Abstract. This paper explores the use of Peter Berger's theory of religion and its features of alienation and dealienation to lead students to the critical awareness of the role that human beings play in the construction of social worlds, including most especially our religious worlds. After summarizing Berger's theory of the alienating and potentially dealienating capacity of religion, the paper describes how the author used the study of certain biblical texts, the Wisdom of Solomon and the pericope of the controversy over clean and unclean foods, as presented in both Matthew and Mark, to explore both the alienating and dealienating aspects of religion as presented in these selected biblical texts. The paper also describes how the author encouraged students to embrace as the most responsible stance a dealienating stance toward religion, especially one's own. 相似文献

Understanding Choice Behaviours: Pathways from School to University with Changing Aspirations and Opportunities 总被引:1,自引:1,他引:0
A socio-ecological approach to explain choice behaviour highlights salient personal and social factors in the context of changing
aspirations and opportunities. The population databases are five cohorts of all school leaver applicants for university places
in a state of Australia and a survey for one cohort. Results highlight common behaviour patterns across cohorts, with diverse
outcomes for specific social groups. Offers of university places relate course preferences and school achievement. In addition,
decisions to apply, accept and enrol vary with social experience by socio-economic indicators, geographic location and school
type. Student explanations for their decisions to defer or let the offer lapse entail particular social factors as well as
personal factors of self concepts, interests and financial needs. Findings contribute to a better understanding of choice
behaviour, with a general model of the personal and social factors that explain diverse pathways to higher education. 相似文献

The burgeoning world-wide consumer culture brings with it certain baggage. Materialistic attitudes and compulsive buying have
both been linked to lower levels of subjective well-being in consumers. Additionally, time is becoming an increasingly precious
commodity as denizens of the consumer culture increase their work load and activities in an attempt to fully achieve the happiness
promised by a lifestyle of consumption. The purpose of the present research is to investigate whether the negative impact
of materialism and compulsive buying on well-being is moderated by a person’s perceived time affluence (the time one perceives
he/she has available for life’s many activities). Using a large sample of adolescents (n = 1,329), the present study finds that (1) materialism and compulsive buying negatively impact subjective well-being, and
that (2) time affluence moderates the relationship between materialism and compulsive buying and well-being. Specifically,
perceptions of time affluence were found to negate the negative relationship between both materialism and SWB and compulsive
buying and SWB. And (3), the present research appears to have uncovered a “sweet spot” when it comes to the influence of time
affluence on the above relationships. Too little or too much time affluence was found to be associated with lower well-being.
A simple slope analysis suggests that moderate levels of time affluence are most conducive to our well-being as consumers.
In addition to discussing these findings, the authors also note certain limitations and offer directions for future research. 相似文献

Previous research has consistently found that spontaneous analogical transfer is strongly tied to concrete and contextual similarities between the cases. However, that work has largely failed to acknowledge that the relevant factor in transfer is the similarity between individuals' mental representations of the situations rather than the overt similarities between the cases themselves. Across several studies, we found that participants were able to transfer strategies learned from a perceptually concrete simulation of a physical system to a task with very dissimilar content and appearance. This transfer was reflected in better performance on the transfer task when its underlying dynamics were consistent rather than inconsistent with the preceding training task. Our data indicate that transfer in these tasks relies on the perceptual and spatial nature of the training task but does not depend on direct interaction with the system, with participants performing equally well after simply observing the concrete simulation. We argue that participants generated a spatial, dynamic, and force-based mental model while interacting with the training simulation and tended to spontaneously interpret the transfer task according to this primed model. Unexpectedly, our data consistently show that transfer was independent of reported recognition of the analogy between tasks: Although such recognition was associated with better overall performance, it was not associated with better transfer (in terms of applying an appropriate strategy). Together, these findings suggest that analogical transfer between overtly dissimilar cases may be much more common--and much more relevant to our cognitive processing--than is generally assumed. 相似文献

With the present data, we explored the relations between the language of interviewer questions, children's reports, and case and child characteristics in forensic interviews. Results clearly indicated that the type of questions posed by interviewers—either probing generic or episodic features of an event—was related to the specificity of information reported by children. Further, interviewers appeared to adjust their questioning strategies based on the frequency of the alleged abuse. Children alleging single instances of abuse were asked more episodic questions than those alleging multiple abuses. In contrast, children alleging multiple incidents of abuse were asked a greater proportion of generic questions. Given that investigators often seek forensically relevant episodic information, it is recommended that training for investigators focus on recognition of prompt selection tendencies and developing strategies for posing non‐suggestive, episodically focused questions. Shestov’s work can be summed up under six headings. Three are sharp contrasts, three are paradoxes. (1) First there is the
contrast between Shestov the person, who was moderate, competent, and calm, and Shestov the thinker, who was extreme, incandescent,
and impassioned. (2) Then there is the contrast between his critique of reason, his acceptance of irrationalism, and the means by which he attacks the former and defends the latter: namely, careful rational argument. Sometimes he argues like a lawyer
(after all, he had a law degree from Moscow University). (3) Shestov speaks repeatedly of the “horrors and atrocities of human
existence.” But his examples are always drawn from history or literature, never from his own life, although we know that he
experienced much horror. (4) Nietzsche is the thinker whom he invokes most frequently, and most warmly. Yet, paradoxically,
Shestov completely ignores most of Nietzsche’s central themes. (5) Shestov’s skeptical doubts are mostly directed at rationalism;
he is not skeptical about the existence or benevolence of God. Yet he is explicitly skeptical about divine omniscience and
implicitly skeptical about divine omnipotence in a metaphysical sense, though not in its ethical application. (6) Shestov
has a deep faith that God can undo all the horrors of life, putting an end to all suffering. At the same time he knows that this will not, and cannot, happen, since the very idea of undoing the past, erasing its horrors, is conceptually incoherent. 相似文献

Americans' opposition toward building an Islamic community center at Ground Zero has been attributed solely to a general anti-Muslim sentiment. We hypothesized that some Americans' negative reaction was also due to their motivation to symbolically pursue a positive U.S. group identity, which had suffered from a concurrent economic and political downturn. Indeed, when participants perceived that the United States was suffering from lowered international status, those who identified strongly with the country, as evidenced especially by a high respect or deference for group symbols, reported a stronger opposition to the "Ground Zero mosque" than participants who identified weakly with the country did. Furthermore, participants who identified strongly with the country also showed a greater preference for buildings that were symbolically congruent than for buildings that were symbolically incongruent with the significance of Ground Zero, and they represented Ground Zero with a larger symbolic size. These findings suggest that identifying group members' underlying motivations provides unusual insights for understanding intergroup conflict. 相似文献
