In his paper, “Should the Numbers Count?" John Taurek imagines that we are in a position such that we can either save a group of five people, or we can save one individual, David. We cannot save David and the five. This is because they each require a life-saving drug. However, David needs all of the drug if he is to survive, while the other five need only a fifth each. Typically, people have argued as if there was a choice to be made: either numbers matter, in which case we should save the greater number, or numbers don't matter, but rather there is moral value in giving each person an equal chance of survival, and therefore we should toss a coin. My claim is that we do not have to make a choice in this way. Rather, numbers do matter, but it doesn't follow that we should always save the greater number. And likewise, there is moral value in giving each person an equal chance of survival, but it doesn't follow that we should always toss a coin. In addition, I argue that a similar approach can be applied to situations in which we can save one person or another, but the chances of success are different. 相似文献

Three studies explored whether odor can influence people's cognition and behavior without their being consciously aware of the influence. In two studies, we tested and confirmed that when participants were unobtrusively exposed to citrus-scented all-purpose cleaner, the mental accessibility of the behavior concept of cleaning was enhanced, as was indicated by faster identification of cleaning-related words in a lexical decision task and higher frequency of listing cleaning-related activities when describing expected behavior during the day. Finally, a third study established that the mere exposure to the scent of all-purpose cleaner caused participants to keep their direct environment more clean during an eating task. Awareness checks showed that participants were unaware of this influence. The present studies reveal the nonconscious influence that olfactory cues can have on thinking and doing. 相似文献

Incidental recognition memory for faces previously exposed as task-irrelevant distractors was assessed as a function of the
attentional load of an unrelated task performed on superimposed letter strings at exposure. In Experiment 1, subjects were
told to ignore the faces and either to judge the color of the letters (low load) or to search for an angular target letter
among other angular letters (high load). A surprise recognition memory test revealed that despite the irrelevance of all faces
at exposure, those exposed under low-load conditions were later recognized, but those exposed under high-load conditions were
not. Experiment 2 found a similar pattern when both the high- and low-load tasks required shape judgments for the letters
but made differing attentional demands. Finally, Experiment 3 showed that high load in a nonface task can significantly reduce
even immediate recognition of a fixated face from the preceding trial. These results demonstrate that load in a nonface domain
(e.g., letter shape) can reduce face recognition, in accord with Lavie’s load theory. In addition to their theoretical impact,

Person-fit statistics test whether the likelihood of a respondent's complete vector of item scores on a test is low given the hypothesized item response theory model. This binary information may be insufficient for diagnosing the cause of a misfitting item-score vector. The authors propose a comprehensive methodology for person-fit analysis in the context of nonparametric item response theory. The methodology (a) includes H. Van der Flier's (1982) global person-fit statistic U3 to make the binary decision about fit or misfit of a person's item-score vector, (b) uses kernel smoothing (J. O. Ramsay, 1991) to estimate the person-response function for the misfitting item-score vectors, and (c) evaluates unexpected trends in the person-response function using a new local person-fit statistic (W. Anecdotal evidence from players and coaches indicates that cognitive processing (e.g., expectations about the upcoming pitch) plays an important role in successful baseball batting, yet this aspect of hitting has not been investigated in detail. The present study provides experimental evidence that prior expectations significantly influence the timing of a baseball swing. A two–state Markov model was used to predict the effects of pitch sequence and pitch count on batting performance. The model is a hitting strategy of switching between expectancy states using a simple set of transition rules. In a simulated batting experiment, the model provided a good fit to the hitting performance of 6 experienced college baseball players, and the estimated model parameters were highly correlated with playing level. 相似文献

Background: Recent research on the influence of presentation format on the effectiveness of multimedia instructions has yielded some interesting results. According to cognitive load theory (Sweller, Van Merriënboer, & Paas, 1998) and Mayer's theory of multimedia learning (Mayer, 2001), replacing visual text with spoken text (the modality effect) and adding visual cues relating elements of a picture to the text (the cueing effect) both increase the effectiveness of multimedia instructions in terms of better learning results or less mental effort spent. Aims: The aim of this study was to test the generalisability of the modality and cueing effect in a classroom setting. Sample: The participants were 111 second‐year students from the Department of Education at the University of Gent in Belgium (age between 19 and 25 years). Method: The participants studied a web‐based multimedia lesson on instructional design for about one hour. Afterwards they completed a retention and a transfer test. During both the instruction and the tests, self‐report measures of mental effort were administered. Results: Adding visual cues to the pictures resulted in higher retention scores, while replacing visual text with spoken text resulted in lower retention and transfer scores. Conclusions: Only a weak cueing effect and even a reverse modality effect have been found, indicating that both effects do not easily generalise to non‐laboratory settings. A possible explanation for the reversed modality effect is that the multimedia instructions in this study were learner‐paced, as opposed to the system‐paced instructions used in earlier research. 相似文献

The present research examined the invariance hypothesis, which predicts lower levels of social dominance orientation (SDO) for women compared to men even when accounting for other factors. Previous research shows that gender linked variables mediate the gender difference in SDO. In two studies using undergraduates in the northeastern U.S., we tested mediation by cognitive complexity, a variable linked to social status but not to gender. Study 1 (n?=?117) found that women had higher levels of attributional complexity, but not need for cognition. Study 2 (n?=?206) further found that attributional complexity mediated the relationship between gender and SDO, suggesting that higher cognitive complexity due to low social status may be involved in gender differences in SDO. 相似文献

The importance of social context in affecting attention has recently been highlighted by the finding that the presence of
a passive, nonevaluative confederate can improve selective attention. The underlying mechanism, however, remains unclear.
In this paper, we argue that social facilitation can be caused by distractor inhibition. Two distinct sources of evidence
are provided from an experiment employing the Stroop task with and without social presence. First, analysis of the response
time (RT) distribution indicates that interference is reduced at relatively long RTs. This is consistent with an inhibitory
mechanism, whose effects build up slowly. Further support is provided by showing that social facilitation is prevented by
