The equivalence of three statistical packages for performing hierarchical cluster analysis

Three different software programs which contain hierarchical agglomerative cluster analysis procedures were shown to generate different solutions on the same data set using apparently the same options. The basis for the differences in the solutions was the formulae used to calculate Euclidean distance. Users of statistical software were warned of terminological confusion concerning cluster analysis.This research was supported by a National Science Foundation grant (DCR#74-20007) entitled A Consumer Report on Cluster Analysis Software. The relationship of sexual attitudes,attitudes about women,and racial attitudes in white males

A questionnaire measuring sexual attitudes, attitudes about women, and racial attitudes was administered to 350 White male college students. Sexual attitudes characterized by sexual guilt, emphasis on personal and social control of sexual expression, and depersonalization of sex were significantly positively correlated (p<.001) with attitudes that typified women in terms of traditional masculine—feminine stereotypes and good (nonsexual)—bad (sexual) dichotomies. These stereotyped and dichotomous attitudes about women and constricted and depersonalized sexual attitudes were both significantly positively correlated (p<.001) with negative racial attitudes. The implications of these results and other research suggested by this investigation are discussed.This report is based on a dissertation submitted in partial fulfillment of the requirements for the Ph.D. degree at Michigan State University, 1973. Effects of schedule and magnitude of reinforcement under conditions of thirst motivation

In contrast to a recent finding (Macdonald, G. E., & De Toledo, L. Learning and Motivation, 1974, 5, 288–298.) the results of three experiments investigating various partial reinforcement (PRF) manipulations under conditions of thirst motivation demonstrated strong similarity to analogous manipulations involving food reward. Specifically, for animals receiving water reinforcement, PRF was shown to generate greater resistance to extinction than continuous reinforcement (Expt 1 & 3), the schedule of reinforcement was shown to interact with level of acquisition (Expt 1 and 2), and the magnitude of the partial reinforcement extinction effect was shown to be a function of reward magnitude (Expt 3). These results provide strong evidence that mechanisms which operate in partial reinforcement situations are highly similar, regardless of the type of appetitive reinforcement.

Parent/toddler education and guidance group

The Parent/Toddler Education and Guidance Group is designed for parents and their 18–36 month old children who are experiencing mild to moderate difficulties with the developmental issues of toddlerhood. The goal of the group is to help parents support their child's growing autonomy, and create a new level of communication between parent and child. The program is described in a general way and is then illustrated in examples of two cases.
