According to system justification theory, people are motivated to preserve the belief that existing social arrangements are fair, legitimate, justifiable, and necessary. The strongest form of this hypothesis, which draws on the logic of cognitive dissonance theory, holds that people who are most disadvantaged by the status quo would have the greatest psychological need to reduce ideological dissonance and would therefore be most likely to support, defend, and justify existing social systems, authorities, and outcomes. Variations on this hypothesis were tested in five US national survey studies. We found that (a) low‐income respondents and African Americans were more likely than others to support limitations on the rights of citizens and media representatives to criticize the government; (b) low‐income Latinos were more likely to trust in US government officials and to believe that ‘the government is run for the benefit of all’ than were high‐income Latinos; (c) low‐income respondents were more likely than high‐income respondents to believe that large differences in pay are necessary to foster motivation and effort; (d) Southerners in the USA were more likely to endorse meritocratic belief systems than were Northerners and poor and Southern African Americans were more likely to subscribe to meritocratic ideologies than were African Americans who were more affluent and from the North; (e) low‐income respondents and African Americans were more likely than others to believe that economic inequality is legitimate and necessary; and (f) stronger endorsement of meritocratic ideology was associated with greater satisfaction with one's own economic situation. Taken together, these findings are consistent with the dissonance‐based argument that people who suffer the most from a given state of affairs are paradoxically the least likely to question, challenge, reject, or change it. The eye-movement-contingent display change technique has been used in a large number of studies to control the visibility of text when eye movements are monitored. Recently, the validity of the method has been questioned. O’Regan (1990) argued that technical imperfections in the implementation of the display change, rather than manipulation of visible text, account for some of the reported effects. This view was tested in the present study by manipulating characteristics of the display change and the linguistic task. Consistent with prior results, reading was hampered when eye-movement-contingent display changes were used to mask segments of text prior to their fixation. However, these costs were unrelated to the quality of the implemented display change and appear to have derived solely from the masking of useful text.  相似文献

How do representations of space inform our perception of time? In language, spatial vocabulary is frequently used to describe temporal concepts, and spatial information biases temporal perception even in non-verbal tasks. In contrast, temporal information typically exerts little, if any, influence on the perception of spatial extent. Here, we used spatial and temporal reproduction tasks, both with and without verbal and spatial dual tasks, to investigate the mechanism underlying the asymmetric relation between space and time. Specifically, we tested whether the asymmetric interference between spatial and temporal stimulus attributes arises from interference in verbal or visuospatial working memory. We found that loading visuospatial working memory, but not verbal working memory, eliminated the asymmetric pattern of interference. This suggests that the interference between spatial and temporal representations arises due to processing constraints in visuospatial working memory. These findings are discussed in terms of the load theory of attention and the relative automaticity with which spatial and temporal information is processed.  相似文献

According to Maslow’s (Psychol Rev 50:370–396, 1943) hierarchical theory of needs, people do not become sensitized to “higher” level needs until they have satisfied their “lower” level needs (a moderator hypothesis); until then, they are unprepared to benefit from higher-level satisfactions. But according to the self-determination theory (SDT) model, high-level psychological needs, when met, are non-contingently beneficial (a main effect-only hypothesis). In two large-N studies of Russian energy companies, we measured low-level need-satisfaction in terms of felt security and felt financial satisfaction, and measured high-level need satisfaction in terms of SDT’s basic needs of autonomy, competence, and relatedness. In both studies, both the lower level and higher level need-satisfaction sets had strong main effects upon many positive work outcomes, including intrinsic motivation, organizational commitment, and SWB. In Study 2, Maslow’s “prepared to benefit” hypothesis was supported, in that satisfaction of high-level needs had slightly larger effects on outcomes when combined with satisfaction of low-level needs. However this was not found in Study 1. Potentials for integrating the SDT and Maslow need theories are discussed.  相似文献
