Prior research indicates that information‐based intergroup relations programs are only moderately successful (MGregor, 1993; Stephan & Stephan, 1984). In order to explore a means of increasing the effectiveness of techniques used to change attitudes toward out groups, the current study examined the effects of giving Anglo American students information about everyday incidents of discrimination against African Americans either with or without empathy‐inducing instructions. The results indicate that reading about discrimination against African Americans or inducing empathy reduces in‐group‐out‐group bias in attitudes toward African Americans vs. Anglo Americans. The implications of these findings for models of the effects of empathy on intergroup relations are discussed. 相似文献

This study tests effects of aural and visual cues on the validity of structured interviews. We recorded simulated job interviews with 40 managers from three utility companies on videotape. Supervisors provided performance ratings. Undergraduate research participants (N = 194) saw and heard the videotapes, heard them without the picture, or saw them without the sound and rated interviewees accordingly. Approximately 6 participants rated each interviewee in each condition of cue availability. Performance ratings and participants′ pooled ratings correlated .36 when they could hear and see the interviews, .33 when they could only hear the interviews, and .32 when they could only see the interviews. Interview ratings based on sight alone correlated .53 with interview ratings based on sound alone. One explanation is that aural cues, visual cues, and supervisory performance ratings all reflect true differences between interviewees in traits related to management effectiveness. Another is that interviewers and supervisors make the same mistakes when interpreting implications of aural cues and visual cues for management effectiveness. 相似文献

The severe acute respiratory syndrome coronavirus-2 (SARS-CoV-2) that has caused the coronavirus disease 2019 (COVID-19) pandemic represents the greatest international biopsychosocial emergency the world has faced for a century, and psychological science has an integral role to offer in helping societies recover. The aim of this paper is to set out the shorter- and longer-term priorities for research in psychological science that will (a) frame the breadth and scope of potential contributions from across the discipline; (b) enable researchers to focus their resources on gaps in knowledge; and (c) help funders and policymakers make informed decisions about future research priorities in order to best meet the needs of societies as they emerge from the acute phase of the pandemic. The research priorities were informed by an expert panel convened by the British Psychological Society that reflects the breadth of the discipline; a wider advisory panel with international input; and a survey of 539 psychological scientists conducted early in May 2020. The most pressing need is to research the negative biopsychosocial impacts of the COVID-19 pandemic to facilitate immediate and longer-term recovery, not only in relation to mental health, but also in relation to behaviour change and adherence, work, education, children and families, physical health and the brain, and social cohesion and connectedness. We call on psychological scientists to work collaboratively with other scientists and stakeholders, establish consortia, and develop innovative research methods while maintaining high-quality, open, and rigorous research standards. 相似文献

Even if people acknowledge that misinformation is incorrect after a correction has been presented, their feelings towards the source of the misinformation can remain unchanged. The current study investigated whether participants reduce their support of Republican and Democratic politicians when the prevalence of misinformation disseminated by the politicians appears to be high in comparison to the prevalence of their factual statements. We presented U.S. participants either with (1) equal numbers of false and factual statements from political candidates or (2) disproportionately more false than factual statements. Participants received fact-checks as to whether items were true or false, then rerated both their belief in the statements as well as their feelings towards the candidate. Results indicated that when corrected misinformation was presented alongside equal presentations of affirmed factual statements, participants reduced their belief in the misinformation but did not reduce their feelings towards the politician. However, if there was considerably more misinformation retracted than factual statements affirmed, feelings towards both Republican and Democratic figures were reduced—although the observed effect size was extremely small. 相似文献

Perceptions of injustice are likely to occur in intercultural relations because cultures often define justice and its implementation differently. This article reviews factors and processes that are unique to intercultural relations and that may give rise to feelings of injustice during intercultural interactions. Antecedents that can trigger a sense of injustice with regard to distributive, procedural, and retributive justice are reviewed. The consequences of perceived injustice are also analyzed. The reported birth of genetically modified twins in late 2018 has given new fuel to debates about the ethics of germline genome editing (GGE). There is a broad consensus among stakeholders that clinical uses of GGE should be temporarily banned as the technology is not yet deemed safe for use in humans. However, the idea of a complete ban is dismissed by many based on the expectation that more research will eventually allow scientists to make the technology safe without having to put humans at risk first. In this article, I will analyse this assumption and argue that it is undermined by recent developments in the postgenomic life sciences. In particular, I will argue that in a postgenomic view of germline editing a complete ban on specific uses of the technology is warranted, because the research needed to assess the safety of these interventions would not be morally defensible. 相似文献

This introduction to the special issue outlines key issues in research on inclusion—as the process of recognizing an individual’s needs for both belonging and distinctiveness. Whereas past research often focuses on diversity in relation to discrimination, this special issue attempts to offer a positive lens and asks how we can build inclusive societies. The answers range from emphasizing similarities based on multiple group memberships (intersectionality); creating inclusive workplaces by nurturing leadership that is authentic, respectful, creating belonging and valuing individuals’ unique contributions (ideas, skills, etc.); to developing bridging social capital as a means of cultural integration (vs. separation). The methodological approaches employed by the contributions in this special issue include an experimental vignette study, comparative studies of different ethnicities within a country and cross-culturally comparative work spanning multiple countries. A series of studies examine the maintenance of the relative phase of simultaneous cyclic limb movements by the manipulation of the planes of motion during isofrequency and multifrequency conditions. To evaluate predictions from a dynamic pattern approach in which differences in the limbs' uncoupled frequencies give way to competitive interactions when the limbs are moved simultaneously, Experiment 1 determined the preferred frequencies of single-limb movements during sagittal and transverse planes of motions. The results revealed that the plane in which the motion was produced significantly affected the cycle frequencies. In investigating isofrequency coordination, Experiment 2 showed that homologous limbs were more accurate in attaining the relative phasing when moving in one as compared to two separate planes, whereas no such effect was observed for non-homologous limbs. Furthermore, the planes of motion significantly influenced the variability of relative phasing such thattwo-plane motionswere less stable than one-plane motions.Experiment 3 examined the effect of the planes of motion upon multifrequency coordination and demonstrated that the homologous and homolateral limbs were less successful in producing the relative phasing when the motions were produced in one as compared to two planes, whereas this effect was not observed for the heterolateral limbs. These findings indicate that frequency detuning resulting from the planes manipulation affects the quality of phase-locking during isofrequency and multifrequency conditions, even though it may be assumed that additional neural constraints are involved in the interlimb coordination process. 相似文献

This article introduces the concept of ‘counterproductive sustainability behaviors’ (CSB) as a novel expression of counterproductive work behaviors (CWB). It presents a short measure of CSB that applies the construct of counterproductivity to employee behaviors in the environmental sustainability domain. Personality assessments were administered to three independent samples—employed students, experienced employees, and job applicants—to investigate the relationship between personality and CSB (self-reports and other-rated), and to compare results to those obtained in the prediction of traditional CWB. 相似文献
