Human observers demonstrate impressive visual sensitivity to human movement. What defines this sensitivity? If motor experience influences the visual analysis of action, then observers should be most sensitive to their own movements. If view-dependent visual experience determines visual sensitivity to human movement, then observers should be most sensitive to the movements of their friends. To test these predictions, participants viewed sagittal displays of point-light depictions of themselves, their friends, and strangers performing various actions. In actor identification and discrimination tasks, sensitivity to one's own motion was highest. Visual sensitivity to friends', but not strangers', actions was above chance. Performance was action dependent. Control studies yielded chance performance with inverted and static displays, suggesting that form and low-motion cues did not define performance. These results suggest that both motor and visual experience define visual sensitivity to human action.  相似文献

To what extent are newborn brains designed to operate over natural visual input? To address this question, we used a high-throughput controlled-rearing method to examine whether newborn chicks (Gallus gallus) show enhanced learning of natural visual sequences at the onset of vision. We took the same set of images and grouped them into either natural sequences (i.e., sequences showing different viewpoints of the same real-world object) or unnatural sequences (i.e., sequences showing different images of different real-world objects). When raised in virtual worlds containing natural sequences, newborn chicks developed the ability to recognize familiar images of objects. Conversely, when raised in virtual worlds containing unnatural sequences, newborn chicks’ object recognition abilities were severely impaired. In fact, the majority of the chicks raised with the unnatural sequences failed to recognize familiar images of objects despite acquiring over 100 h of visual experience with those images. Thus, newborn chicks show enhanced learning of natural visual sequences at the onset of vision. These results indicate that newborn brains are designed to operate over natural visual input.  相似文献

ABSTRACT

We examined if language proficiency modulates performance in tasks that measure executive control in older Telugu-English bilinguals (n = 50, mean age = 57.15 years). We administered numerical Stroop task, Attention Network Task, Dimensional Change Card Sorting task, and stop-signal task that are known to tap into different aspects of executive functioning on healthy aging Telugu-English bilinguals. Second language (English) proficiency was calculated as a cumulative score that considered both subjective and objective measures of L2 fluency and use. Bilinguals were divided into two groups based on the cumulative score and compared on each task. We did not find any effect of language proficiency on any of the executive control measures. The additional Bayesian analysis also supported these findings. Therefore, the results do not support the claim that bilingual language proficiency modulates executive control, at least in the elderly population. We discuss the results with regard to the issue of bilingual advantage in executive control and the role of age and language use.  相似文献

Here we report that a specific form of yoga can generate controlled high-frequency gamma waves. For the first time, paroxysmal gamma waves (PGW) were observed in eight subjects practicing a yoga technique of breathing control called Bhramari Pranayama (BhPr). To obtain new insights into the nature of the EEG during BhPr, we analyzed EEG signals using time-frequency representations (TFR), independent component analysis (ICA), and EEG tomography (LORETA). We found that the PGW consists of high-frequency biphasic ripples. This unusual activity is discussed in relation to previous reports on yoga and meditation. It is concluded this EEG activity is most probably non-epileptic, and that applying the same methodology to other meditation recordings might yield an improved understanding of the neurocorrelates of meditation.  相似文献

Owing to the presence of large fraction of grain boundaries, deformation-induced grain growth is commonly observed in fine-grained electrodeposited metals. Here we demonstrate that microcrystalline copper (d~1–10?µm) with different textures produced by electrodeposition exhibit significant deformation-induced grain growth in tension by coalescence along with twin boundary migration and detwinning. Oriented growth with the formation of a cube texture was noted in the deformed samples. There was an increased fraction of twin boundaries with large angular deviation from Brandon's criterion during deformation.  相似文献

Attentional disturbance is a common complaint after TBI in children and adolescents, however, few studies have assessed post-traumatic attentional functions. The attentional constructs proposed by Mirsky, Anthony, Duncan, Ahearn, and Kellam (1991) provided a multidimensional framework for prospective assessment of late attentional disturbance after mild-moderate (n = 34) and severe (n = 57) traumatic brain injury (TBI). Attention was evaluated from 5 to 8 years after TBI in children ages 0 to 15 years at the time of injury. Children with severe TBI performed more poorly than children with mild-moderate TBI on tests comprising the focus/execute and shift constructs. Younger children scored below older children irrespective of injury severity on the Digit Span subtest and interstimulus interval scores from an adaptive rate continuous performance test reflecting the encode and sustain constructs of Mirsky et al. (1991). Age × Severity interaction effects were found for speeded perceptual-motor tests; scores were reduced following mild-moderate and severe TBI in younger children and following severe TBI in older patients. Results are discussed in terms of the vulnerability of skills in a rapid stage of development to disruption by acquired brain injury.  相似文献
