A model previously proposed for the size-weight illusion (Cross & Rotkin, 1975) was found unsatisfactory because the postulated volume parameter was not independent of the unit of measurement of weight and the model yielded a paradoxical prediction that the perceived heaviness of small objects should decrease as their weight increased. A new model was proposed based on Stevens and Rubin’s (1970) finding that heaviness functions are a family of con-verging power functions and some of Cross and Rotkin’s developments. The model was ex-amined by estimating its parameters from data previously reported by Cross and Rotkin, Stevens and Rubin, and Kolehmainen and Mikkonen (1970). The equations was found to fit each set of data well. A study was conducted to investigate the effects on students' spelling achievement of variations in teacher assessment procedures. Teachers measured student spelling performance at a constant level of task difficulty using different measurement frequencies and different rules to interpret the data. Each teacher wrote two consecutive 3-week goals for improved spelling performance for two sets of 100 spelling words and then measured student performance either daily or weekly by dictating randomly selected words from each 100-word list. Teachers were trained to apply either a predetermined set of decision rules or their own judgment to the data to decide if the spelling program they had implemented for the student was effective. Ineffective programs were changed or modified. Results indicated that daily measurement was significantly more effective than weekly measurement in increasing spelling achievement and that, under certain conditions, decision rules were more effective than teacher judgment in determining when to make program changes or modifications.This research was conducted pursuant to Contract 300-77-0491 between the Bureau of Education for the Handicapped (now called Special Education Programs) and the University of Minnesota Institute for Research on Learning Disabilities.  相似文献

We have attempted to define the problem of child abuse by separating the abusers into two categories. Pattern abusers seem to be primarily a social issue in that the abuse is an outgrowth of the parental charge to control her/his child. However, another abuser is seen as a borderline or psychotic individual when the abuse is an outgrowth of a transferential distortion on the part of the parent. It was suggested that family therapy for the latter may be the preferential mode of intervention.  相似文献

The seven analysis-of-variance mean squares for an unreplicated three-way classification may be written as linear combinations of a mean variance and three mean covariances. Formulas are presented for computing the mean variances and mean covariances from linear combinations of mean squares. The relevance of these formulas for assessing rater biases and trait independence is discussed, a numerical example is provided, and proposed extensions are briefly noted.The research reported herein was performed pursuant to a contract with the United States Office of Education, Department of Health, Education, and Welfare. We sketch an initial version of a theory intended to account for the role of attention in the acquisition and expression of automaticity, and we test some initial predictions. The theory combines Logan's instance theory of automaticity and Bundesen's theory of visual attention, with Bundesen's theory determining what Logan's theory learns. We report four experiments that test the assumption that subjects learn what they report explicitly do not learn what they do not report explicitly. Throughout his distinguished career, Wolfhart Pannenberg has sought to show that the Christian understanding of God is crucial to the pursuit of knowledge. As the essays in Beginning with the End indicate, Pannenberg has attempted to construct a bridge between theology and science via the idea of contingency and the concept of field. His interest in dialogue, however, arises out of a deeper theological foundation, which views theology as a public discipline and sees the human quest for truth as the quest for God. Although susceptible to criticisms that all objectivist approaches at-tract, this focus on "reasonable faith" provides a helpful point of departure for dialogue.  相似文献
