This study explores the effect of individuation training on the acquisition of race-specific expertise. First, we investigated whether practice individuating other-race faces yields improvement in perceptual discrimination for novel faces of that race. Second, we asked whether there was similar improvement for novel faces of a different race for which participants received equal practice, but in an orthogonal task that did not require individuation. Caucasian participants were trained to individuate faces of one race (African American or Hispanic) and to make difficult eye-luminance judgments on faces of the other race. By equating these tasks we are able to rule out raw experience, visual attention, or performance/success-induced positivity as the critical factors that produce race-specific improvements. These results indicate that individuation practice is one mechanism through which cognitive, perceptual, and/or social processes promote growth of the own-race face recognition advantage.  相似文献

In a double-shifting context paradigm, subjects gave magnitude estimates of the perceived intensity of qualitatively dissimilar taste substances (saccharin and quinine, sucrose and quinine) or qualitatively similar ones (saccharin and sucrose), with each pair of substances taking on different contextual sets of concentrations in different sessions. The dissimilar pairs produced substantial differential effects of context (e.g., a particular concentration of saccharin or sucrose was judged more intense than a particular quinine in one contextual setting, less intense in another), but the similar pair did not. This result accords with the hypothesis that differential context effects depend on qualitative similarity. Contrary to expectations, however, the magnitude of the context effect did not differ in tasters and nontasters of the bitter substance 6-n-propylthiouracil (PROP), groups previously shown to differ in sensitivity to bitterness in saccharin. Similarity judgments suggest that saccharin and sucrose were qualitatively alike for all subjects, regardless of sensitivity to PROP.  相似文献

In this study, groups of ‘alcoholic’ subjects were independently rated as to their degree of dependence by a technique previously validated. The two groups of moderately and severely dependent subjects were then given the 101-item EPQ. In keeping with other similar studies, the data suggested that high N, high P and low E in men were related to the Clinical Alcohol Personality. Further analysis of these and other data suggest that whilst raised N scores may be a spurious artefact which is a consequence of heavy alcohol consumption, the E and P findings may reflect stable predispositions. There were no sex differences, but there was a major group difference on P, with both severely dependent men and women scoring significantly higher than their less dependent counterparts.  相似文献

Students attending Seventh-day Adventist (Adventist) schools in Australia have been shown to have better health status and behaviours compared to secular norms, yet these schools cater for a high percentage of non-Adventist students. The purpose of this study was to investigate the influence of religious affiliation (Adventist/non-Adventist) on the health status and behaviours of students attending Adventist secondary schools in Australia. The sample included 1734 students who responded to a health and lifestyle survey that captured demographic details, self-reported height and weight, self-reported health status, mental health and select health behaviours. Students who identified themselves as Adventist reported significantly better health behaviours than the non-Adventist students in several behavioural domains, especially among the male students. However, this did not translate to a difference in health status. Further research is needed to understand the causal mechanisms responsible for the potential health advantage of Adventist students, which may include family or church religious influences.  相似文献

Prior work suggests that nonface objects of expertise can interfere with the perception of faces when the two categories are alternately presented, suggesting competition for shared perceptual resources. Here, we ask whether task-irrelevant distractors from a category of expertise compete when faces are presented in a standard visual search task. Participants searched for a target (face or sofa) in an array containing both relevant and irrelevant distractors. The number of distractors from the target category (face or sofa) remained constant, whereas the number of distractors from the irrelevant category (cars) varied. Search slopes, calculated as a function of the number of irrelevant cars, were correlated with car expertise. The effect was not due to car distractors grabbing attention, because they did not compete with sofa targets. Objects of expertise interfere with face perception even when they are task irrelevant, visually distinct, and separated in space from faces.  相似文献

By encouraging short periods of abstinence, conditions representing high and low craving were arranged in the homes of 10 alcoholic subjects on two separate occasions. The alcoholic's subjective, physiological and behavioural responses and their interrelationships over a three and a half-hour response prevention period, were recorded in an attempt to define the concept of craving. A behavioural measure, speed of drinking a prescribed amount of alcohol, was validated as a correlate of craving.  相似文献
