Reaction time and intelligence in the mentally retarted

Mildly retarted young adults were given simple and choice reaction time (RT) tests. Scores were also obtained on the Raven Progressive Matrices and the Figure Copying Test. Subjects' RTs increased as a function of stimulus complexity, and they were consistently subjects' intraindividual variability of response time was also markedly greater than that of non-retarded subjects. A number of RT parameters were found to be related to the measures of intelligence. Subjects seen on ten successive days showed low day-to-day stability of RT but no practice or fatigue effect.     

Relevant identity

We begin to fill a lacuna in the relevance logic enterprise by providing a foundational analysis of identity in relevance logic. We consider rival interpretations of identity in this context, settling on the relevant indiscernibility interpretation, an interpretation related to Dunn's relevant predication project. We propose a general test for the stability of an axiomatisation of identity, relative to this interpretation, and we put various axiomatisations to this test. We fill our discussion out with both formal and philosophical remarks on identity in relevance logic.     

Going As Far As We Can Go: The Jesus Proposal For Stretching Genes and Cultures

The Christian perspective on morality is examined under the rubric of "being like Jesus" and the "Jesus proposal for morality." The Peace People of Northern Ireland are examples of this proposal. Among the features of Christian moral thinking that are emphasized are: Jesus' concern for the future, the transformation that the future requires, human nature interpreted in terms of how it can undergo transformation, and self-giving love as the core of this transformation. Attention is given to the ways in which Jesus both radicalized and relativized the moral conventions of his day. Dialogue with sociobology comes into play when Jesus is viewed as a proposal for cultural evolution and a kind of biocultural mutation. Gerd Theissen's scholarship on Jesus' moral perspectives is given special attention.     

Language and Literacy in a Developmental Perspective

Snow et al. have provided an unusually comprehensive, even-handed, and thoughtful review of research on early reading development. Here we expand on an important theme—the value of a developmental and transactional perspective. Using results from studies of verbally precocious children and children with language impairments, we illustrate the qualitatively changing nature of the task of learning to read, and its connection to oral language development. We also discuss the bidirectional influence of adults and children on each other. This perspective has implications for what, when, and how to teach reading.     

Strengths-Based Assessment of Children with SED: Consistency of Reporting by Teachers and Parents

Parents and teachers rated the strengths of a group of 20 children diagnosed as having serious emotional disturbance. The degree of consistency between different informants' reports was examined to determine whether certain items and scales on the Behavioral and Emotional Rating Scale (BERS) were more appropriately answered by different sources or in different situations, and whether there were method effects associated with each group. A repeated measures ANOVA and correlations between the informants on each subscale demonstrated significant convergent and discriminant validity as well as possible assessment biases. Results also supported the need for developing separate norms for different informants.     

Law and regulation of preemployment inquiries

State and federal regulation of impermissible preemployment inquiries has become increasingly pervasive. Twenty-two states publish specific-question lists on many topics. They include questions asked in interviews, and items in advertisements, application forms, bio-data forms, and psychological and attitude inventories. The regulations, laws, court and agency decisions, and relevant literature are reviewed, and the impact of such regulations is discussed.     

Analysis of public verbal feedback as a staff management procedure

We evaluated public verbal feedback as a potentially effective and efficient means of improving institutional staff performance. Following baseline observations of the self-help training conducted by three groups of direct care staff with clients who had profound mental retardation, verbal feedback was presented publicly to individual staff during routine staff meetings. The feedback addressed the (in)frequency of the staffs training endeavors and required only a few minutes to present. Results indicated that each group of staff increased their client training when the public verbal feedback was provided. Probes of client self-help skills indicated that as the frequency of staff-conducted training increased, client skill acquisition improved. Generalization measures indicated that staff increased only those work behaviors for which they received feedback. Results are discussed regarding the efficiency of public verbal feedback as a means of improving staff performance, as well as the need for research to continue expanding and refining a technology of staff management.     

An algebraic treatment of the barwise compactness theory

A theorem on the extendability of certain subsets of a Boolean algebra to ultrafilters which preserve countably many infinite meets (generalizing Rasiowa-Sikorski) is used to pinpoint the mechanism of the Barwise proof in a way which bypasses the set theoretical elaborations.During the preparation of this work the second author was a postdoctoral visitor at the C.
