Although observational learning by children may occur through imitating a modeler's actions, it can also occur through learning about an object's dynamic affordances--a process that M. Tomasello (1996) calls "emulation." The relative contributions of imitation and emulation within observational learning were examined in a study with 14- to 26-month-old children. The effectiveness of a "ghost" condition, in which the effective operation of the means apparatus was seen to occur without human agency, was compared with that of a standard modeling procedure in which the child saw an experimenter demonstrate the means action. The ghost condition was as likely to encourage observational learning as was the modeling condition; indeed, performance in the ghost condition was significantly better. The role of emulation in the development of observational learning is discussed in the context of a possible form of goal directedness without agency. 相似文献

Experiments 1 and 2 delivered conditioned stimuli (CSs) at random times and unconditioned stimuli (USs) at either fixed (Experiment 1) or random (Experiment 2) intervals. In Experiment 3, CS duration was manipulated, and US deliveries occurred at random during the background. In all 3 experiments, the mean rate of responding (head entries into the food cup) in the background was determined by the mean US-US interval, and the mean rate during the CS was a linear combination of responding controlled by the mean US-US and mean CS onset-US intervals; the pattern of responding in time was determined by the interval distribution form (fixed or random). Large and reliable laterality effects have been found using a dichotic target detection task in a recent experiment using word stimuli pronounced with an emotional component. The present study tested the hypothesis that the magnitude and reliability of the laterality effects would increase with the removal of the emotional component and variations in word frequency. Thirty-two participants completed both a dichotic syllable detection task and a dichotic word detection task. In both tasks, stimuli were pronounced in a neutral tone of voice. Each task was completed twice to allow the estimation of test-retest reliability. Results failed to confirm the hypothesis since they were generally similar to those obtained in the previous study. A significant right ear advantage (REA) was found only with the word task. Although no ear advantage was found for the syllable task, somewhat better reliability was demonstrated compared to that obtained with words. The present findings suggest that including an emotional component does not reduce the reliability or magnitude of auditory laterality effects. In fact, the emotional component may have forced participants to focus on the language aspects of the stimuli. This might partly account for the reduced reliability in words and the absence of REA in syllables. Motivational factors inherent to the within-subject design used here are also discussed. 相似文献

Opiates are used clinically as analgesics, but their euphoric actions can lead to continued use and to dependence and addiction. While there are many factors involved in drug abuse, avoidance of stressful withdrawal symptoms is a key feature of addiction and its treatment. Fundamental to this is the need to understand the cellular processes that induce dependence and lead to the withdrawal syndrome. Many neurones in the brain express opioid receptors but only a few types of neurone develop dependence during chronic morphine exposure. The physiology of opiate-dependent cells is altered such that they require the continued presence of the drug to function normally and this is revealed, in cells that are inhibited by initial acute exposure to opiate, by a rebound hyperexcitation upon opiate withdrawal. Hypothalamic oxytocin neurones robustly develop morphine dependence and provide an exceptional opportunity to probe the cellular mechanisms underlying morphine dependence and withdrawal excitation. Although expression of morphine withdrawal excitation by oxytocin cells requires afferent inputs, the underlying mechanisms appear to reside within the oxytocin neurones themselves and probably involve changes in the intrinsic membrane properties of these neurones. 相似文献

Observers are remarkably consistent in attributing particular emotions to particular facial expressions, at least in Western societies. Here, we suggest that this consistency is an instance of the fundamental attribution error. We therefore hypothesized that a small variation in the procedure of the recognition study, which emphasizes situational information, would change the participants' attributions. In two studies, participants were asked to judge whether a prototypical "emotional facial expression" was more plausibly associated with a social-communicative situation (one involving communication to another person) or with an equally emotional but nonsocial, situation. Participants were found more likely to associate each facial display with the social than with the nonsocial situation. This result was found across all emotions presented (happiness, fear, disgust, anger, and sadness) and for both Spanish and Canadian participants. 相似文献

Verbal declarative memory is one of the most reliably impaired cognitive functions in schizophrenia. Important issues are whether the problem is reversible, and which brain regions underlie improvement. We showed previously that glucose administration improved declarative memory in patients with schizophrenia, and sought in this pilot study to identify whether glucose affects the location or degree of activation of brain regions involved in a verbal encoding task. Seven clinically stable and medicated patients with schizophrenia or schizoaffective disorder, who showed deficits on a clinical test of memory, participated in the study. Subjects served as their own controls in a double-blind, crossover protocol that consisted of two sessions about a week apart. In each session, subjects ingested a beverage flavored with lemonade that contained 50 g of glucose on one occasion, and saccharin on the other. Blood glucose was measured before and 15, 50, and 75 min after ingestion. After ingesting the beverage, they performed a verbal encoding task while undergoing brain functional magnetic resonance imaging. The results showed significantly greater activation of the left parahippocampus during novel sentence encoding in the glucose condition, compared to the saccharin condition, despite no change in memory performance. A trend towards greater activation of the left dorsolateral prefrontal cortex (p<.07) was also evident in the glucose condition. These pilot findings emphasize the sensitivity of both the medial temporal and prefrontal regions to effects of glucose administration during encoding, and are consistent with the hypothesis that these regions also participate in declarative memory improvements following glucose administration. 相似文献

We explore the neurobiological bases of attention deficit hyperactivity disorder (ADHD) from the viewpoint of the neurochemistry and psychopharmacology of the catecholamine-based behavioural systems. The contributions of dopamine (DA) and noradrenaline (NA) neurotransmission to the motor and cognitive symptoms of ADHD (e.g. hyperactivity, variable and impulsive responses) are studied in rodent and primate models. These models represent elements of the behavioural units observed in subjects with ADHD clinically, or in laboratory settings (e.g. locomotion, changed sensitivity/responsivity to novelty/reinforcement and measures of executive processing). In particular, the models selected emphasize traits that are strongly influenced by mesocorticolimbic DA in the spontaneously hypertensive (SHR) and the Naples high excitability (NHE) rat lines. In this context, the mode of action of methylphenidate treatment is discussed. We also describe current views on the altered control by mesolimbic catecholamines of appropriate and inappropriate goal-directed behaviour, and the tolerance or intolerance of delayed reinforcement in ADHD children and animal models. Recent insights into the previously underestimated role of the NA system in the control of mesocortical DA function, and the frontal role in processing information are elaborated. 相似文献

Using organizational justice as a guiding framework, the authors studied perceptions of affirmative action programs by presumed beneficiaries. Three conceptual issues were addressed: (a) the content of different affirmative action plans; (b) the 3-way interaction among distributive, procedural, and interactional justice; and (c) the distinction between outcome favorability and distributive justice. These ideas were tested with a sample of Black engineering students who responded to 1 of 6 plans. Participants distinguished among the various plans, with some policies being viewed as more fair than others. In addition, a 3-way interaction among the 3 types of organizational justice was observed. Specifically, the 2-way interaction between distributive and interactional fairness was only significant when procedural justice was low. Implications for organizational justice and for the design of affirmative action programs are discussed. 相似文献
