The goal of the present experiment was to determine if object size rescaling in the shape-matching task requires central resources. Two polygons were presented side by side as the second task in a psychological refractory period paradigm. The polygons could be the same as each other or mirror images of each other and the size ratio between the two polygons was varied. In the first task, subjects were required to make a speeded response to the pitch of a tone. The polygon task followed at varying SOAs and the subjects then made a speeded same/mirror image judgement on the polygons. The size ratio effect was additive with SOA indicating that size rescaling is capacity demanding and that it requires central attention.  相似文献

Providing participants with a preview of half the distractors in a visual search task facilitates performance. The present study examined the effects of secondary tasks on the preview benefit in search. Participants had to attend to a visual or an auditory stream of digits that began either (a) at the onset of the preview or (b) after the preview. Secondary tasks that onset with the preview disrupted the preview benefit irrespective of their modality. Only visual secondary tasks disrupted the benefit in the delayed condition. These selective interference effects suggest that the preview benefit can be fractionated into 2 components: an initialization component that involves modality-independent resources and a maintenance component that depends on visual resources. Results are discussed in relation to theoretical accounts of the preview benefit in search.  相似文献

Zusammenfassung. In den Jahren 1994 bis 1997 fand eine Reihe von Workshops zum Thema "Collaborative Learning" unter Beteiligung von Psychologen, Erziehungswissenschaftlern und Informatikern statt. In diesen Begegnungen zeigten sich einige Unterschiede im Verständnis des Begriffes "Collaborative Learning" zwischen Psychologie und Verteilter Künstlicher Intelligenz. Der wesentliche Unterschied betrifft die Mechanismen mittels derer kooperierende Agenten Mißverständnisse erkennen und ausräumen, um somit zu einem gemeinsamen Verständnis der Aufgabe und ihrer Lösung zu gelangen. Diese Mechanismen könnten ein vorrangiger Forschungsgegenstand werden, wenn es darum geht, die Unterschiede zwischen den Disziplinen zu überbrücken. Summary. During the years 1994 to 1997, 20 European scholars from psychology, educational science and computer science participated in a series of workshops on collaborative learning. This experience revealed various differences in the way collaborative learning is understood in psychology and in distributed artificial intelligence. The main difference concerns the mechanisms by which agents detect and repair misunderstandings in order to progressively build a shared understanding of the task at hand and its solution. These mechanisms could become a priority item on the research agenda that bridges the disciplines.  相似文献

The tolerance to spatial disparity between two synchronous visual and auditory components of a bimodal stimulus has been investigated in order to assess their respective contributions to perceptual fusion. The visual and auditory systems each have specific information-processing mechanisms, and provide different cues for scene perception, with the respective dominance of space for vision and of time for hearing. A broadband noise burst and a spot of light, 500 ms in duration, have been simultaneously presented to participants who had to judge whether these cues referred to a single spatial event. We examined the influence of (i) the range and the direction of spatial disparity between the visual and auditory components of a stimulation and (ii) the eccentricity of the bimodal stimulus in the observer's perceptual field. Size and shape properties of visual-auditory fusion areas have been determined in two dimensions. The greater the eccentricity within the perceptual field, the greater the dimension of these areas; however, this increase in size also depends on whether the direction of the disparity is vertical or horizontal. Furthermore, the relative location of visual and auditory signals significantly modifies the perception of unity in the vertical plane. The shape of the fusion areas, their variation in the field, and the perceptual result associated with the relative location of the visual and auditory components of the stimulus, concur towards a strong contribution of audition to visual-auditory fusion. The spatial ambiguity of the localisation capabilities of the auditory system may play a more essential role than accurate visual resolution in determining fusion.  相似文献

When there are order constraints among the parameters of a binary, multinomial processing tree (MPT) model, methods have been developed for reparameterizing the constrained MPT into an equivalent unconstrained MPT. This note provides a theorem that is useful in computing bounds on the estimator variances for the parameters of the constrained model in terms of estimator variances of the parameters of the unconstrained model. In particular, we show that if X and Y are random variables taking values in [0,1], then Var[XY]?2(Var[X]+Var[Y]).  相似文献

Targets are identified more accurately when they are presented during an incongruent response (e.g., a left-pointing arrowhead presented during a right key press) than during a congruent response (e.g., a left-pointing arrowhead presented during a left key press). This effect, referred to here as congruency-induced blindness, has been hypothesised to result from the occupation of feature codes. According to the code occupation hypothesis (Behav. Brain Sci.; J. Experim. Psychol.: Human Percept. Perform.; Vis. Cogn., in press), only costs of congruency between features of a planned or executed action and a to-be-perceived target should be observed; neither costs nor benefits of incongruency are predicted by this account. In the present study, we investigated costs and benefits in identifying left and right targets directly by manipulating neutral response type and the symbols used to cue the neutral response, which produced four neutral conditions. Three important results emerged: (1). a significant main effect of RSI (suggesting that increasing temporal overlap between a planned action and target presentation interferes with perceptual reports of the target), (2). a significant main effect of congruency (showing that impairment is code-specific), and (3). clear-cut costs with little evidence for benefits. Other complex patterns of results provided additional information relevant for extant theories of perception-action interactions.  相似文献

The relation between emotion intensity and the voluntary activation of personal memories was investigated in 2 experiments. Two hypotheses were compared: the specificity hypothesis, which states that emotion intensity is positively related to the specificity of personal memories, and the strategic inhibition hypothesis, which postulates that specifying past experiences requires the inhibition of emotion. Study 1 showed that priming a specific (vs. overgeneral) access mode to autobiographical memory results in less emotion during a subsequent mental imagery trial. Study 2 replicated Study 1 with a wider array of emotions and a different method of emotion induction (films). Overall, results support the strategic inhibition hypothesis. The notion of specificity is discussed as well as implications for cognitive theories of emotion and their clinical applications.  相似文献

Selective attention to angry faces in clinical social phobia   总被引:11,自引:0,他引:11  
This study investigated the time course of attentional responses to emotional facial expressions in a clinical sample with social phobia. With a visual probe task, photographs of angry, happy, and neutral faces were presented at 2 exposure durations: 500 and 1250 ms. At 500 ms, the social phobia group showed enhanced vigilance for angry faces, relative to happy and neutral faces, in comparison with normal controls. In the 1250-ms condition, there were no significant attentional biases in the social phobia group. Results are consistent with a bias in initial orienting to threat cues in social anxiety. Findings are discussed in relation to recent cognitive models of anxiety disorders.  相似文献

In this paper, the problem of purifying an assumption-based theory KB, i.e., identifying the right extension of KB using knowledge-gathering actions (tests), is addressed. Assumptions are just normal defaults without prerequisite. Each assumption represents all the information conveyed by an agent, and every agent is associated with a (possibly empty) set of tests. Through the execution of tests, the epistemic status of assumptions can change from "plausible" to "certainly true", "certainly false" or "irrelevant", and the KB must be revised so as to incorporate such a change. Because removing all the extensions of an assumption-based theory except one enables both identifying a larger set of plausible pieces of information and renders inference computationally easier, we are specifically interested in finding out sets of tests allowing to purify a KB (whatever their outcomes). We address this problem especially from the point of view of computational complexity.  相似文献
