The present study describes a developmental performance measure of hand preference that considers task complexity and position in hemispace. Eighty right-handed children and adults (ages 3-4, 6-7, 9-10, 18-24) were observed for hand selection responses to 2 unimanual tasks (simple vs complex) across positions in hemispace. Results revealed an age-related trend in the tendency to use the preferred hand in right and left hemispace. While the adult's and 3- to 4-year-old's preferred hand use decreased as they moved into left hemispace, children between the ages of 6 and 10 years tended to use their preferred hands consistently throughout both regions of hemispace. The relationship between hand preference and skilled, cost-efficient performance throughout development are discussed.  相似文献

Twenty-nine right-handed participants made unimanual movements to 5 target locations while standing and while balancing on a rocker platform. Manual preference was affected by target location (p < .001; manual preference tended to be concordant with target hemispace) and posture (p < .05; responses from the rocker platform were associated with a lower level of right-hand responding). A location by posture interaction (p < .05) indicated that the effect of posture was present only for targets in left hemispace; the right hand was used less frequently in the rocker condition than simple standing. Manual preference is viewed as a process of response selection motivated by an effort to minimize neural processing and mechanical costs.  相似文献

The present paper describes a performance method for determining hand preference. The task requires participants to reach into different regions of hemispace to perform various actions (point, pick up, toss, sweep, and position) with a dowel located at each position. In accordance with the participants' hand preference as measured by the Waterloo Handedness Questionnaire, the preferred hand was used more frequently on the various performance tasks. The distribution of hand use in working space indicates that preferred hand use was almost exclusive for actions carried out in ipsilateral hemispace, while it is used only moderately for actions in contralateral hemispace, revealing that this hand is used throughout a wider range of extrapersonal space than the nonpreferred hand. These trends were observed across all of the performance tasks, suggesting that task complexity did not affect the frequency of preferred hand use either overall or, more specifically, in right hemispace, as was predicted. This finding is inconsistent with empirical work on questionnaires indicating that verbal reports of preferred hand use increase for more complex tasks (e.g., Steenhuis & Bryden, 1988). As well, performance on the preferential reaching task correlated significantly with hand preference as measured on the Waterloo Handedness Questionnaire (Bryden, 1977), unlike the other performance measure examined, indicating that the preferential reaching task is sensitive to differences in the degree of hand preference.  相似文献

The Green and Mitchell (1979) model of the process by which supervisors diagnose and deal with the causes of subordinates' poor performance is based upon attribution theory. The notion is that the supervisor makes an attribution about the cause of the poor performance and then selects an appropriate response or solution to deal with the problem. Two ways in which this can lead to an inapprorpriate solution are, first, a bias toward making internal attributions and, second, an aversion to using costly, even though appropriate, solutions. This study demonstrates that it is possible to prompt participants to make more external attribution about poor performance. It also demonstrates that whichever attributions they make (either internal or external), the solutions they select to deal with the poor performance are congruent with their attributions provided that the solutions do not have explicit implementation costs associated with them. However, when implementation costs are made explicit, costs influence solution selection and reduce the congruence between the attributions and the selected solutions. The possible implications of this finding for success in dealing with poor performance are discussed.  相似文献

In order to outline a model of identity crisis, it is necessary to distinguish two types. In an identity deficit ("motivation crisis"), the individual experiences a lack of guiding commitments but struggles to establish personal goals and values. In an identity conflict ("legitimation crisis"), the person has several commitments which prescribe conflicting behavioral imperatives in some situations, such that at least one commitment may have to be betrayed. The literature on identity crisis is reviewed in connection with this distinction, and an attempt is made to delineate the causes, the subjective experiences, behavioral consequences, and modes of resolution of each type of crisis.  相似文献

The purpose of this study was to examine the effects of union performance on union loyalty. The moderator effect of perceived steward support was also investigated. Data were collected in 1988 and 1989 in two locals of a national tire and rubber manufacturing company. Parallel multiple regression analyses were conducted for the two samples. In both samples, the results support the hypothesized positive relationship between union performance and union loyalty but the interaction between union performance and steward support was not significant. However, there was a significant positive relationship between steward support and union loyalty in each sample. Additional research on the roles of the steward may clarify member assessment of the union.  相似文献

Logical Luck     
Is guilt always part of the pain of contradiction? If I equivocate, is it always my fault? These issues about blame in logic (and perhaps the logic of blame) bear on central issues in philosophy of mind and language. One focus is the distinction between ignorance and incoherence drawn by Saul Kripke in his Pierre puzzle. The second focus is the challenge to privileged access mounted by Hilary Putnam in his twin earth 'thought-experiment'. I shall argue that some logical misdeeds are unavoidable. Often this lack of control excuses the misdeed. But not always – for reasons presaged by Bernard Williams in his discussion of moral luck.  相似文献
