Abstract. The category of emergence has come to be of considerable importance to the science‐and‐religion dialogue. It has become clear that the term is used in different ways by different authors, with important implications. In this article I examine the criteria used to state that something is emergent and the different interpretations of those criteria. In particular, I argue similarly to Philip Clayton that there are three broad ranges of interpretation of emergence: reductive, nonreductive, and radical. Although all three criteria have their place, I suggest that the category of radical emergence is important both for science and theology. 相似文献

Owen Flanagan's The Really Hard Problem provides a rich source of reflection on the question of meaning and ethics within the context of philosophical naturalism. I affirm the title's claim that the quest to find meaning in a purely physical universe is indeed a hard problem by addressing three issues: Flanagan's claim that there can be a scientific/empirical theory of ethics (eudaimonics), that ethics requires moral glue, and whether, in the end, Flanagan solves the hard problem. I suggest that he does not, although he provides much that is of importance and useful for further reflection along the way. 相似文献

The potential for faking on noncognitive measures in high stakes testing situations remains a concern for many selection researchers and practitioners. However, the majority of previous research examining the practical effects of faking on noncognitive assessments has focused on these measures in isolation, rather than the more common situation in which they are used in combination with other predictors. The present simulation examined the effects of faking on a conscientiousness measure on criterion‐related validity, mean performance of those selected, and selection decision consistency when hiring decisions were based on this measure alone vs in combination with two other predictors across a range of likely selection scenarios. Overall, results indicated that including additional predictors substantially reduced – but did not eliminate – the negative effects of faking. Faking effects varied across outcomes and selection scenarios, with effects ranging from trivial to noteworthy even for multiple‐predictor selection. Successful integration of individuals in macaque societies suggests that monkeys use fast and efficient perceptual mechanisms
to discriminate between conspecifics. Humans and great apes use primarily holistic and configural, but also feature-based,
processing for face recognition. The relative contribution of these processes to face recognition in monkeys is not known.
We measured face recognition in three monkeys performing a visual paired comparison task. Monkey and humans faces were (1)
axially rotated, (2) inverted, (3) high-pass filtered, and (4) low-pass filtered to isolate different face processing strategies.
The amount of time spent looking at the eyes, mouth, and other facial features was compared across monkey and human faces
for each type of stimulus manipulation. For all monkeys, face recognition, expressed as novelty preference, was intact for
monkey faces that were axially rotated or spatially filtered and was supported in general by preferential looking at the eyes,
but was impaired for inverted faces in two of the three monkeys. Axially rotated, upright human faces with a full range of
spatial frequencies were also recognized, however, the distribution of time spent exploring each facial feature was significantly
different compared to monkey faces. No novelty preference, and hence no inferred recognition, was observed for inverted or
low-pass filtered human faces. High-pass filtered human faces were recognized, however, the looking pattern on facial features
deviated from the pattern observed for monkey faces. Taken together these results indicate large differences in recognition
success and in perceptual strategies used by monkeys to recognize humans versus conspecifics. Monkeys use both second-order
configural and feature-based processing to recognize the faces of conspecifics, but they use primarily feature-based strategies

In the present study, the influence of personality information on attractiveness ratings of different body sizes was examined. Specifically, participants were presented with either no personality information, negative information, or positive information about a hypothetical female target and asked to rate the smallest and largest figure that they would consider attractive for her using a figure rating scale. Consistent with the study hypotheses: (1) participants chose a wider range of figures as attractive for a female described to have a positive personality when compared to the range chosen when no personality information was provided; (2) females selected wider attractive ranges than males; and (3) other participant characteristics (i.e., physical appearance anxiety and body mass) were found to predict attractive ranges selected by participants. These findings may have implications for the treatment of body-image disturbance, as the findings suggest that personality, rather than appearance alone, may be a factor in perceptions of attractiveness of various body sizes. 相似文献

The American press began to take notice of the Danish cartoons after they began to circulate outside of Europe. The press
primarily framed the events as a single problem of global interaction: an issue of ‘freedom of speech’ opposed to ‘religious
sensitivity.’ Much of the coverage permitted, within limits, a plurality of voices. Drawing on a case study of stories about
the ‘cartoon controversy’ in the Boston Globe, I argue that U.S. journalism is organized by a logic of objectivity that seeks to produce a ‘perspectiveless perspective
on all perspectives’ (Bourdieu, On television. New York: The New Press, 1998), showing voices on ‘both sides,’ simultaneously masked and contributed to the press’s reifying a series of events into a
single global ‘event,’ one that reflected a clash of Western and Islamic values.
