It is difficult to detect deception. Studies suggest it is little, ifany, better than chance. But some guidance is available. This study examinedpersonality traits, in particular self-consciousness in public and abilityto control behaviour. The effects can be observed in hand movements. We propose that word recognition in continuous speech is subject to constraints on what may constitute a viable word of the language. This Possible-Word Constraint (PWC) reduces activation of candidate words if their recognition would imply word status for adjacent input which could not be a word - for instance, a single consonant. In two word-spotting experiments, listeners found it much harder to detectapple,for example, infapple(where [f] alone would be an impossible word), than invuffapple(wherevuffcould be a word of English). We demonstrate that the PWC can readily be implemented in a competition-based model of continuous speech recognition, as a constraint on the process of competition between candidate words; where a stretch of speech between a candidate word and a (known or likely) word boundary is not a possible word, activation of the candidate word is reduced. This implementation accurately simulates both the present results and data from a range of earlier studies of speech segmentation.  相似文献

A transactional model of career aspirations is presented. Selected variables from the model were measured with a postal questionnaire completed by 346 new entrants into a stratified occupational system. Factors found to be strongly related to initial career aspiration levels included sex and educational qualifications. The time adult Ss were allowed to explore stimuli was varied during intra- and cross-model equivalence matching involving vision and touch. Increasing time to explore either each standard, each comparison, or both standard and comparison from 4 to 16 sec significantly improved haptic intramodel matching. However, cross-modal matching, from either vision to touch or touch to vision, improved significantly only when time to explore each standard was increased. Videotape recordings of Ss’ hand movements revealed use of a greater variety of haptic scanning strategies by Ss in groups where increased exploration time enhanced accuracy. The difference in effects of exploration time on intra- compared to cross-model shape matching was discussed in terms of possible differences in requirements between the two tasks.  相似文献

This study looks at some effects of five different styles of women's clothing: Formal Skirt, Formal Pants, Casual Skirt, Casual Pants, and Jeans. There were no significant differences in compliance to a request to fill out a questionnaire made by experimenters dressed in the five clothing styles, although experimenter age and sex effects were found. Ratings of photographs of the five dress styles indicate that a model was viewed by both male and female subjects as most happy, successful, feminine, interesting, attractive, intelligent, and wanted as a friend when wearing a Formal Skirt outfit and as least so when wearing Jeans. She was also seen as more active when wearing pants as compared with a skirt. Subjects' reasons for choosing what clothing to wear did not indicate that how one will appear to others is the major factor in clothing selection. It appears that clothing does communicate something about the wearer but may influence behavior toward her primarily in the absence of other information about her status.  相似文献

An attempt was made to distinguish between the dual-access and the activation and synthesis models of word identification. Word regularity and consistency were factorially manipulated. In two experiments lexical decisions were required, and in two the task was word naming. Within each task, comparisons were made of the effects achieved by manipulating the degree to which subjects were free to rely on a phonological, rather than a visual, stimulus code. The results suggested that lexical access generally involves the activation of lexical entries that are visually similar to the target, but that subjects do favor a phonological code when the task requires the naming of words only. The data were interpreted as requiring a model incorporating elements of both the dual-access and the activation and synthesis frameworks.  相似文献

One hundred-seventy-three mental health centers responded to a survey inquiring about allocation of staff time for mental health services and about the availability of an array of services at present, 3 years previous, and 3 years hence. The data reflect an emphasis upon reactive services as opposed to those considered proactive, and on services directed to individuals as opposed to other groups. However, this emphasis seems to be changing. Future projections call for a de-emphasis on individual reactive programs and increased emphasis on programs directed toward families and small groups, and toward proactive programs directed to the communities-at-large. Data about specific programs and services further suggest de-emphasis of services that involve the mental health professional and the client in direct interaction, and continued growth in services that can be delivered by less formally trained mental health workers or volunteers.  相似文献

Like many other professions, careers guidance is currently undergoing rapid and radical change. But the Careers Service is still operating to nationally agreed 'core training objectives' which determine both initial training (Diploma in Careers Guidance Part I) and supervisory training (Diploma in Careers Guidance Part II). Recent changes influencing guidance practice and training are outlined, and the predominant mode of current supervision within the Careers Service is identified as 'managerial' in character. This is explained in terms of both the historical development of the service and its funding mechanisms. A model for supervisory practice for the future is presented, identifying three essential elements: organisational commitment, contractual agreement and an explicit framework.  相似文献

New arrangements for funding higher education institutions promise to introduce sharper management styles. Such institutions can anticipate that much closer scrutiny will be given to the details of their activities, with value for money becoming a more prominent factor. The development of performance indicators offers management a way of evaluating effectiveness and efficiency. It may be difficult to develop valid performance indicators for many aspects of higher education, but perhaps those difficulties will be greatest in relation to services whose activities are essentially private and as such hidden. An approach to the development of performance indicators is presented which could be effective in relation to counselling services in higher education institutions.  相似文献
