Employee-experienced High-performance Work Systems in Facilitating Employee Helping and Voice: The Role of Employees’ Proximal Perceptions and Trust in the Supervisor

Relative to previous research concerning the positive association between high-performance work systems (HPWS) and employees’ voice and helping, we examined a wider range of mediators reflecting employees’ ability, motivation, and opportunity to expand their citizenship-based role definitions. Trust in the supervisor was also investigated as a boundary condition on the relationships in question. Multisource data, collected in 4 waves, from 208 supervisor–employee dyads showed that employees’ efficacy, instrumentality, and autonomy perceptions concerning voice mediated the association between employee-experienced HPWS and expanded role definition for voice. Instrumentality mediated the relationship between employee-experienced HPWS and expanded role definition for helping. The positive links between employee-experienced HPWS and both supervisor-rated helping and voice were mediated by employees’ role definitions. Trust in the supervisor positively moderated the mediated effects.

Investigating the Reliability of the Sentence Verification Technique

Reading comprehension plays an important role in achievement for all academic domains. The purpose of this study is to describe the sentence verification technique (SVT) (Royer, Hastings, &; Hook, 1979 Royer, J. M., Hastings, C. N., &; Hook, C. (1979). A sentence verification technique for measuring reading comprehension. Journal of Reading Behavior, 11(4), 355–363. doi:10.1080/10862967909547341[Crossref] , [Google Scholar]) as an alternative method of assessing reading comprehension, which can be used with a variety of texts and across diverse populations and educational contexts. Additionally, this study adds a unique contribution to the extant literature on the SVT through an investigation of the precision of the instrument across proficiency levels. Data were gathered from a sample of 464 fourth-grade students from the Northeast region of the United States. Reliability was estimated using one, two, three, and four passage test forms. Two or three passages provided sufficient reliability. The conditional reliability analyses revealed that the SVT test scores were reliable for readers with average to below average proficiency, but did not provide reliable information for students who were very poor or strong readers.     

The Relationship of Drug Use to Suicide Ideation and Attempts Among African American,Hispanic, and White Non-Hispanic Male Adolescents

This study presents self-report cross-sectional and longitudinal data on associations between drug use, suicide ideation, and attempts in a multiethnic sample of seventh- and eighth-grade male adolescents attending school in the greater Miami, Florida, area. African Americans had the highest prevalence of 6-month ideation (20.5%), and Haitians had the highest attempts (11.4%). For the total sample, tranquilizers had the highest odds ratio for ideation (3.4), and PCP for attempts (6.2). Psychoactive drug-use was consistently related to attempts among Hispanics, white non-Hispanics, and African Americans. Acculturation strains interacted with cocaine and crack to predict suicide attempts among Hispanic respondents.
