Studies of polysemy are few in number and are contradictory. Some have found differences between polysemy and homonymy (L. Frazier & K. Rayner, 1990), and others have found similarities (D. K. Klein & G. Murphy, 2001). The authors investigated this issue using the methods of D. K. Klein and G. Murphy (2001), in whose study participants judged whether ambiguous words embedded in word pairs (e.g., tasty chicken) made sense as a function of a cooperating, conflicting, or neutral context. The ambiguous words were independently rated as having low, moderate, or highly overlapping senses to approximate a continuum from homonymy to metonymic polysemy. The effects of meaning dominance were examined. Words with highly overlapping meanings (e.g., metonymy) showed reduced effects of context and dominance compared with words with moderately or low overlapping meanings (e.g., metaphorical polysemy and homonymy). These results suggest that the comprehension of ambiguous words is mediated by the semantic overlap of alternative senses/meanings. 相似文献

Research productivity was examined across 5 highly nominated multicultural psychology journals. This yielded a ranking of 40 highly productive institutions and individuals between 1994 and 2007. The results are potentially useful in beginning to track trends in the publication of multicultural psychology studies in research journals. We examined the decision strategies and cue use of experts and novices in a consequential domain: crime. Three participant
groups decided which of two residential properties was more likely to be burgled, on the basis of eight cues such as location
of the property. The two expert groups were experienced burglars and police officers, and the novice group was composed of
graduate students. We found that experts’ choices were best predicted by a lexicographic heuristic strategy called take-the-best
that implies noncompensatory information processing, whereas novices’ choices were best predicted by a weighted additive linear
strategy that implies compensatory processing. The two expert groups, however, differed in the cues they considered important
in making their choices, and the police officers were actually more similar to novices in this regard. These findings extend
the literature on judgment, decision making, and expertise, and have implications for criminal justice policy. 相似文献

The purpose of this study was to demonstrate derived manding skills in 2 adults with severe developmental disabilities and language deficits by contriving transitive conditioned establishing operations. Specifically, we evaluated whether a history of reinforced conditional discrimination learning would ultimately result in a derived mand repertoire, in which participants manded for items that were needed to complete chained tasks. After mastering the first three phases of the picture exchange communication system (PECS), participants were taught to mand for the needed items by exchanging pictures of the items for the items themselves. They were then taught to conditionally relate the dictated names of the items to the corresponding pictures of the items and to relate the dictated names to the corresponding printed words. We then tested, in the absence of reinforcement, whether participants would mand for the items needed to complete the chained tasks using text rather than pictures. Both participants showed the emergence of derived mands and some derived stimulus relations as a result of this instruction. Some of the derived relations were shown to be intact at 1-month follow-up, and scores on derived mand probes were higher at follow-up than before training. In addition, the 2 participants vocally requested the needed items on maintenance test probes, a skill that was never trained and was not previously in their repertoires. These results suggest that a history of reinforced relational responding may facilitate the expansion of a number of verbal skills and emphasize the possibility of a synthesis of Skinner's (1957) analysis of verbal behavior and derived stimulus relations into language-training efforts for persons with significant disabilities. 相似文献

The purpose of this study was to examine how exercise level, exercise motives, and barriers changed from the baseline phase to the follow-up phase after a behavioural and cognitive intervention aimed at increasing exercise. Seventy-five members of our university community (43 subjects in the control group and 32 in the experimental group), all of whom received cognitive feedback, agreed to complete the baseline phase. Only the experimental group received behavioural feedback and a free-access gym ticket with personal training in order to facilitate their adherence to exercise. The results suggest that a combination of behavioural and psychological techniques is an efficient strategy for increasing exercise level. In addition, the results showed that extrinsic motivation predominates the early stages of change-of-exercise behaviour, and that intrinsic motivation is important for progression towards maintenance. Subjects who decreased their exercise level increased their extrinsic exercise motivation and subjects who increased their exercise level decreased the barriers related to intrinsic motivation. These findings indicate that, in order to facilitate exercise adherence, feedback about motives for undertaking exercise is needed, combined with advice about how to improve physical condition. This combination could help eliminate certain barriers that hinder engaging in an active and healthy life-style. 相似文献

XS-DIF is a program for detection of Differential Item Functioning (DIF) using Item Response Theory (IRT). We examined coping with risky behaviors (cigarettes, alcohol/drugs, yelling/ hitting, and anger), familism (family proximity
and parental closeness) and parental monitoring (knowledge and discipline) in a sample of 56 adolescents (11–15 years old)
predominantly of Mexican descent at two time points. Multiple linear regression analysis indicated that more time spent with
family (proximity) at Time 1 significantly predicts higher parental monitoring at Time two. Coping with more risky behaviors
at Time 1 was significantly associated with less parental monitoring at Time 2. More parental closeness Time 1, more parental
monitoring Time 1, and more parental monitoring Time 2 were associated with less coping with risky behaviors at Time 2. The
cultural value of familism, particularly spending time with family in positive activities, appears to increase parental monitoring
which may lead to less coping with risky behaviors among Mexican descent adolescents. Future studies may investigate gendered
mechanisms for how extended family may increase not only parental knowledge of youth activities, but also youth perception
