Two simple approximations to the distributions of quadratic forms

Many test statistics are asymptotically equivalent to quadratic forms of normal variables, which are further equivalent to with z_i being independent and following N(0,1). Two approximations to the distribution of T have been implemented in popular software and are widely used in evaluating various models. It is important to know how accurate these approximations are when compared to each other and to the exact distribution of T. The paper systematically studies the quality of the two approximations and examines the effect of the λ_i and the degrees of freedom d by analysis and Monte Carlo. The results imply that the adjusted distribution for T can be as good as knowing its exact distribution. When the coefficient of variation of the λ_i is small, the rescaled statistic is also adequate for practical model inference. But comparing T_R against will inflate type I errors when substantial differences exist among the λ_i, especially, when d is also large.

‘But Suppose Everyone Did the Same’1 — The Case of the Danish Utopian Micro‐Society of Christiania

abstract The paper considers what (if anything) can justify that a utopian community or a micro‐society makes an exception to the general rules of society for itself. The discussion evolves around the Danish case of Christiania. Three moral theories, to wit Kantian constructivism, rule‐consequentialism and act‐consequentialism, are applied to the case at hand. The aim is to test whether the exceptions in question are unjust or in other ways morally problematic. The two former theories appear to deny the justice of Christiania. The relevant exceptions are unacceptable according to those two moral perspectives. Act‐consequentialism, however, seems to endorse the case of Christiania, including the exceptions pertaining to it. While the latter theory is often thought to conflict with widely shared reflective moral convictions, in this case it might square with at least an important pragmatic layer of Danish public culture.     

ON THE LOOKS OF THINGS

In recent publications, Michael Tye and Alva Noë have claimed that there is a sense in which a tilted plate looks round and another sense in which it looks elliptical. This paper argues that their proposal faces decisive objections. On Tye and Noë's account of ordinary, veridical perception, appearances are in constant conflict. As a characterization of ordinary visual experience, this cannot be correct. I examine various responses to this criticism, and conclude that they all fail. I then argue that Noë's account has the further, unintended and undesirable consequence of promoting a version of the sense‐datum theory.     

Sect‐to‐Church Movement in Globalization: Transforming Pentecostalism and Coastal Intermediaries in Contemporary China

After eight months of itinerant fieldwork across 17 provinces, I elaborate on how the largest Pentecostal group deeply localized in China, the True Jesus Church, has undergone sect‐to‐church movement through interactions among overseas, coastal, and inland churches in globalizing China. A critical intermediary role in this process has been taken by emerging coastal Fujian leaders, who have been successfully reforming not only their churches but also inland counterparts by tactfully utilizing overseas churches as stimuli, resources providers, and legitimizers for the transformation project. The Chinese fever of integration into the world and high status granted to the overseas are keys to smooth away the barriers of the traditionalist old guard. Accordingly, the originally enclosed, anti‐political, sectarian, spirit‐led group has turned more institutionalized, laity‐oriented, text‐based, and welcoming to the government and mainstream Protestantism.     

Institutional Origins of Subjective Well-Being: Estimating the Effects of Economic Freedom on National Happiness

We exploit the cross-country differences in economic freedom to examine the link between the quality of institutions and subjective well-being. Using Veenhoven’s happiness dataset, the evidence suggests countries with better economic institutions and higher level of economic freedom, captured by the security of property rights, open markets and more limited government, are significantly more likely to experience greater subjective well-being after controlling for structural confounders of national subjective well-being such as income, unemployment, inequality, social capital and life satisfaction. The effect of institutions on cross-national happiness is both significant and robust to different model specifications, estimation techniques and possible sources of endogeneity. Furthermore, our panel data analysis reveals that over time higher levels of economic freedom are associated with decreasing subjective well-being after controlling for state dependence and income.     

从个体性到社会性:具身研究范式的转向

自20世纪80年代,研究者开始从具身角度看待认知,以具身性为共同话题形成一个与经典离身认知不同的具身研究范式。过去学界主要从个体身体视角理解具身概念,强调具身研究范式的个体性维度。当前学界开始从社会文化视角理解具身概念,强调具身研究范式的社会性维度。这种转变体现了具身研究范式从个体性到社会性的转向。只有将具身的个体性和社会性维度整合起来,从整体构架重新思考具身概念,才能把握其完整内涵。     

中国公安机关警察心理健康状况的元分析

运用元分析考察中国公安机关警察基于SCL-90的心理健康状况及影响因素。元分析共纳入文献67篇, 研究发现：(1)警察心理健康状况较正常人差, 两者在绝大多数因子上差异显著, 只有在与常模一比较时在人际敏感因子上效应量没有达到显著(d = 0.05, p = 0.142 > 0.05)。(2)警察心理健康状况与军人相当, 两者在5个因子存在显著差异(d = −0.16~0.21, p = 0.000~0.041 < 0.05), 但是绝大多数效应量都在小范围以内。(3)除性别外, 年龄、婚姻状况、文化程度、警种、地区、样本容量等因素对研究结果有影响。以后的调查研究应该注意这些变量的影响。     

大连地区企业医院产权制度改革的实践与思考

企业医院社会化是区域卫生规划与卫生工作实行全行业管理的前提条件,也是国企改革和社会改革的需要,医企分离势在必行.在企业医院剥离过程中,医院产权制度改革已经成为医院改革的主要矛盾和深化医院改革的首要问题.通过大连地区企业医院产权制度改革的实践经验,对企业医院剥离模式进行探讨,阐述了对医院产权制度改革的认识,并提出合理化建议.
