ABSTRACT— Positive self-statements are widely believed to boost mood and self-esteem, yet their effectiveness has not been demonstrated. We examined the contrary prediction that positive self-statements can be ineffective or even harmful. A survey study confirmed that people often use positive self-statements and believe them to be effective. Two experiments showed that among participants with low self-esteem, those who repeated a positive self-statement ("I'm a lovable person") or who focused on how that statement was true felt worse than those who did not repeat the statement or who focused on how it was both true and not true. Among participants with high self-esteem, those who repeated the statement or focused on how it was true felt better than those who did not, but to a limited degree. Repeating positive self-statements may benefit certain people, but backfire for the very people who "need" them the most. 相似文献

Five experiments examined within-event learning in rats by inducing an appetite for one of the elements (salt) of a compound stimulus and assessing preference for the other element (almond). Almond preference was conditional upon (1) the almond flavour having been presented in compound with the salt, and (2) the assessment being conducted when the rats were out of sodium balance (Experiment 1). Presentations of the compound in one environment (A) and of the salt and almond elements in a second environment (B) resulted in greater almond preference when rats were tested in A than in B (Experiment 2). Almond preference was reduced when separate presentations of the compound and almond (Experiment 3) or of the compound and salt (Experiment 4) occurred in the same environments but not when these presentations occurred in different environments. Rats exposed to the compound in A and then extinguished to the elements in either A or B showed a reduced almond preference when tested in the extinction environment, but not when tested in the other environment (Experiment 5). Thus, extinction of within-event learning is context-specific and subject to renewal. The results were interpreted in terms of an associative model whereby separate presentations of the elements result in a symmetrical inhibitory link which is contextually gated (Bouton, 1993). 相似文献

The perceptions that Black men (N = 52) have of “parallel” dyads involving a Black male client and a White male counselor were examined in a vicarious participation analogue design. As defined by Helms (1984b), parallel dyad involves a client and counselor who share similar racial identity attitudes (i.e., attitudes about themselves relative to Blacks and Whites as reference groups). Multiple regression analyses were used to investigate whether racial identity attitudes predicted participants' reactions to the session and their perceptions of the counselors' cross-cultural competence and credibility. The results of the study indicated that racial identity attitudes significantly predicted participants' immediate reactions to the counselor. The influence of matrilineal kinship on four socially affiliative behavior patterns--grooming, contact, proximity, and play--was studied in a little-known primate species, the Celebes black ape (Macaca nigra). Twenty group-living black apes, comprising four genealogical groups, were observed for more than 100 hr; data were collected by the instantaneous scan technique. Animals spent more time than was expected by chance grooming, in contact with, and in proximity to their matrilineal relatives, but they did not play with relatives more than was expected. The proximal mechanisms responsible for these results are unknown, and increased familiarity among matrilineal relatives may have influenced the interaction patterns in the group. The results obtained in this study are similar to those of many others that demonstrate differential behavior toward kin, and they are consistent with the theory that animals may increase their inclusive fitness by interacting preferentially with relatives. 相似文献

School-wide, selective, and individual positive behavioral supports are critical elements of a comprehensive, tiered model
of service delivery. Positive peer reporting (PPR) involves brief, highly structured sessions during which peers are provided
the opportunity to praise the behavior of target students. PPR procedures were modified in this study to provide all children
in a classroom the opportunity to provide or receive peer praise. The effects of class-wide PPR on teacher-recorded critical
events were evaluated using a multiple baseline design across two classrooms. Results indicated marginal improvement across
the two settings, as well as supplemental measures of behavior outside of the classroom and class-wide sociometric nominations.

The superheating behaviour of embedded particles induced by semicoherent interfaces has been observed in many circumstances. In this paper, a phenomeno‐ logical model for melt nucleation on misfit dislocations at a semicoherent interface is proposed. A kinetic limit for semicoherent-interface-induced superheating, which is in good agreement with the results of experiments and computer simulations, is derived from this model. Calculations and analyses based on the model reveal that melting prefers to initiate at the semicoherent interface and that superheating of embedded particles is possible for a melt nucleation contact angle less than 90°. Among the matrix-dependent parameters, the contact angle and the shear modulus of the matrix are found to be dominant in determining the superheating of embedded particles. 相似文献

Heavy nitrogen doping of TiO2 thin films has been achieved by ion-beam-assisted deposition. The heavily doped films have a distorted anatase crystal structure and show an increase in visible-light absorption compared to films with only light nitrogen doping. The enhanced absorption is shown by a first-principles density-functional calculation to result from an electronic band-gap narrowing, in contrast to the appearance of isolated N 2p states above the valence-band maximum that occur with light nitrogen doping. 相似文献

We examined the relationship between stress hormone (cortisol) release and acquisition and consolidation of conditioned fear learning in healthy adults. Participants underwent acquisition of differential fear conditioning, and consolidation was assessed in a 24-h delayed extinction test. The acquisition phase was immediately followed by an 11-min psychosocial stress period (arithmetic test combined with a public speech). Salivary cortisol was sampled at various time points before and after acquisition and retention of fear conditioning. Results showed two effects of endogenous cortisol. Post-acquisition cortisol correlated with fear acquisition in male but not female participants. In addition, post-acquisition cortisol correlated with consolidation of fear but only in those participants with high cortisol levels. We conclude that in the short term, a robust and sexually dimorphic relationship exists between fear learning and stress hormone levels. For those participants whose fear learning is accompanied by high stress hormone levels, a long-term relationship exists between cortisol release and memory consolidation. These short-term and long-term effects may relate to the differential involvement of mineralocorticoid and glucocorticoid receptor subtypes, respectively. The findings have implications for understanding the role of stress, sex, and hormones in different stages of fear learning and memory. 相似文献

Three experiments were performed to explore the effects of mismatches between actions (key-presses) and the contents of auditory feedback (pitch events) during music performance. Pianists performed melodies from memory during altered auditory feedback that was synchronized with key-presses but matched the pitch of other sequence events. Feedback direction was manipulated by presenting pitches that matched events intended for the past (delays; Experiments 1 and 3) or the future (prelays; Experiments 2 and 3). Feedback distance was manipulated by varying the absolute separation between the current event and the location of the feedback pitch. All alterations disrupted the accuracy of performance (pitch errors) more so than timing. Serial-ordering errors indicated confusions among proximal and metrically similar events, consistent with the predictions of an incremental planning model (Palmer & Pfordresher, 2003). Patterns of serial-ordering errors suggested that performers compensate for the disruptive effects of altered feedback by changing event activations during planning. 相似文献
