GROUP HOMOGENEITY, RANGE RESTRICTION, AND RANGE ENHANCEMENT EFFECTS ON CORRELATIONS

Recently, the issue of range enhancement effects on correlations has been raised as a potential criticism of correction for range restriction in validity generalization. While adding to or deleting from a sample can affect both the variance and correlation in the sample, increases or decreases in individual differences in an intact sample resulting from such factors as history, maturation, training, and experience will not necessarily affect correlations. If such changes in individual differences do occur in concurrent validation studies, the most likely result will be an underestimate of the unrestricted validity.

Spirituality and Multimodal Therapy: A Practical Approach to Incorporating Spirituality in Counseling

The purpose of this article is to describe how the dimension of spirituality can be added to an existing counseling theory, multimodal therapy (MMT; A. A. Lazarus, 1984), to provide counselors with a practical approach to incorporating clients' religious and spiritual beliefs in the counseling process. An explanation of MMT is given, as well as its supporting research. The context of spirituality in counseling is discussed, and the process by which it can be integrated into the MMT model is explained. Two case studies are described to demonstrate how spiritual issues can be assessed and used to strengthen the counseling process. Finally, implications for counseling are discussed.     

Family Therapy and Drug Abuse: A National Survey

The following report describes the results of a national study of the role of family therapy in the drug abuse field. Characteristics of agencies that work with families are described, as well as the demographic characteristics and psychological problems of the clients most apt to be treated in family therapy. The study also looks at the role and structure of family therapy in the ecological system of the treatment institutions. A profile of the family therapists who are responsible for providing services to families is presented. An attempt was made to assess agencies' level of development with regard to family therapy by using an instrument, The Progress Index for Family Therapy Programs. Generally, findings indicated that there is considerable variation in expertise. More extensive training in family therapy techniques was of major concern, particularly among clinics with a heroin addict population.

This article is about how counselor licensure is moving ahead slowly, and those who wish to promote licensure bills in the states need specific and workable “guidelines” for successful efforts.     

Family Interaction as a Function of Experimental Task

To assess consistency family interaction across different experimental tasks, the present study evaluated family patterns of talking and interrupting, as elicited from discussions of a Plan Something Together Task, a set of TAT cards, and an Unrevealed Difference Questionnaire. With few exceptions, data analyses indicated that such family patterns are not altered significantly as a function of experimental tasks and, therefore, suggest considerable interactional stability across differing contexts. Characteristics of the present study (as well as related investigations of task effects) are discussed in terms of implications for future research efforts.
