Simultaneously executed limb movements interfere with each other. Whereas the interference between discrete movements is examined mostly from a cognitive perspective, that between rhythmic movements is studied mainly from a dynamical systems perspective. As the tools and concepts developed by both communities are limited in their applicability to the other domain, it remains unclear if a common cause underlies motor interference in both domains. We investigated the interference between simultaneously executed discrete and rhythmic wrist movements. The discrete movements' reaction time and movement time decreased with increasing rhythmic movement frequency. The discrete movements accelerated or decelerated the rhythmic movements in a manner that depended on movement frequency and the discrete movement's initiation phase. The acceleration/deceleration profile was bimodal at low frequencies and unimodal at high frequencies, mimicking the hallmark feature of rhythmic-rhythmic coordination, thus suggesting that interference between movements may be invariant across different movement types.  相似文献

Three experiments examined age-related differences in irrelevant-speech effects. Younger and older adults were required to recall short prose texts or lists of semantically related words presented visually together with distractor speech. In all experiments, older adults made more semantically related intrusion errors from the irrelevant speech than younger adults. Results of a source memory test suggested that these age-related differences in interference are most likely due to both inhibitory deficits and source-monitoring problems. The results lend partial support to the inhibition deficit theory of cognitive aging.  相似文献

Three experiments are reported in which a total of 182 old and 193 young adults recalled sequences of digits presented visually in silence or accompanied by office noise. In each experiment, an effect of irrelevant sound was found-that is, a reduction of serial recall due to auditory distraction. Old adults exhibited poorer serial recall than did young adults, but the irrelevant-sound effect was equivalent in both age groups. This was true even though the sound level of the irrelevant sound was adjusted to each individual's hearing capability, and the effect remained whether or not the difficulty of the serial recall task was equated across age groups. These results are problematic for the inhibitory deficit theory of cognitive aging, which predicts that old adults should be more susceptible to auditory distraction than are young adults.  相似文献

In this paper we present a new implication of the unidimensional factor model. We prove that the partial correlation between two observed variables that load on one factor given any subset of other observed variables that load on this factor lies between zero and the zero-order correlation between these two observed variables. We implement this result in an empirical bootstrap test that rejects the unidimensional factor model when partial correlations are identified that are either stronger than the zero-order correlation or have a different sign than the zero-order correlation. We demonstrate the use of the test in an empirical data example with data consisting of fourteen items that measure extraversion.  相似文献

Rating the relevance of words for survival in the grasslands of a foreign land often leads to a memory advantage. However, it is as yet unclear whether the survival processing effect generalizes to source memory. Here, we examined whether people have enhanced source memory for the survival context in which an item has been encountered. Participants were asked to make survival-based or moving-based decisions about items prior to a classical source memory test. A multinomial model was used to measure old–new discrimination, source memory, and guessing biases separately. We replicated the finding of a survival advantage in old–new recognition. Extending previous results, we also found a survival-processing advantage in source memory. These results are in line with the richness-of-encoding explanation of the survival processing advantage and with an adaptive perspective on memory.  相似文献

One of the fundamental properties of spatial vision is the ability to localize objects in space. According to a recent proposal, accurate localization performance involves the operation of two systems: the attention system and the eye movement system. Upon stimulus presentation, attention is shifted to the target area: this provides coarse location information. Subsequently, a saccadic eye movement is executed: this provides fine location information. In this study we tested predictions derived from this model concerning the effects of precue information on localization performance. In a series of five experiments we manipulated duration of precue (71, 400, and 1,000 ms) and type of precue (spatial versus symbolic). Results showed that very short duration (i.e., 71 ms) spatial precues improved localization performance whereas very short duration symbolic precues did not. In contrast, the 1,000 ms duration precue condition showed similar amounts of precuing benefit for the spatial and symbolic precues. Multiple time scales and subsystem embedding in the learning of juggling   总被引:1,自引:0,他引:1  
To gain insight into the multiform dynamics and integration of remote yet pertinent subsystems into the performance of complex perceptual-motor skills, we recently conducted a series of longitudinal and cross-sectional experiments on the acquisition of 3-ball cascade juggling in which we measured, next to the ball trajectories, postural sway, eye and head movements and respiration. The aim of the present paper is to review the main results and theoretical implications of these experimental studies for understanding skill acquisition. As regards the evolution of the quality of the juggling itself, we found that only certain aspects of throwing and catching were adjusted, while the goal behavior of sustained juggling (operationalized as the number of consecutive throws) and the degree of frequency and phase locking between the ball trajectories, indexing pattern stability, increased monotonically. The latter three aspects evolved at different rates, reflecting the existence of a temporal hierarchy in learning. Postural sway exhibited initial manifestations of task-specific, possibly mechanically induced, modes of 3:1 and 3:2 frequency locking with the ball trajectories and only few transitions between those modes. Functional stability appeared to be enhanced during practice by minimizing the sway amplitudes rather than by adjusting the sway dynamics itself. Eye and point-of-gaze movements also showed instances of 3:1 and 3:2 frequency locking with the ball trajectories; especially establishing a 3:1 locking (horizontal eye movements) appeared to be important. Expert behavior suggested that extended practice promotes reliance on multiple sources of information, allowing the proficient juggler to switch adaptively between functional organizations involving distinct perceptual systems. No consistent coordination between breathing and juggling was found. It was concluded that multiform dynamics, involving hierarchically ordered time scales, underlie the acquisition of complex skills and that the subsystems subserving realization of the task goal become assembled and embedded in a task- and subsystem-specific manner.  相似文献

Uncertainty about future threat has been found to be associated with an overestimation of threat probability and is hypothesized to elicit additional allocation of attention. We used event-related potentials to examine uncertainty-related dynamics in attentional allocation, exploiting brain potentials’ high temporal resolution and sensitivity to attention. Thirty participants performed a picture-viewing task in which cues indicated the subsequent picture valence. A certain-neutral and a certain-aversive cue accurately predicted subsequent picture valence, whereas an uncertain cue did not. Participants overestimated the effective frequency of aversive pictures following the uncertain cue, both during and after the task, signifying expectancy and covariation biases, and they tended to express lower subjective valences for aversive pictures presented after the uncertain cue. Pictures elicited increased P2 and LPP amplitudes when their valence could not be predicted from the cue. For the LPP, this effect was more pronounced in response to neutral pictures. Uncertainty appears to enhance the engagement of early phasic and sustained attention for uncertainly cued targets. Thus, defensive motivation related to uncertainty about future threat elicits specific attentional dynamics implicating prioritization at various processing stages, especially for nonthreatening stimuli that tend to violate expectations.  相似文献

Although variations in the standard prehensile pattern can be found in the literature, these alternative patterns have never been studied systematically. This was the goal of the current paper. Ten participants picked up objects with a pincer grip. Objects (3, 5, or 7cm in diameter) were placed at 30, 60, 90, or 120cm from the hands' starting location. Usually the hand was opened gradually to a maximum immediately followed by hand closing, called the standard hand opening pattern. In the alternative opening patterns the hand opening was bumpy, or the hand aperture stayed at a plateau before closing started. Two participants in particular delayed the start of grasping with respect to start of reaching, with the delay time increasing with object distance. For larger object distances and smaller object sizes, the bumpy and plateau hand opening patterns were used more often. We tentatively concluded that the alternative hand opening patterns extended the hand opening phase, to arrive at the appropriate hand aperture at the appropriate time to close the hand for grasping the object. Variations in hand opening patterns deserve attention because this might lead to new insights into the coordination of reaching and grasping.  相似文献
