The virtual cutting edge: the internet and adolescent self-injury

The 2 studies reported here use observational data from message boards to investigate how adolescents solicit and share information related to self-injurious behavior. Study 1 examines the prevalence and nature of these message boards, their users, and most commonly discussed topics. Study 2 was intended to explore the correlations between content areas raised for discussion. Both studies were intended to shed light on the role of message boards in spreading information about self-injurious practices and influencing help-seeking behavior. More than 400 self-injury message boards were identified. Most are populated by females who describe themselves as between 12 and 20 years of age. Findings show that online interactions clearly provide essential social support for otherwise isolated adolescents, but they may also normalize and encourage self-injurious behavior and add potentially lethal behaviors to the repertoire of established adolescent self-injurers and those exploring identity options.

The author argues in this paper that the ‘state effects’ generated by religious movements – even those operating at the margins of societies – require us to consider anew the impact of religious movements on state formation. In Sri Lanka, for instance, evangelicals are a minority. Yet their practice of proselytizing to new audiences was considered ‘unethical,’ generating opposition that was directed not only at them, but also at ruling elites for failing to stem what was seen as an intrusion of incompatible ‘Western’ ideals. Instead of considering how such Christian movements seek to ‘take over’ the functions of the ‘state’ as has been the experience in the United States and parts of Latin America, the author illustrates in this article why it makes more theoretical sense to ask how their activities impinge upon the conceptual frameworks through which the ‘state’ is imagined.     

Resignation or Courage: The Wisdom to See the Difference

A diagram may help clients whose dominant perceptual mode is visual. An example, based on the concepts of Adler, outlines the use of a chart in helping a client gain insight into different situations requiring resignation or action.     

Epistemic Value and the New Evil Demon

In this article I argue that the value of epistemic justification cannot be adequately explained as being instrumental to truth. I intend to show that false belief, which is no means to truth, can nevertheless still be of epistemic value. This in turn will make a good prima facie case that justification is valuable for its own sake. If this is right, we will have also found reason to think that truth value monism is false: assuming that true belief does have value, there is more of final epistemic value than mere true belief.     

Clock-delivered reinforcers in conjunctive and interlocking schedules

The effects of different temporal requirements in conjunctive and interlocking schedules of reinforcement were examined. The compound schedules were arranged so that a reinforcer could be delivered by either a rat's response or a clock. As the temporal requirements increased in the interlocking schedules, the overall rate of responding increased, but the pattern of responding remained relatively unchanged. As the temporal requirement increased in the conjunctive schedules, the overall rate decreased and a pause-and-run pattern of responding emerged. When the response requirement was reduced to one in the conjunctive schedule for one animal, a low and extremely stable rate of responding developed.
