A psychophysical matching procedure was used to measure the effect of a conditioning stimulus on the vibrotactile sensation magnitude of a test stimulus. When both stimuli were applied to the thenar eminence of the same hand, the conditioning stimulus enhanced the sensation magnitude of the test stimulus. Enhancement was also observed when the test stimulus was on the thenar eminence and the conditioning stimulus was either on the contralateral thenar eminence, the ipsilateral middle finger, or the contralateral middle finger. When the conditioning and test stimuli were applied to separate sites, enhancement was maximal when At between the stimuli was 150 msec. At Ate less than 100 msec, suppression was observed. Enhancement and suppression were observed only when the frequencies of the two stimuli were within the same vibrotactile information processing channel.  相似文献

Four experiments were conducted to replicate and extend the findings by Shuell and Keppel (1970) as well as others, that when properly equated for original learning, “fast” and “slow” learners have parallel forgetting curves. In Experiments I and II, the Shuell-Keppel findings, originally demonstrated on American students learning lists of words, were replicated on samples of Nigerian students. In Experiments III and IV, Nigerian and American students, respectively, learned poems to a criterion of 75–90% correct and were tested for retention. In all studies, “fast” and “slow” learners were brought to a similar learning criterion, with the result that their forgetting curves were parallel.  相似文献

An analogue setting for assessing dental fear involving a videotaped simulated dental operation was evaluated in terms of its capability of eliciting differential physiological arousal (Palmer Sweat Index) between high- and low-fear subjects, identified by self-reports of dental fear. Results showed high-fear subjects to exhibit significantly greater palmar sweating than did low-fear subjects, females to respond more than males, and a differential response across groups at different points during the simulated operation. High-fear subjects also gave verbal reports of greater physiological arousal and general anxiety while viewing the operation than did low-fear subjects.  相似文献

Recently, cognitive personality researchers have begun to explore the social and interpersonal relevance of cognitive individual difference variables. Embedded in these examinations, however, is a methodological issue that bears importantly on our understanding of the role of these cognitive orientations in social relations. Specifically, personality studies have typically employed experimentally created dyads which, by limiting the representativeness of the sample, potentially limits the generalizability of the findings to more enduring “real-life” dyads. In the present study, field dependence/field independence was examined as a potential mediator of relationship quality in married dyads. Consistent with Witkin's theory of psychological differentiation, it was predicted that spouses with relatively field-dependent partners and individuals from dyads with similar levels of differentiation would have fewer complaints. Results showed, contrary to the predictions, that husbands married to field-dependent wives and wives from matched dyads had more complaints about their marital relationships. These findings suggest the need for a careful evaluation of the role of cognitive style in the domain of intimate interpersonal relationships. Apparently, it may not be sufficient to generalize about the role of personality in social relationships from the results of studies employing experimentally created dyads or groups to other, more enduring and real-life types of social relationships.  相似文献

Educable mentally retarded (EMR) and nonretarded adults free recalled lists of (a) words, (b) minitasks performed by the subjects (SPTs), (c) minitasks performed by the experimenter (EPTs), or (d) task instructions. The EMR subjects were significantly inferior to the nonretarded subjects in the immediate recall of words, EPTs and instructions, but not in the immediate recall of SPTs. This proficiency of the EMR subjects in SPT recall was attributed to the nonstrategic nature of this test. The EMR subjects were, however, inferior to the nonretarded subjects in a final free recall (recall of all lists) of all four types of item.  相似文献

Members of over 100 families were administered the Wechsler Adult Intelligence Scale (WAIS) as well as various psychometric tests of personality. Individual cognitive and personality measures often were associated. Parent personality scale scores often were associated with offspring WAIS scores and vice versa. Stepwise multiple regressions demonstrated that knowledge of parental personality test scores substantially increased the predictability of offspring WAIS scores.  相似文献

A comprehensive home assessment was performed for 116 families whose twins were participants in a longitudinal study of early mental development. A large number of rating and observations made by a social worker during the home visit were condensed via factor analysis into four primary scores: adequacy of the home environment, maternal temperament, maternal cognitive skills, and maternal social-affect. The HOME scales of Caldwell (1978) were also completed, and all scores were combined with previously obtained measures of parental education and socioeconomic status. These scores were entered into a multiple regression analysis as predictors of off-spring mental development at 4 criterion ages: 6 months, 24 months, 3 years, and 6 years. The relationship was very weak at 6 months, but improved steadily over ages until reaching Rmult = .66 at 6 years. The four primary scores listed above plus father education all contributed significantly to the prediction of 6-year IQ scores, making it evident that home/family variables were substantially related to early mental development. However, a subsequent analysis using only parental education and SES as predictors yielded Rmult = .59. The qualitative features of home and mother thus appeared to augment a core linkage between parents and offspring representing intrinsic capabilities. The results are discussed in terms of both heritage and home environment as contributors to early mental development.  相似文献

Absolute magnitude estimates of line length were made by two groups of nine subjects each. One group was tested and then retested at an intersession interval of 1 year and the other, at an intersession interval of 2 years. High temporal stability was observed in both groups in both the slope values, individual and group, of the power functions and in the numerical responses themselves.  相似文献
