Taking Stock at Mid‐Career: Challenges and Opportunities for Faculty

Abstract. Beginning with a series of questions designed to peak reader curiosity and expose key challenges for mid‐career faculty, the authors uncover several issues in post‐tenure faculty life and work, and they reflect on images for understanding and responding to these challenges. Topics identified include mid‐career as an opportunity for deeper investment in one's teaching, challenges associated with competing claims for time, shifts in research that can accompany the transition to mid‐career, challenges in dealing with an increasing generational gap between oneself and one's students, responsibilities associated with being a longer‐term member of a faculty, and feelings of fatigue and occasional alienation from one's educational institution and/or church.

Kernel smoothing approaches to nonparametric item characteristic curve estimation

The option characteristic curve, the relation between ability and probability of choosing a particular option for a test item, can be estimated by nonparametric smoothing techniques. What is smoothed is the relation between some function of estimated examinee ability rankings and the binary variable indicating whether or not the option was chosen. This paper explores the use of kernel smoothing, which is particularly well suited to this application. Examples show that, with some help from the fast Fourier transform, estimates can be computed about 500 times as rapidly as when using commonly used parametric approaches such as maximum marginal likelihood estimation using the three-parameter logistic distribution. Simulations suggest that there is no loss of efficiency even when the population curves are three-parameter logistic. Behavioural approaches to bereavement

Persons who get “hung up” in an unresolved grief reaction appear to be similar in many ways to those who develop phobias. As behaviour therapy approaches to phobias have been highly successful, similar tactics have been tried out with persons involved in pathological grief, with gratifying success. The characteristics of grief reactions are briefly described, as is Eysenck's theory on the development and maintenance of phobias. This theory is applied to explain how and why some people develop pathological grief reactions. A modified flooding technique of confrontation with pain-evoking stimuli is described and some results are presented. The psychoanalytic literature gives indications as to what kinds of emotional reactions the therapist can expect.     

Monotonic weighted power transformations to additivity

A class of monotonic transformations which generalize the power transformation is fit to the independent and dependent variables in multiple regression so that the resulting additive relationship is optimized. This is achieved by minimizing a quadratic fitting criterion with linear inequality constraints on the parameters. A quadratic programming technique which works reliably and quickly in this application is outlined. Some examples of the analysis of artificial and real data are offered.This work was supported by National Research Council of Canada Grant APA 320 to the author.     

Principal components analysis of sampled functions

This paper describes a technique for principal components analysis of data consisting ofn functions each observed atp argument values. This problem arises particularly in the analysis of longitudinal data in which some behavior of a number of subjects is measured at a number of points in time. In such cases information about the behavior of one or more derivatives of the function being sampled can often be very useful, as for example in the analysis of growth or learning curves. It is shown that the use of derivative information is equivalent to a change of metric for the row space in classical principal components analysis. The reproducing kernel for the Hilbert space of functions plays a central role, and defines the best interpolating functions, which are generalized spline functions. An example is offered of how sensitivity to derivative information can reveal interesting aspects of the data.This research was supported by Grant PA 0320 to the second author by the Natural Sciences and Research Council of Canada. The joint analysis of direct ratings,pairwise preferences,and dissimilarities

In studies involving judgments of similarity or dissimilarity, a variety of other variables may also be measured. Examples might be direct ratings of the stimuli, pairwise preference judgments, and physical measurements of the stimuli with respect to various properties. In such cases, there are important advantages to joint analyses of the dissimilarity and collateral variables. A variety of models are described for relating these and algorithms described for fitting these to data. A number of hypothesis tests are developed and an example offered.The research reported here was supported by grant number APA 320 to the author by the National Research Council of Canada.
