Three neighbouring opaque surfaces may appear split into two layers, one transparent and one opaque beneath, if an outline contour is drawn that encompasses two of them. The phenomenon was originally observed by Kanizsa [1955 Rivista di Psicologia 69 3-19; 1979 Organization in Vision: Essays on Gestalt Psychology (New York: Praeger)], for the case where an outline contour is drawn to encompass one of the two parts of a bicoloured figure and a portion of a background of lightest (or darkest) luminance. Preliminary observations revealed that the outline contour yields different effects: in addition to the stratification into layers described by Kanizsa, a second split, opposite in depth order, may occur when the outline contour is close in luminance to one of the three surfaces. An initial experiment was designed to investigate what conditions give rise to the two phenomenal transparencies: this led to the conclusion that an outline contour superimposed on an opaque surface causes this surface to emerge as a transparent layer when the luminances of the contour and the surface differ, in absolute value, by no more than 13.2 cd m(-2). We have named this phenomenon 'transparency of the intercepted surface', to distinguish it from the phenomenal transparency arising when the contour and surface are very different in luminance. When such a difference exists, the contour acts as a factor of surface definition and grouping: the portion of the homogeneous surface it bounds emerges as a fourth surface and groups with a nearby surface if there is one close in luminance. The transparency phenomena ('transparency of the contoured surface') perceived in this context conform to the constraints of Metelli's model, as demonstrated by a second experiment, designed to gather 'opacity' ratings of stimuli. The observer judgments conformed to the values predicted by Metelli's formula for perceived degree of transparency, alpha. The role of the outline contour in conveying figural and intensity information is discussed. 相似文献

Burning Mouth Syndrome (BMS) presents high rates of comorbid Axis I disorders while no controlled studies have addressed the question of Axis II comorbidities. The aim of the present study was to examine DSM-IV (APA, 1994) Axis II comorbidity in BMS patients and to control for the specificity of this association. Seventy BMS patients were compared to a nonpsychiatric population sample and to patients with other Somatoform Disorders for the presence of personality disorders (assessed with the Structured Clinical Interview for DSM-IV Axis II Personality Disorders [SCID-II; First, Gibbon, Spitzer, & Williams, 1997). Prevalence rates were compared using the Pearson's chi square test. At least one personality disorder (PD) was found in 85.7%, 24.3%, and 88.6% of subjects in the three groups, respectively. When examining PD subgroups, significant differences emerged even between the BMS and the somatoform disorder group, with BMS patients showing more Cluster A and fewer Cluster B PDs. We compare the effects of psychoactive drugs such as morphine and amphetamine on the synaptic organization of neurons in the orbital frontal (OFC) and medial frontal (mPFC) regions in the rat. Both regions are altered chronically by exposure to intermittent doses of either drug but the effects are area-dependent. For example, whereas morphine produces increased spine density in OFC but decreased spine density in mPFC. The differential response of the OFC and mPFC to drugs is paralleled by an areal-dependent effect of gonadal hormones on these regions as well: males have greater dendritic arborization in the mPFC whereas females have a greater arborization in the OFC. We also compared the effects of neonatal injury to the OFC and mPFC on cognitive, motor, and social behaviors as well as on the anatomical organization of the remaining brain. Again, there were differential effects of the treatments to the OFC and mPFC. Neonatal OFC lesions allowed virtually complete functional recovery of cognitive and motor behaviors, which was correlated with mild abnormalities in cerebral development compared to the more severe deficits and morphological sequelae following mPFC lesions at the same ages. One exception was the effect of OFC on social behavior, which was severe regardless of whether the injury was in infancy or adulthood. It is proposed that both drug-induced and developmental abnormalities in the integrity of OFC neurons may lead to deficits in social behavior or other behavioral pathologies, possibly including depression. 相似文献

Twenty children with spina bifida and twenty controls were assessed on a battery of visuospatial working memory tests. Children with spina bifida performed as well as the control group in the visuospatial test and in the forward and backward versions of the Corsi test, but were impaired in the 'House Visual Span.' This test, designed in our lab, provides specific information regarding visual ability to discriminate between pictorial targets and lures, and requires specific visual processing of stimuli. When an edge can be perceived to continue either with a collinear edge of the opposite contrast polarity or with a noncollinear edge of the same contrast polarity, observers perceive an alignment between the edges of the same contrast polarity, even though they are noncollinear. Using several stimulus configurations and both free and tachistoscopic viewing, we studied the luminance and spatial factors affecting the perceived distortion and binding. The results showed that the two noncollinear edges tended to align when they had the same contrast polarity (Experiment 1A) and to misalign when they had opposite contrast polarity (Experiment 2), providing that (1) they were separated by a distance larger than 1 arcmin and smaller than 3-4 arcmin (for all configurations) and (2) they laterally overlapped for about 7 arcmin (Experiment 1B). The results also showed that the direction of apparent distortion depended on the direction of overlapping. The results of Experiment 3 ruled out the local attraction/repulsion explanation but, instead, supported the suggestion that the interaction concerned the global edges, or part of them, and produced an inward tilt, which made the edges of the same contrast polarity perceptually to align, or an outward tilt, so that the edges of opposite contrast polarity were perceived to be more misaligned. From the overlap and distance limits found, it can be inferred that for two noncollinear contours to join perceptually, the tilt must not exceed 18 degrees, a limit compatible with the orientation bandwidth of contrast-sensitive early cortical mechanisms. 相似文献

The study explored the luminance relations that determine the occurrence of achromatic transparency in phenomenal surfaces on complex backgrounds. Let the luminances of the left and right parts of a transparent surface on a bipartite background and those of the left and right parts of the bipartite background be p and q and m and n, respectively. Metelli proposed that this surface looks transparent when the rule p < q if m < n (or p > q if m > n) is satisfied, and Masin and Fukuda that it looks transparent when the inclusion rule is satisfied, that is, when p epsilon (m, q) or q epsilon (p, n). These rules also apply to achromatic checkerboards formed by one checkerboard enclosed in another checkerboard. This study shows that only the inclusion rule correctly predicted the occurrence of transparency in these checkerboards. 相似文献

Fuchs's transparency occurs when the contour of a transparent surface encloses the contour of another surface located on an underlying homogeneous background. The luminance conditions of Fuchs's transparency have not yet been determined. Six experiments were designed to study this problem with achromatic two-dimensional patterns. An ellipse enclosing a coplanar square was briefly presented. It simulated the cast of an elliptical spotlight or shadow on the square. The duration of the ellipse, the luminance of the square before the ellipse appeared, and the luminance of two squares outside the ellipse did not substantially affect the probability of perceiving the ellipse as transparent. However, this probability varied largely with the single values of the stimulus luminance differences and with the order relations of the stimulus luminances. It is concluded that this local and global luminance information conditioned the occurrence of Fuchs's transparency in two-dimensional patterns. 相似文献

A model of achromatic transparency based on the idea that neural representations of transparency are activated by proximal contours is described. It is proposed that the weighted average of the magnitudes of the representations of transparency relative to a perceived continuous transparent surface corresponds to the judgement of the overall degree of transparency of the same surface. Tests of this weighted-average model were carried out with bistable patterns formed by two overlapping surfaces that appeared opaque where they were superimposed on the background and transparent where they were superimposed on each other (partial transparency). In agreement with predictions from the weighted-average model, the rated degrees of transparency of these two surfaces were noncomplementary and independent of background reflectance. Two experiments confirmed the contention of this model that the relevant proximal contours for the judgement of partial transparency of the two overlapping transparent surfaces in a bistable pattern correspond to the part where these surfaces are superimposed. 相似文献
