To explore differences in concepts about development, mothers in two cultural groups were interviewed to determine: (a) their developmental timetables (the ages at which they expected various skills to appear); (b) the extent to which they taught various skills before school; and (c) the extent to which they perceived several qualities, once established, as stable over time. Variables were the child's gender, the child's birth order (first or not first to begin school), and the mother's ethnic background (Australian-born or Lebanese-born). Gender and birth order showed minimal effects; ethnicity had a strong effect in areas (a) and (b) but not (c). The results bring out the content of mothers' ideas, raise questions about factors affecting this content, and point to some aspects of mothers' ideas as inter-related.  相似文献

The modifiability of older adults' performance on Induction tasks was examined through cognitive training. The posttraining performance of 52 older adults (X age = 70.3 years) was assessed with regard to a transfer-of-training paradigm and maintenance of training effects at three posttests (one week, one month, six months). A pattern of differential training transfer across the posttest battery of fluid and crystallized intelligence measures was predicted, with the largest training effects expected for near transfer (Induction) measures. The predicted pattern of training transfer was obtained at one-week and one-month posttests, with significant training effects to the nearest Induction measure. Large retest (practice) effects across posttests also occurred for training and control groups. This research contributes to the position that modifiability of intellectual performance through cognitive intervention extends across the adult life span.  相似文献

Simulated evaluation report abstracts were used to determine whether factors previously identified as enhancing utilization of evaluation findings by policy level decisionmakers and agency directors also enhance utilization by direct service staff. Respondents were 238 direct service staff members in mental health agencies. Dependent variables were perceived usefulness and perceived truthfulness. The predictor variables were relevance of the evaluation, staff participation, quality of research design and specificity of recommendations. All predictor variables except the last were significant but relevance explained almost all the variance. The two dependent variables were highly correlated and virtually could not be distinguished from each other. Rosemary Holland is currently working as a private consultant to mental health agencies for program development and program evaluation. She has extensive experience in the administration and planning of mental health services. Dr. Holland's primary interest is in user-initiated evaluations. Listeners, whose right ears were blocked, located low-intensity sounds originating from loudspeakers placed 15 deg apart along the horizontal plane on the side of the open, or functioning, ear. In Experiment 1, the stimuli consisted of noise bursts, 1.0 kHz wide and centered at 4.0 through 14.0 kHz in steps of .5 kHz. We found that the apparent location of the noise bursts was governed by their frequency composition. Specifically, as the center frequency was increased from 4.0 to about 8.0 kHz, the sound appeared to move away from the frontal sector and toward the side. This migration pattern of the apparent sound source was observed again when the center frequency was increased from 8.0 to about 12.0 kHz. Then, with center frequencies of 13.0 and 14.0 kHz, the sound appeared once more in front. We referred to this relation between frequency composition and apparent location in terms of spatial referent maps. In Experiment 2, we showed that localization was more proficient if the frequency content of the stimulus served to connect adjacent spatial referent maps rather than falling within a single map. By these means, we have further elucidated the spectral cues utilized in monaural localization of sound in the horizontal plane.  相似文献

The hypothesis that Attention-Deficit/Hyperactivity Disorder (ADHD) reflects a primary inhibitory executive function deficit has spurred a substantial literature. However, empirical findings and methodological issues challenge the etiologic primacy of inhibitory and executive deficits in ADHD. Based on accumulating evidence of increased intra-individual variability in ADHD, we reconsider executive dysfunction in light of distinctions between 'hot' and 'cool' executive function measures. We propose an integrative model that incorporates new neuroanatomical findings and emphasizes the interactions between parallel processing pathways as potential loci for dysfunction. Such a reconceptualization provides a means to transcend the limits of current models of executive dysfunction in ADHD and suggests a plan for future research on cognition grounded in neurophysiological and developmental considerations.  相似文献

A narrative approach was used to explore whether women perceive their later years as a time of loss, stability, or gain, and the explanations they give for their perceptions. Life review interviews were held with 20 married or previously married mothers aged 60–65 living in lower-income suburbs of Sydney, Australia. Participants were asked to consider their life story as a book, to divide the book into chapters, and to entitle each chapter. Two types of gain narrative accounted for 70% of the stories: one (breakouts) described gains that resulted from the womans own actions, and the other (stress relief) described gains from role changes and the passage of time. A further 20% described continuing contentment with their lives, and 10% of the accounts described later life in terms of losses. The findings suggest that one reason for the later life satisfaction regularly found by surveys of older adults may be the disappearance or diminishment of previous life stressors. As part of a planned cohort comparison, similar interviews were held with women aged 50–55 and 40–45. An additional category of ongoing stress was required to accommodate their narratives.  相似文献

Using cross-sectional data from N = 4274 young adults across 16 countries during the COVID-19 pandemic, we examined the cross-cultural measurement invariance of the perceived vulnerability to disease (PVD) scale and tested the hypothesis that the association between PVD and fear of COVID-19 is stronger under high disease threat [that is, absence of COVID-19 vaccination, living in a country with lower Human Development Index (HDI) or higher COVID-19 mortality]. Results supported a bi-factor Exploratory Structural Equation Modeling model where items loaded on a global PVD factor, and on the sub-factors of Perceived Infectability and Germ Aversion. However, cross-national invariance could only be obtained on the configural level with a reduced version of the PVD scale (PVD-r), suggesting that the concept of PVD may vary across nations. Moreover, higher PVD-r was consistently associated with greater fear of COVID-19 across all levels of disease threat, but this association was especially pronounced among individuals with a COVID-19 vaccine, and in contexts where COVID-19 mortality was high. The present research brought clarity into the dimensionality of the PVD measure, discussed its suitability and limitations for cross-cultural research, and highlighted the pandemic-related conditions under which higher PVD is most likely to go along with psychologically maladaptive outcomes, such as fear of COVID-19.  相似文献
