Stuttering and anxiety: The difference between stutterers and nonstutterers in verbal apprehension and physiologic arousal during the anticipation of speech and non-speech tasks

To test if stressful anticipation of speech situations is a factor in eliciting stuttering behavior, the difference between 24 stutterers and 24 nonstutterers in verbal apprehension and physiologic activity was studied before and during speech tasks (reading and conversation), and nonspeech tasks (motor and intelligence task).Results indicate that the difference between stutterers and nonstutterers mainly were restricted to anxiety ratings assessed after each task. Heart rate, vasomotor responses, and electrodermal activity recorded before and during speech tasks were higher compared with the physiologic activity before and during nonspeech tasks but, unexpectedly, this was also the case for nonstutterers. It is concluded that stuttering is not elicited by anxiety.     

Factors in the modification by isolation of electroconvulsive shock-produced retrograde amnesia in the rat.

It has been demonstrated that placing rats in a sensory-restricted environment during the electronconvulsive shock- (ECS) retention interval following 1-trial appetitive learning will prevent or eliminate ECS-produced retrograde amnesia. The first study replicated this finding with a 1-trial aversive learning task, indicating that this effect is not task specific. The second study attempted to determine whether illumination or the restricted environment was the crucial factor in this penomenon. Rats placed in the light during the ECS-retention interval, whether restricted or in the colony, demonstrated retrograde amnesia after ECS. However, rats left in the dark during this interval demonstrated little, if any, retention deficit particularly if this condition was combined with sensory isolation. These studies further indicate that manipulation of the general environment of the animal after ECS can alter ECS-produced retention losses.     

Predictive Indices of the GATB

The study reported here investigated the use of the General Aptitude Test Battery for identification and counseling of students in vocational and academic clases in Ohio secondary schools. Frequency distributions of the GATB aptitude scores were developed for 4,000 ninth- and tenth-grade boys and girls. A multiple regression analysis was performed using the aptitude scores of the GATB as the independent variables, and point hour ratio and single subject grades at the end of one year as the dependent variables. Freshmen and sophomore grade-point average separately and in combination were the criteria used to determine the predictive ability of the aptitudes of the GATB. The GATB was useful in the predictive role for ninth- and tenth-grade achievement in most of the areas studied.     

Phonological encoding and ideographic reading by the disconnected right hemisphere: Two case studies

The mute disconnected right hemispheres (RHs) of two commissurotomy patients are able to understand spoken words and read printed words by matching them with pictures of the objects named. In this paper we report the results of five experiments. The RH of one patient could “evoke the sound image” of a word to the extent of matching two pictures with homonymous names (experiment 1) or with rhyming names (experiment 2) without being able to name either one. This transformation of picture to covert sound does not depend on orthographic similarity of word ends as a clue to homonymy or rhyme, nor does it improve with short-term learning. Yet neither RH can translate print into sound by matching a spelled word with a picture that has a rhyming name (experiment 3) or by matching two orthographically dissimilar rhymes, be they meaningful (experiment 4) or nonsense words (experiment 5). We suggest that these RHs read “ideographically,” recognizing words directly as visual gestalts without intermediate phonetic recoding or grapheme-to-phoneme translation.     

Social science and social policy and the care of young children: Head start and after

The relative influence of social science research in the formulation of social policy is reviewed through historical case studies of Head Start and federally funded day care within the United States. It is concluded that economic, social, and political factors are the principal initiators of broad program efforts and that social science research is influential in specifying the problem and the “fine-tuning” solution alternatives. The subjectivity of social science research is addressed by analyzing both the nature of the research questions asked and the advocacy role played by social scientists.     

Suicide prevention in the genetic counseling context

Utilizing a case report, this paper explores psychosocial aspects of suicidal intent in a woman seeking prenatal diagnosis. Using knowledge and practice of appropriate assessment, referral, and intervention procedures, the therapy team of genetic counselor and psychotherapist facilitated successful identification and management of this potentially suicidal client. The main counseling goals for the genetic counselor are to assess the situation adequately, decrease the immediate danger, and, with supervision and/or consultation, stabilize the seriously suicidal person until that individual can be triaged to mental health or medical professionals for treatment. The prevalence of suicide issues in genetic counseling contexts is unknown and reports mentioning suicidal ideation unusual in the genetic counseling literature. Is this reported case a rarity among genetic counseling referrals? Systematically collected information on the prevalence and resolution of suicidal issues in genetic counseling contexts would be helpful for those setting curricula for genetic counseling training programs, standards for professional certification exams, and policy and procedures manuals for clinical units.
