Breaking Psychological Contracts with the Burden of Workload: A Weekly Study of Job Resources as Moderators

This intra‐individual study examined relationships over time of job demands and resources with employee perceptions of psychological contract breach and violation, or the emotional impact of breach. Based on Conservation of Resources (COR) Theory, we expected job demands to increase the susceptibility of experiencing contract breach and violation over time, and we expected this relationship to be moderated by available job resources. In particular, autonomy and social support were expected to buffer relationships of job demands with breach, while development was expected to intensify relationships between job demands and breach. For violation, we expected job resources to intensify the relationships between job demands and breach, in line with the betrayal hypothesis. Analyses on weekly diary data showed that weekly job demands were related to higher contract breach perceptions in the following week when autonomy and social support were low and when development was high. Moreover, weekly job demands were related to higher violation in the next week, especially when social support was high. The study shows that job demands may be related to higher odds of experiencing a breach and higher violation, and job resources may play opposite roles in moderating the relationships of job demands with breach and violation.     

The Message of a Bottle: A Discussion of “Trump Cards and Klein Bottles: On the Collective of the Individual”

Relational psychoanalysis’ promise is to connect the personal and the collective/political. Through a phenomenological approach, this comment attempts to describe the subjective effects of the “Great History” in the analytic couple dynamics. Starting from the concepts of intersubject, vinculo and the one-to-many forms of relations –proposed by Francisco González– it expatiates on “resonance” as a way to recover fragments of experience shattered by trauma and “consonance” as a means to visualize this phenomena in other collectives, as a trans-collective experience. The piece invites the possibility of creating new analytic experiential object: the Klein Bottle. By entangling the individual with the multiple and history with the present, it opens new dimensions of meaning. It can be used both to deconstruct a fixated pleat of subjectivity and to open new forms of polyphonic relationality. This approach is offered as a path through which we analysts can rejoin to the march of history.     

Language and the Symptoms of Mental Illness Connection via Abstract Representations of the Self and the World

Abstract

The aim of the present study is to provide additional knowledge about the mediatory processes through which language contributes to the symptoms of mental illness. Although recent studies have provided insight about the relationship between language and the indicators of mental illness, the role of intervening variables in this connection has been ignored. The present investigation tested a structural equation model in which the need for the absolute truth about self and worry mediated the relationship of the gap between inner psychological experience and language with anxiety and depression. The results have provided support for the model and showed that the gap predicts both the need for absolute truth and worry which, in turn, predict the levels of anxiety and depression. The results have been discussed in the light of previous research, and implications for future research have also been considered.     

An application of visual interactive goal programming: a case in vendor selection decisions

This article presents the vendor selection problem of the hydraulic pump division of a US original equipment manufacturing company. The division wants to identify appropriate vendors and allocate purchase orders among them while minimizing product acquisition costs and maximizing total product quality and delivery reliability. Visual interactive goal programming is used as a multi‐criteria decision analysis tool. Interaction with decision makers during the model building and solution process, and implications are discussed. Copyright © 1999 John Wiley & Sons, Ltd.
