Objective: Studying personal narratives can generate understanding of how people experience physical and mental illness. However, few studies have explored narratives of engagement in health positive behaviours, with none focusing on men specifically. Thus, we sought to examine men’s experiences of their efforts to engage in and maintain healthy behaviours, focusing on meditation as an example of such behaviour.Design: We recruited 30 male meditators, using principles of maximum variation sampling, and conducted two in-depth interviews with each, separated by a year. Main outcome measures: We sought to elicit men’s narratives of their experiences of trying to maintain a meditation practice. Results: We identified an overall theme of a ‘positive health trajectory,’ in particular, making ‘progress’ through meditation. Under this were six main accounts. Only two articulated a ‘positive’ message about progress: Climbing a hierarchy of practitioners, and progress catalysed in other areas of life. The other four reflected the difficulties around progress: Progress being undermined by illness; disappointment with progress; progress ‘forgotten’ (superseded by other concerns); and progress re-conceptualised due to other priorities. Conclusion: Men’s narratives reveal the way they experience and construct their engagement with meditation – as an example of health behaviour – in terms of progress. 相似文献

Within this paper we examine the nature and characteristics of the concept of unconditional positive regard (UPR) and discuss how an experience of conscious identification (CI) within a person-centred counsellor may affect its levels and manifestations. Initially, theoretical aspects of UPR are examined, with reference to potential threats or benefits to UPR when a counsellor experiences CI. Following on from this, we discuss how this may affect practice, drawing upon data generated from a 4-year research study, which defined and examined the process of CI. 相似文献

What is it for a speech-act to be sincere? A very tempting answer, defended by John Searle and others, is that a speech-act is sincere just in case the speaker has the state of mind it expresses. I argue that we should instead hold that a speech-act is sincere just in case the speaker believes that she has the state of mind she believes it expresses (Sections 1 and 2). Scenarios in which speakers are deluded about their own states of mind play an important role in arguing for this account. In the course of developing this account I also explore how it might make good use of the often neglected distinction between insincerity and mere non-sincerity (Section 2). After defending and developing my positive proposal, I explore its implications for debates over expressivism in meta-ethics (Sections 3 and 4). 相似文献

As demand for genetic counseling regarding hereditary cancer continues to grow, more efficient methods of providing this service
must be explored. In this pilot study, group genetic counseling was offered to two different cohorts of women seeking genetic
counseling for Hereditary Breast and Ovarian Cancer. Seven group sessions, designed to cover all aspects of an individual
genetic counseling appointment, were conducted. Although patients were receptive to group genetic counseling, a significant
proportion chose individual counseling when given the option. Advantages of group genetic counseling include shared experience
and increased efficiency. Disadvantages include increased frustration at not being eligible for genetic testing, group influence
on decision-making, privacy concerns, increased need for follow-up, and difficulty booking group appointments. Overall, the
level of patient satisfaction with group genetic counseling was similar to that of individual counseling. The results of this
pilot study suggest that further research is needed to determine whether group genetic counseling is an acceptable alternative
to individual counseling. 相似文献

Moral particularists are united in their opposition to the codification of morality, and their work poses an important challenge to traditional ways of thinking about moral philosophy. Defenders of moral particularism have, with near unanimity, sought support from a doctrine they call ‘holism in the theory of reasons.’ We argue that this is all a mistake. There are two ways in which holism in the theory of reasons can be understood, but neither provides any support for moral particularism. 相似文献

The current research consisted of two studies examining the effects of reading physical and relational aggression in literature. In both studies, participants read one of two stories (containing physical or relational aggression), and then participated in one of two tasks to measure aggression. In Study 1, participants who read the physical aggression story were subsequently more physically aggressive than those who read the relational aggression story. Conversely, in Study 2, participants who read the relational aggression story were subsequently more relationally aggressive than those who read the physical aggression story. Combined, these results show evidence for specific effects of reading aggressive content in literature. 相似文献
