Sex Discrimination in Insurance

ABSTRACT The public controversy over sex-based differentials in insurance pricing makes heavy use of terms like 'fairness' and 'discrimination'; in particular, both sides argue that their position is the one dictated by considerations of fairness. Appeal to a basic principle of distributive justice shows that these differentials are not fair. Nevertheless, there is a substantial ethical argument to be made for the industry's status quo , based on the liberty of the low-risk insurees. The paper considers an alternative reform proposal, with a qualitatively different freedom cost; seven factors are then identified as useful in evaluating the trade-off between the freedom and justice at stake in any questionable insurance classification variable. A brief concluding section attempts to generalise this analysis to provide a broad framework for the analysis of other discrimination issues.     

VIOLENT SPLITS OR HEALTHY DIVIDES? COPING WITH INJUSTICE THROUGH FAULTLINES

In 2 studies, we investigated how groups with strong divisions may, paradoxically, help members to cope with injustice. We tested our theoretical predictions using a survey methodology and data from 57 (Study 1) and 36 (Study 2) workgroups across different industries. Consistent with our hypotheses, we found that group faultlines weakened the positive relationship between perceived interpersonal injustice and psychological distress. Cooperative behaviors within subgroups mediated the interactive effect of faultlines and injustice with psychological distress.     

Career Experiences of Bachelor's Degree Recipients: Comparison of Psychology and Other Majors

A study was conducted to compare career experiences of psychology majors with persons majoring in other fields. Questionnaires were mailed to bachelor's degree recipients with majors in psychology, liberal arts, the sciences, and business. Psychology majors were employed in a wide variety of occupations and were generally in jobs that seemed appropriate for college graduates. In terms of salary, relationship between college major and work, and relevance of college major to job experiences, psychology majors were fairly similar to liberal arts majors. However, the work experiences of psychology majors were not as positive as the work experiences of business and science majors. Sex differences were observed in career experiences for all categories of college majors.
