducing a figure into a masking flash results in visual backward masking under conditions where a homogeneous masking flash does not suppress target detection. It is possible to analyze the spatial effects of such a masking figure in terms of lateral inhibition. It is hypothesized that incorporating a figure into the masking flash changes the inhibitory pattern the mask produces in the visual system. The interaction between the firing pattern produced by the mask and the residual inhibition from the preceding target presentation results in a phenomenal representation different from that produced by either the target or the mask alone.
