Three experiments were done to determine the additivity of pairwise comparisons of three personality item characteristics: (1) Length, (2) Ambiguity and (3) Controversiality, using Sternberg's (1969) method. Each of these item attributes was chosen as an experimental factor to represent a stage in a postulated model of responding to personality items. Results indicated non-additivity of the experimental factors which was interpreted as supporting the postulated model.  相似文献

A technique for isolating substages in a processing sequence (Sternberg, 1969) was used to examine two central stages in a postulated model of responding to personality items. The Self-Referent Decision (SRD) stage, where item content is compared to stored memory elements, and the Response Selection Stage, where the output of the SRD is mapped into available response alternatives, were analyzed to determine if they could be seen as separate stages. Results indicated that a modular model that viewed these two stages as being separate was supported. These results were also discussed in relation to existing models of item responding processes and the dichotomous/Likert response format issue.  相似文献

In Experiment I. the effects of the range of the distribution of preparatory intervals (Pls) on the effect of PI on RT was demonstrated, and disparate conclusions about the development of preparatory set were thereby accounted for to some degree. In Experiment II. both range of the PIs and their average value were examined in a factorial design for their effects on RT. and it was concluded that, for any average value, greater range will result in greater PI effects; and for any range, greater average values will result in smaller PI effects on RT.  相似文献

This study examined the relationship between mothers and their teenage daughters in order to determine if there was a significant difference in perceived relationships between pregnant and nonpregnant mother-daughter dyads in a predominantly black sample. Results indicated that the nonpregnant daughters and their mothers felt significantly more intimacy toward each other than did the pregnant daughters and their mothers. However, correlations of the mother and daughter scores revealed that the intimacy scores of the mothers of the pregnant daughters were positively correlated with their daughters' attachment scores, suggesting that the mothers and their pregnant daughters were more in agreement regarding their relationship than were the nonpregnant mother-daughter pairs.  相似文献

Motion parallax has been shown to be an effective and unambiguous source of information about the structure of three-dimensional (3-D) surfaces, both when an observer makes lateral movements with respect to a stationary surface and when the surface translates with respect to a stationary observer (Rogers & Graham, 1979). When the same pattern of relative motions among parts of the simulated surface is presented to a stationary observer on an unmoving monitor, the perceived corrugations are unstable with respect to the direction of the peaks and troughs. The lack of ambiguity in the original demonstrations could be due to the presence of (1) non-visual information (proprioceptive and vestibular signals) produced when the observer moves or tracks a moving surface, and/or (2) additional optic flow information available in the whole array. To distinguish between these two possibilities, we measured perceived ambiguity in simulated 3-D surfaces in situations where either nonvisual information or one of four kinds of visual information was present. Both visual and nonvisual information were effective in disambiguating the direction of depth within the simulated surface. Real perspective shape transformations affecting the elements of the display were most effective in disambiguating the display.  相似文献

Fear-arousing persuasive communications frequently incorporate so many types of information that the results can be difficult to interpret. R. Nisbett and L. Ross' (1980, Human inference: Strategies and shortcomings of social judgment, Englewood Cliffs, NJ: Prentice-Hall) analysis of informational vividness offers an attractive conceptual framework that identifies and predicts the effects of several types of information that have been confounded with other variables in fear appeal studies. Thus, the first purpose of this factorial experiment was to investigate the persuasive impact of three types of vivid information frequently used in fear appeals: emotional interest, concreteness, and proximity. It was predicted that vivid information would be more persuasive than pallid information. The results disclosed that emotionally interesting information was highly effective in changing intentions to seek protection from the depicted health threat. Also, the impact of information of high emotional interest and greater temporal and spatial proximity was enhanced with the passage of time, but information of low emotional interest and proximity diminished over time. Additional findings indicated that concrete, specific information was memorable and affected beliefs. The data rejected the hypothesis that memorial availability mediated the effects of vivid information. Implications for designing and strengthening fear appeals were discussed.  相似文献
