Child-rearing expectations and developmental knowledge according to maternal age and parity

A convenience sample of 6% mothers was surveyed according to their attitudes toward childrearing and knowledge of developmental milestones. A majority of mothers, regardless of age, were incorrect in their assessment of when key infant abilities occur. When the responses were analyzed according to age, the youngest group of mothers (16 years and less) were least knowledgeable and had the least desirable child-rearing attitudes of the three age groups, although these differences were no more than would be expected by chance alone. Parity (operationalized as no child versus at least one child) had few associations with maternal knowledge or attitudes within any of the three age groups analyzed. The results are discussed in terms of future research as well as in the context of the ongoing expansion of parenting programs for mothers and fathers of all ages.     

Problem and program linkage: The early and periodic screening,diagnosis and treatment program as a means of preventing and detecting child abuse

This paper presents a case model for linkage of social service delivery programs with the prevention and detection of child abuse. The example of problem and problem linkage is given for the Early and Periodic Screening, Diagnosis and Treatment Program (EPSDT), the nation's largest preventive child health screening program designed to detect and treat early childhood medical and developmental conditions in indigent children. The screening activities combined with the efforts to educate parents as to the nature of normal child development suggests that the EPSDT program may be used to prevent the development of conditions that may lead to abuse as well as to identify children who have been abused.

Possible Worlds Semantics for Partial Meet Multiple Contraction

In the logic of theory change, the standard model is AGM, proposed by Alchourrón et al. (J Symb Log 50:510–530, 1985). This paper focuses on the extension of AGM that accounts for contractions of a theory by a set of sentences instead of only by a single sentence. Hansson (Theoria 55:114–132, 1989), Fuhrmann and Hansson (J Logic Lang Inf 3:39–74, 1994) generalized Partial Meet Contraction to the case of contractions by (possibly non-singleton) sets of sentences. In this paper we present the possible worlds semantics for partial meet multiple contractions.     

Risk assessment behaviors associated with corticosterone trigger the defense reaction to social isolation in rats: role of the anterior cingulate cortex

The extent to which the hypothalamic-pituitary-adrenal axis is activated by short-term and long-term consequences of stress is still open to investigation. This study aimed to determine (i) the correlation between plasma corticosterone and exploratory behavior exhibited by rats subjected to the elevated plus maze (EPM) following different periods of social isolation, (ii) the effects of the corticosterone synthesis blocker, metyrapone, on the behavioral consequences of isolation, and (iii) whether corticosterone produces its effects through an action on the anterior cingulate cortex, area 1 (Cg1). Rats were subjected to 30-min, 2-h, 24-h, or 7-day isolation periods before EPM exposure and plasma corticosterone assessments. Isolation for longer periods of time produced greater anxiogenic-like effects on the EPM. However, stretched attend posture (SAP) and plasma corticosterone concentrations were increased significantly after 30?min of isolation. Among all of the behavioral categories measured in the EPM, only SAP positively correlated with plasma corticosterone. Metyrapone injected prior to the 24?h isolation period reversed the anxiogenic effects of isolation. Moreover, corticosterone injected into the Cg1 produced a selective increase in SAP. These findings indicate that risk assessment behavior induced by the action of corticosterone on Cg1 neurons initiates a cascade of defensive responses during exposure to stressors.

Freudian, Lacanian, and Kohutian approaches to the subject of seeing another and being seen by the other are reviewed and critiqued. The mirroring metaphor, so often invoked in psychoanalysis, is brought under scrutiny and concluded to be naive to the complexity of interaction actually occurring when one is seeing oneself being seen. Utilizing infant research findings and currents in Continental philosophy, a case is made for a reading of Winnicott's mirroring conception as a relational event: embodied and embedded in an intersubjective matrix of prereflective immediacy. Breaking with analytic rigidity emphasizing opacity and abnegation, Winnicott embraced the visual rather than inherently mistrusting it, advancing the dark analyses of vision beyond their pessimistic appraisals of the impossibility of an encounter with alterity.     

Enactive Fields: An Approach to Interaction in the Kleinian-Bionian Model: Commentary on Paper by Lawrence J. Brown

In taking up the matter of intersubjectivity in Kleinian-Bionian theories Brown creatively reimagines the clinical situation, transcending demarcations of analytic schools to arrive (though never fully arrive) at new understandings of interaction. I discuss Brown's engaging paper from my own emerging concept of enactivity, drawing distinctions between this approach and Bion's approach and extending the enactive to a consideration of enactive fields that, like Brown's paper, draws on the seminal reinterpretation of Kleinian theory by the Barangers. In writing of the field as an emergent process of becoming I rely on Merleau-Ponty's notion of “singing the world” to illustrate my developing understanding of the possibilities for interaction in the Kleinian-Bionian tradition. My comments on Brown's clinical case material focus on what appears to me to be the intersubjective aspects of his approach.

This paper discusses Freud's "Oedipus complex" both in its elaboration of the "u¨ber-ich" and from a broader point of view, which relates to the development of man's moral sense. It is a disturbing experience to watch the continuous twilight of the function of the father, either as the head of the family or as the belief in a God or in a Truth that establishes a well-defined morality. At the same time, the function of the father as Lawgiver is supplanted by the function of money as the only value and the measure of all things. Since Freud's days, the field of morality has been increasingly invaded by the discourse of experts and administrators who determine Good and Evil with the intention of reaching a maximization of the profits and a more complete domination of our bodies. This paper questions the actual validity of the Oedipus complex as the organizer of modern man's sense of morality through its provocative title: "do we still have anything to do with the old blind man?"     

Developmental dissociation of visual dorsal stream parvo and magnocellular representations and the functional impact of negative retinotopic BOLD responses

Localized neurodevelopmental defects provide an opportunity to study structure–function correlations in the human nervous system. This unique multimodal case report of epileptogenic dysplasia in the visual cortex allowed exploring visual function across distinct pathways in retinotopic regions and the dorsal stream, in relation to fMRI retinotopic mapping and spike triggered BOLD responses.
