This article examines synagogue building and synagogue architecture in Amsterdam during the second half of the nineteenth century. The Dutch capital, known in local parlance as “Mokum,” took a very different path than other European capitals. While Jewish communities across Europe initiated massive building plans, the Amsterdam Jewish community reverted to building small and modest hevra synagogues (independent prayer group synagogues) and refrained from constructing a monumental house of worship. There are multiple reasons why this happened: among others, the persistent poverty among the large working class population, the small Jewish elite, a communal priority given to providing poor relief rather than initiating new building programs, the presence of two large seventeenth-century synagogues in the center of the Jewish neighborhood, and a general disinterest in creating an “architecture of emancipation.” This article presents an analysis of the Dutch case and places it within the larger context of European synagogue architecture. It also takes a close look at the Gerard Dou synagogue which was inaugurated in 1892, a hevra synagogue built in the Dutch neo-Renaissance style.  相似文献

Using a school-based sample of Washington, DC, fifth graders (mean age 10.38, SD = 0.66) and their parents (N = 408), we examined associations of pubertal development with early adolescents' sexual and nonsexual risk behaviors and their caregivers' parenting behaviors; and of these risk behaviors with parenting behaviors. Youths reporting signs of pubertal development were more likely to engage in these risk behaviors than students reporting no signs. Pubertal development was not related to parenting behaviors; however, parents of youths who reported multiple nonsexual risk behaviors reported more parent-child communication about sexual topics. These results highlight the need to begin risk prevention efforts early, prior to pubertal development. Research is needed to understand how parents can help youths better cope with pubertal development to avoid involvement in sexual and nonsexual risk behaviors.  相似文献

ABSTRACT

Multiple child welfare systems and agencies have embraced efforts to become more trauma-informed in recent years. However, the field of trauma-informed care is still somewhat in its infancy and only recently has the focus shifted from theoretical concepts into concrete practices that can be identified, measured, evaluated, and sustained over time. One of the key resources designed to help support the development of a trauma-informed child welfare system is the Child Welfare Trauma Training Toolkit (CWTTT). The CWTTT was developed in 2008 as a collaborative process that included members of the Child Welfare Committee of the National Child Traumatic Stress Network (NCTSN). Originally, the CWTTT was developed as a training resource to support child welfare professionals in increasing their understanding regarding trauma and its impact on children. Over time, the CWTTT has undergone multiple iterations and has been involved in numerous state and county initiatives to support their efforts in becoming more trauma-informed. This article will provide historical context on the development of the CWTTT, detailing its evolution since 2007, followed by highlighting the current efforts and future directions of the CWTTT.  相似文献
